BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 2 LIFE MEMBER INDUCTEE

Leigh Blennerhassett

The committee of Boronia Cricket Club nominates Leigh Blennerhassett for Life Membership.

Leigh Blennerhassett first joined the club in 2006 coming from Meerlieu Cricket Club.

Leigh’s senior playing career at Boronia includes: • Games: 113 • : 126 (Best figures 7/20) • Runs: 929 at 18.82 • 160th player to play 1st XI • Dual premiership players • But perhaps Leigh’s greatest contribution to the club comes through his work off the field.

Leigh’s off-field roles include: • General committee (2010-2012) • Secretary (2012 - current) • Treasurer (2018-2019) • Leigh’s ability to coordinate and complete all tasks and duties required to operate our club is admirable. He is the one keeping everything on track, prompting others when something needs to be actioned.

Leigh’s commitment to these roles goes far and beyond what is expected. He is always first to put his hand up when a task pops up often before being asked. Whether its stocking the bar, assisting in fundraising efforts, cleaning, and handover duties, running the bar during functions, organising equipment - the list goes on.

In 2012, 2013 & 2016 Leigh took home the Presidents Trophy, a club record, and in 2014 & 2018 he was awarded the Best Clubman Award. Leigh’s commitment and loyalty to the Boronia Cricket Club is unparalleled.

Leigh Blennerhassett becomes the 49th Life Member of the Boronia Cricket Club.

*Nomination passed during 2018-19 Annual General Meeting.

3 BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 LIFE MEMBER INDUCTEE

Matthew Smyth

The committee of Boronia Cricket Club nominates Matthew Smyth for Life Membership.

Matt joined the Boronia Cricket Club in 2001/02 as a junior player working his way up through the senior ranks, debuting in the 1st XI in 2006. He was the 141st player to represent Boronia in the 1st XI.

His no fuss attitude in all roles he takes on is a real support to the committee and the playing group.

Matt constantly puts in long hours and can be seen at the club at all hours doing many jobs for the club to run smoothly on a day to day basis.

His playing career at Boronia includes: • 190 games (88 games in 1st XI) • 2203 runs at 15.40 (Highest score 98) • 97 wickets at 24.63 (Best figures 4/22) • 113 catches (8th highest) • 1st XI Player No. 141 • 2nd XI Premiership player.

Matt has taken on many roles within the club over the years including: • President (2014-2019) • Junior Coordinator (2018-2020) • Social Coordinator • Committee Member for a number of years • The first player to be part of the Holmesdale/Boronia Exchange program in 2009.

Matt often fulfills many roles which go unseen by many of the club especially after hours with paperwork and correspondence for all club matters.

Matt always has his presidential duties and information ready for the club’s monthly committee meetings.

Matthew Smyth becomes the 50th Life Member of the Boronia Cricket Club.

*Nomination passed during 2018-19 Annual General Meeting.

BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 4 PRESIDENTS REPORT

It gives me great pleasure to present the President’s report for the 2019-20 season – my first report as President.

Looking back at the past season, I am extremely proud of what the club has achieved both on and off the field.

When Matt Smyth informed me that he was taking a well-deserved break and stepping down as President, it was with both trepidation and excitement that I nominated to take on the role. Excitement at getting to help shape the club moving forward, but also some nervousness about leading a club with a history of great leaders. I hope I’ve done the job justice in my first year, I’ve certainly learnt a lot and I’ve enjoyed the challenge.

Matt Smyth is certainly a hard act to follow. In my 20 years at the club, I’ve not seen anyone invest as much time and effort into helping run the place as I’ve seen Matt do over his 5 years as President. He has informed me that he wishes to step entirely back from the committee this year and I’m not sure anyone could begrudge him for wanting to have a spell after so many years. Personally, Matt has been an enormous source of guidance and knowledge, so to you Matt, both from myself and on behalf of the club, I say a big thank you.

As a committee I thought our team of Rod Kimmitt, Leigh Blennerhassett, Matt Smyth, Melanie Kogelman, Michael Kogelman, John Blennerhassett, Mark Harris and Stephen Bowen did an exceptional job in helping run the club. Hard and unpopular decisions had to be made along the way – the introduction of the helmet policy certainly comes to mind – but these are decisions that are made in the best interest of taking the club forward, which should be the goal of any good committee. To all of you, I thank you for the time and effort you all put in. Special mention goes to first time committee member and club Treasurer Mel Kogelman. It took us a few attempts to convince her to join up, and I’m certainly glad she did. With any luck we can convince her to look after the books for a few more seasons to come.

Socially it was great to see the club hold a number of successful functions this year, helping push the club into a stronger financial position. Even more encouraging was seeing the next generation of players really getting behind these functions. Cam Blease, Kyle Schmidtke, Ethan Ward, Cody Eccles, Harrison Jurs, Mitch Tucker, Matt Rose’Meyer and Zac Kalisperis bouncing around the rooms late into the night was particularly pleasing. We certainly hope to see these players, and the next gen behind them, enjoying the club for many, many years to come.

