rom October 23, 2015, to May 1, 2016, Union Station visitors will embark on a journey into the F brilliant mind of a true Renaissance genius. Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, more commonly known as Leonardo da Vinci, was an Italian polymath who lived more than 500 years ago. Mostly known for his paintings, da Vinci was much more than an artist. His areas of expertise also included sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, and anatomy, to name a few. Da Vinci’s breadth of knowledge and passion for innovation epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. His notebooks are full of drawings depicting inventions that came to life centuries after he envisioned them. Now, for the fi rst time in Kansas City, Da Vinci: The Exhibition, Presented by Chase, comes to Union Sta- tion! Developed by Aurea Exhibitions and produced by

Imagine Exhibitions, Inc., Da Vinci: The Exhibition is a hands-on examination of da Vinci’s life, research, invention and art. “It’s perfect for our core mission of STEAM education,” said George Guastello, president and CEO of Union Station. “Union Station Kansas City offers a beautiful and impressive space for this exhibition. It will tell the story of da Vinci in an unforgettable way,” said Tom Zaller, president and CEO of Imagine Exhibitions. Featuring more than 65 fully built, life-size in- ventions, more than 20 fi ne art studies and dozens of stunning displays, guests will learn the complex beginnings and lifetime achievements of da Vinci through his discoveries in art, engineering, fl ight, hydraulics, music, light and more. Guests will start their tour with a short video introducing them to da Vinci and the Renaissance, and set the stage for a journey through the mind of a genius. Throughout the exhibition’s eight themed galleries, visitors will discover the scope of da Vinci’s incredibly advanced understanding of science, mathemat- ics, nature, and the relationship among the three. The exhibition highlights the artist’s intricate designs and extraordinary early concepts, including his design for the helicopter, tank, SCUBA, crane, clock, submarine and his plan for a modern city. Additionally, various multimedia “This exhibit is so diverse. It is a great experiences and documentary presentations provide supplementary information on da Vinci’s discoveries and family experience,” said Tom Zaller. creative process. “The exhibition tells great stories and resonates well with art lovers and families. There is something for everyone. Parents can experience this with their chil- dren. And a child who might be interested in engineer- ing - for example - will see so much more that da Vinci accomplished, like his anatomic drawings, which could lead that same child to become interested in being a physician. This exhibit is so diverse. It is a great family experience,” said Zaller. This particular exhibit ties closely to Union Station’s Science Center, further expounding on the educational experience that visitors gain while at the Station. “There is a strong connection between the da Vinci exhibition and STEAM education,” said Christy Nitsche, Director of Programming at Kansas City’s Science Center - Science City.

A master inventor, da Vinci’s innovations are refl ected throughout Science City…including Spark!Lab, the Maker Studio, and the new water exhibit, Every Last Drop, to name just a few. “We are excited to show current applications of da Vinci’s inventions and his contributions to science, technology, engineering and math. Visit the exhibition, then come to the Science Cen- ter and see his inventions in action. Expand kids’ understanding in a unique hands-on setting,” said Nitsche. Each invention featured within the exhibi- tion was handcrafted utilizing a modern trans- lation of da Vinci’s unique mirrored writing style in an ancient Florentine dialect. Trained artisans used these translations to construct full-scale models and bring the master’s two- dimensional plans to life. “Da Vinci drew his inventions in a notebook; he didn’t build them. Experts brought them to life in a 3D format so visitors are able to see and appreciate da Vinci’s unimaginable foresight and genius,” said Zaller. In addition to da Vinci’s role as an inven- tor, the exhibition investigates a collection of da Vinci’s most renowned paintings, including some controversial works traditionally attributed to him, but not yet authenticated. Guests will have the opportunity to thoroughly study the artistic mastery behind such works as “Mona Lisa,” “The Last Supper,” “Portrait of a Young Man,” “Virgin

Da Vinci: The Exhibition’s in-depth and enlighten- ing explanations of his famous studies on subjects such as the golden ratio and “Vitruvian Man” are complemented by enlarged examples of the artist’s sketches and notes made during his controversial research on the human body. “This exhibition was designed to show the full breadth of da Vinci,” Zaller said. “His name is still so widely recognized today. How many people who lived 500 years ago are still a household name? After going through Da Vinci: The Exhibition, people will leave saying they had no idea he invented ALL of that!” DaVinci: The Exhibition is the perfect outing for all kinds of groups and highlights yet another way Union Station incorporates STEAM education in a fun, exciting way! ULTIMAKER MAKES THE ULTIMATE DONATION TO SCIENCE CITY!

Ultimaker, based in the Netherlands and one of the world’s leading manufacturers of 3D printers, recently gifted nine new 3D printers valued at more than $21,000, to the Maker Studio at Kansas City’s Science Center. This donation is Ultimaker’s largest gift to date! The printers have been added to the existing six Ultimaker2 models currently utilized in the Maker Studio, bringing the overall total to 15. The generous donation will allow better sup- port of STEM education during walk-up workshops and dem- os, school fi eld trips, professional development programs for teachers, special events such as Make48™ (the 48 hour invent-a- thon weekend) and more. “We are excited to bring our new 3D printers to the Maker Studio,” Iris Smeekes, Ultimaker representative, said. “3D printers are an excellent learning tool and now everyone who comes into the Maker Studio can experience this technology.” 3D printing technology is being used to create advancements in so many fi elds, one of which is prosthetics. Ultimaker has partnered with the E-Nable Foundation to use 3D printers to produce prosthetic limbs more quickly and effi ciently.

Generous donations and sponsorships ensure the Science Center thrives now, and for generations to come.

Tommes Heinemann, Marketing & Distribution Manager at Ultimaker, said, “The E-Nable Project is just one example of how prosthetics can be done in an affordable way by using 3D printers. There are over 5,000 volunteers who print the prosthet- ics and make them available for people who need them.” “Ultimaker focuses mainly on professional markets, so businesses use the product to create prototypes, but there’s also a close link between Science Centers and schools. We be- lieve that every school should have 3D printers because of the added value to the learning process and the multipurpose aspect of this technology. It’s very important that the tech- nology of 3D printing is available for children and that’s one of the many goals of Science City, so it was a perfect Photos courtesy of Roy Inman fi t for the Science Center’s vision and the vision of Ultimaker,” Heinemann said. 20 • Union Station On Track Fall 2015 Tommes Heinemann with Luis Rodriguez Thomas Butch and George Guastello with Katlyn Niehaus Business Membership Delivers Valuable Benefits
