The centre will provide you with informa- tion about the heathland, it houses a 1 2 shop with local products and books on nature, as well as a cosy coffee Beilencorner.     J.A. B A KKER Megalithic Research in the Netherlands The impressive megalithic tombs in the northeastern Netherlands are called ‘hunebedden’, meaning ‘Giants’ graves’. These enigmatic Neolithic structures date to around 3000 BC and were built by the Funnelbeaker, or TRB, people. The current interpretation of these monuments, however, is the result of over 400 years of megalithic research, the history of which is recorded in this book. The medieval idea that only giants could have put the huge boulders of which they were made into position was still defended in 1660. Others did not venture to MEG explain how hunebeds could have been constructed, but ascribed them to the most I ancient, normally sized inhabitants. 16th-century writings speculated that Tacitus was N THE NETHE referring to hunebeds when he wrote about the ‘Pillars of Hercules’ in Germania. A Titia Brongersma is the first person recorded to do excavations in a hunebed, in LITHIC RESE 1685. The human bones she excavated were from normally sized men and suggested that such men, not giants, had constructed the hunebeds. Other haphazard diggings followed, but much worse was the invention of stone covered dikes which required large amounts of stone. This launched a widespread collection of erratic boulders, which included the hunebeds. Boundary stones were stolen and several hunebeds R were seriously damaged or they vanished completely. Het PlanMER met passende beoordeling Wet natuurbescherming ligt eveneens ter inzage. Het bestemmingsplan voorziet in de actualisatie van het bestemmingsplan Lhee, Eemster en Geeuwen- brug dat in 1999 werd vastgesteld. Door middel van de passende beoordeling is aangetoond dat als gevolg van de vaststelling van het bestemmingsplan geen negatieve effecten op de instandhouding van Natura 2000-gebieden zijn te verwachten. In relatie hiermee is voor agrarische bedrijven een zoge- naamde ‘stikstofregeling’ opgenomen, op grond waarvan vast staat dat het bestemmingsplan deze bedrijven geen ontwikkelingsruimte biedt, die tot gevolg kan hebben dat de bestaande, overbelaste stikstofdepositie op een Natura 2000-gebied gaat toenemen. In het bestemmingsplan zijn geen nieuwe bouwlocaties opgenomen. In verband met inspraak- en vooroverlegreacties en ambtshalve zijn ten opzichte van het voorontwerpplan enkele wijzigingen aangebracht. De wijzigingen betreffen in hoofdzaak: de ‘stikstofregeling’; de planregeling voor gastransportleidingen en externe veiligheid; de bescherming van cultuurhistorische waarden; aanpassing bestemming van enkele particuliere percelen. Door Bertus Voortman Dit artikel is met toestemming van Bertus Voortman overgenomen uit het ‘Levend Ver- leden’ van de Historische Vereniging ‘De Smilde’ De Decauvillebaan langs de huidige Bosweg was een smalspoorbaantje, dat gebruikt werd voor de ontginning van de landbouwenclave Oude Wil- lem. Uit: Knapzakroute K8, Hoogersmilde, pag. 7, juli 2006. Het ontspanningslokaal, de schippersbeurs, te Hoogersmilde, waar het startpunt was van de Decauvil- lebaan. Links op de voorgrond staan twee platte lorry’s. Nu is er het restaurant Het Rietendak in ge- vestigd. In de serie Knapzakroutes, wandelen door onbekend Drenthe, Hoogers- milde (K8) staan op pagina 6, twee kaarten. Het stukje kaart komt van Kaart nr. 186 uit de Atlas van Historische Topografische Kaarten, Dren- the, uitgegeven in 2007, maar de betreffende kaart is van 1923. Op de bo- venste staat, iets ten zuiden van de Beilervaart, aan de andere kant van de Smilder of Drentsche Hoofdvaart, bij MP 17, de Decauville Baan aange- geven. Toen lag die 'Baan' er dus nog. De Decauville Baan liep van de Smil- dervaart tot in Friesland, langs GP 79 (Kaart 185, Elsloo). Zo'n 300 meter van de grens Drenthe-Friesland slaat de baan af naar links, loodrecht langs de grens, om tussen grenspaal 73 en 72 weer terug te keren op Drents grondgebieds. Het eindpunt lag bij de weg Diever-Wateren, bij MP 5. Dit 2 is nu de Oude Willemsweg. Eindpunt bij Diever? Ja, en nee; ja, want hier lag het eindpunt van de smalspoorbaan vanwaar de trein ook terug moest.

Mensen willen toch de natuur in want dat is toch ook wel de reden waarom de mensen naar Drenthe komen. Hoe wordt dit duidelijk gemaakt richting de mensen? - Dat de mensen het bos niet meer in mogen of kunnen is een misverstand. Er blijven wel gewoon paadjes bestaan in het midden en in de randzones blijven ook gewoon bordjes staan! Overal liggen nu routes, hiervan zullen een aantal verdwijnen.
