This revenue is to be used for the purposes of restoration, conservation, recreation, water resource development, historical preservation and capital improvements to such land and water areas. This program is intended to accomplish environmental restoration, enhance public access and recreational enjoyment, promote long-term management goals, and facilitate water resource development. The requirements for developing The Florida Forever Water Management District Work Plan are contained in Section (s.) 373.199, Florida Statutes (F.S). The provision states that the water management districts are to create a five-year plan that identifies projects meeting specific criteria. In developing their project lists, each district is to integrate its surface water improvement and management plans, Save Our Rivers (SOR) land acquisition lists, stormwater management projects, proposed water resource development projects, proposed water body restoration projects, and other properties or activities that would assist in meeting the goals of Florida Forever. The initial plan was submitted on June 1, 2001 to the President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). -

Management Plan for the Yellow Rail 2013 PREFACE The federal, provincial, and territorial government signatories under the Accord for the Protection of Species at Risk (1996) agreed to establish complementary legislation and programs that provide for effective protection of species at risk throughout Canada. Under the Species at Risk Act (S.C. 2002, c.29) (SARA), the federal competent ministers are responsible for the preparation of management plans for listed Special Concern species and are required to report on progress within five years. The Minister of the Environment and the Minister responsible for the Parks Canada Agency are the competent ministers for the management of the Yellow Rail and have prepared this plan, as per section 65 of SARA. -
Biscayne Aquifer, Florida Groundwater Provides Nearly 50 Percent of the Nation’S Drinking Water
National Water Quality Program National Water-Quality Assessment Project Groundwater Quality in the Biscayne Aquifer, Florida Groundwater provides nearly 50 percent of the Nation’s drinking water. To help protect this vital resource, the U.S. Geological Survey - (USGS) National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project assesses groundwater quality in aquifers that are important sources of drinking water (Burow and Belitz, 2014). The Biscayne aquifer constitutes one of the important aquifers being evaluated. Background Overview of Water Quality The Biscayne aquifer underlies an area of about 4,000 square miles in southeastern Florida. About 4 million people live in this area, and the Biscayne aquifer is the primary source of drinking water with about 700 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) withdrawn for public supply in 2000 Inorganic Organic (Maupin and Barber, 2005; Arnold and others, 2020a). The study area for the Biscayne aquifer constituents constituents underlies much of Broward and Miami-Dade Counties in southeastern Florida and includes 3 the cities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Most of the area overlying the aquifer is developed 5 and consists of about 63 percent urban and 9 percent agricultural land use. The remaining area 17 (28 percent) is undeveloped (Homer and others, 2015). The Biscayne aquifer is an unconfined, surficial aquifer made up of shallow, highly 80 95 permeable limestone as well as some sandstone units (Miller, 1990). Because of the shallow depth of the units that make up this aquifer, the connection to surface water is an important aspect of the hydrogeology of the Biscayne aquifer (Miller, 1990). A system of canals and levees are used to manage the freshwater resources of southern Florida. -
Chapter 17: Archeological and Historic Resources
Chapter 17: Archeological and Historic Resources Everglades National Park was created primarily because of its unique flora and fauna. In the 1920s and 1930s there was some limited understanding that the park might contain significant prehistoric archeological resources, but the area had not been comprehensively surveyed. After establishment, the park’s first superintendent and the NPS regional archeologist were surprised at the number and potential importance of archeological sites. NPS investigations of the park’s archeological resources began in 1949. They continued off and on until a more comprehensive three-year survey was conducted by the NPS Southeast Archeological Center (SEAC) in the early 1980s. The park had few structures from the historic period in 1947, and none was considered of any historical significance. Although the NPS recognized the importance of the work of the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs in establishing and maintaining Royal Palm State Park, it saw no reason to preserve any physical reminders of that work. Archeological Investigations in Everglades National Park The archeological riches of the Ten Thousand Islands area were hinted at by Ber- nard Romans, a British engineer who surveyed the Florida coast in the 1770s. Romans noted: [W]e meet with innumerable small islands and several fresh streams: the land in general is drowned mangrove swamp. On the banks of these streams we meet with some hills of rich soil, and on every one of those the evident marks of their having formerly been cultivated by the savages.812 Little additional information on sites of aboriginal occupation was available until the late nineteenth century when South Florida became more accessible and better known to outsiders. -

Ivory-Billed Woodpecker Fact Sheet Common Name: Ivory-Billed Woodpecker Scientific Name: Campephilus principalis Wild Status: Critically Endangered - heavily believed to be extinct Habitat: Pine Forests, thick hardwood swamp areas Country: Southeastern United States, and a subspecies native to Cuba Shelter: Trees Life Span: Unknown - some speculate up to 20 years or more Size: Weighs about 1 pound on average, total length roughly 20 inches, with a typical 30 inch wingspan Details The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is a very rare bird, native to the Southeast of the United States. They are one of the largest woodpeckers in the world, and noticeable by their distinct black and white pattern and red plumage near their head. Primarily due to habitat loss, as well as hunting to a lesser extent, the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is classified as critically endangered. However, many associations and biologists believe the species to be functionally extinct, as true sightings and evidence of living specimens has not been published in over 10 years. The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is believed to mate for life like many birds, and both parents would work together to create a nest for the young. Much of the woodpecker's diet consists of larvae and insects, as well as seeds and fruit. Cool Facts • They are sexually dimorphic - only the males have the red plumage on their head. • Four distinct vocal calls were noted in literature, and two of these calls were recorded in the 1930s. • While many unconfirmed reports still come in, this species was assessed as extinct in 1994. However, this was later altered to critically endangered on the belief that the species might have relocated from their native habitat.
