The age limit reduction plan would hit the trade hard but retro tting cabs would make it unnecessary RETROFITTING IS STEVE MCNAMARA THE WAY FORWARD TOP TRADE STORY

ast week, I submitted the LTDAs response to TfL’s consultation on its misguided L proposal to reduce the taxi age limit from 15 to 12 years. I know our members have been seriously concerned about the ramifications of this proposal for the trade since it was first announced last Christmas, so developing a workable alternative has been a top priority. TfL had failed to even do a cost impact assessment on the effect of the age limit drop on cab values, something we have calculated to be in the region of £50 million. This drop in residuals will affect everyone irrespective of whether you are mushing or renting, either the resale value of your cab drops or the fleets have to charge more money to get the return on their investments in less time. With City Hall and all the air quality groups increasingly documenting and publicising London’s air quality crisis, the option of trying to deny the trade’s contribution to rising pollution levels evaporated. We needed a workable solution that would give Mayor Sadiq Khan the air quality improvements he wants, without decimating our trade. retrofit system for both the TX4 and the Vito.
