We are going to college We are Possible

2014–2015 College Access and Success Impact Report About Alabama Possible’s College Access and Success Work Alabama Possible works to build educational equity by increasing the number of Alabama students who pursue and complete a college education, particularly among low-income students, first-generation college-going students, and students of color. We do this by:

Teaming individual students with near-peer mentors to complete milestones focused on the social, emotional, and financial aspects of college access and success through the Blueprints College Access Initiative;

Building a college-going culture by supporting all students with resources and relationships necessary to pursue and complete valuable postsecondary credentials;

Nurturing cross-sector partnerships with school systems, higher education institutions, and other like-minded community organizations to fill gaps rather than duplicate services.

“College” is the attainment of valuable postsecondary credentials beyond high school, including professional/ technical certificates and academic degrees.

From left to right: A cohort of Phil Campbell High School students after they discussed their college choices with Alabama Possible Program Coordinator Landon Taylor. \\ A Honors College student shared a meal in the cafeteria with a Hillcrest High School freshman during a campus visit. \\ A freshman described what college means to him as part of our college knowledge curriculum. What is the Blueprints College Access Initiative? Blueprints students are teamed with college student “near-peer” mentors who equip them to make structured decisions and navigate the college admissions process, including academic planning, college and career exploration, and financial aid planning.

Two Woodlawn High School Seniors Named Gates Millennium Scholars Trey Hawkins and Jarrell Jordan, both Blueprints students at Woodlawn High School, received prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarships, which are administered by the United Negro College Fund with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The scholarship provides high- achieving, low-income, minority students with the opportunity to complete an undergraduate degree in any major at any university. It also helps pay for the students to attend graduate school in STEM or education fields.

Cash for College boosts the number of students completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students and their families must complete the FAFSA to apply for the Pell Grant, federal loans, and other work-study programs at Alabama’s two- and four-year, academic and technical schools.

Why is the FAFSA important?

9 out of 10 students who complete their FAFSA attend college the following fall, according to the U.S. Department of Education

With more than 100 questions, the FAFSA is longer and more complicated than a typical tax return.

Many parents and students lack adequate knowledge to accurately estimate the costs of college.

Most Birmingham City Schools students who file their FAFSA qualify for up to $5,755 in Pell Grant funding to attend the college of their choice.