An early success was the signing of Chris McCartin as coach of the club. Having played both with Chris as a player, and under him as captain of our 1st Dunstan side, I knew what kind of person we were getting and he hasn’t let us down. Whilst I’m sure his older school methods certainly got the attention of some players early, the group as a whole really responded well, and the proof is in the results – Three teams in the finals with two teams finishing the season as the runner up in the Grand Final. While naturally a Grand Final win for one of the teams would have topped of the season, it was overall a massive improvement from previous years. I’d like to thank Chris for his efforts and look forward to seeing us take another big step forward this year.

5 BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 Another thanks goes out to our captains for this season. Chris McEwan, Scott Moody, John Blennerhassett and Pete Godwin did a fantastic job representing the club on match day. We had nothing but positive reports back from the associations about our on field conduct, and that comes from the top so thanks to you all.

Our junior program was headed up by Matt Smyth this year who did an incredible job with the assistance of Michael Kogelman. Matt will touch on this more in the junior report, but to all the junior parents, players, team managers and volunteers I say a big thank you.

Thursday nights were once again catered for by Ellen Johnson. Keeping so many members fed each week isn’t an easy job, but year in she comes up with the goods, so again a big thanks to Ellen. Neale Fogarty was an enormous help on a Saturday, making up the afternoon teas for the home team and cooking up food after the game. Seeing Grant Ward, Mary Rose’Meyer, Steve Schmidtke and Brett Tucker most Thursday nights certainly didn’t go unnoticed, thanks for all your support through the season. Again, I extend an invitation to all club members to join us on a Thursday night for a meal and a drink – you are all always welcome.

I would like to thank the following sponsors for their generosity and support of the Boronia Cricket Club during the 2019-20 season: Club Kilsyth, Online Homeloans, Oven Repair Man, Lipari’s, Accent Windows, Topline, Icon, Heidi Victoria, Allan Jones Windscreens, Barry Plant Boronia, Phil Moody and MyoNexus Therapeis.

As we approach this coming season, no doubt all members are a little unsure of how it will pan out. At this stage it looks likely that the season will get underway sometime in November, but as with everything at the moment that is very dependent on how things play out at a national level. It will certainly be a different looking season, but be assured the committee will be doing everything they can to get us on the park safely. I’ll do my best to keep you updates as any information comes through.

Paul Noone President

BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 6 TREASURERS REPORT

In my first year as BCC Treasurer, I have gained a greater insight into not only the workings of the Club’s finances but how many people it takes to ensure the success of the Club both on and off the field. It has been a pleasure to work alongside the current Committee and I’d like to particularly thank Leigh Blennerhassett for his help over the year to enable me to gain confidence in the role.

It is with much pleasure that I announce that the Club made a profit of $4,220.50 in 2019/20. This represents the largest profit that the Club has achieved over the past five years.

The addition of two Bunnings BBQ’s and a successful social calendar went a long way to achieving the result.

The iPod Shuffle night was a tremendous success especially thanks to Paul Noone and Matt Smyth for their efforts organising and running the night.

Trivia night was smaller than previous years but still offered a solid contribution and will continue to be a regular fixture on the BCC social calendar.

Match day playing fees were increased this year to cover higher and ball costs. This proved to be a sound decision in ensuring the Seniors reported a profit for the season. Similarly, it was the decision of the Committee to increase Bar prices slightly to contribute to the Bar producing a profit.

Sponsorship was a solid result. Rod Kimmitt ensured we retained our major sponsor, Club Kilsyth, and demonstrating again his productive negotiating skills. Rod also implemented the Social Supporter Packs enabling Members and affiliates to support the club financially while being offered drink packages and complimentary merchandise.

While COVID-19 is expected to delay the start of the 2020/21 season, the current finances of the Club should put us in position to ensure the Club gets through this difficult time.

Unfortunately, though, it is forecast that Sponsorship income will be reduced in the coming season with many businesses cutting back on such spending due to COVID-19.

It is hoped that Members will continue to support the Club into the new season by purchasing Supporter Packs and supporting the Club’s finances in uncertain personal and economic times.

I look forward to continuing my duties as Treasurer in the new season and reporting on the continued financial success of the Club.

9 BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 COACHES REPORT

Now that 2019 – 2020 is done, and we didn’t have much of an opportunity to reflect on the season, it’s fair to say that although we didn’t have the ultimate success it was a very good season; one that we can all be proud of.

Throughout the season there were some great individual performances and it was good to see terrific improvement in the younger players.

The 1st XI was well led by Chris McEwan with fantastic seasons from David Carman and Ronnie McKendry. Although they missed out on winning the Grand Final, I hope that the hunger is still there to get the success that they all deserve.

The 2nd XI led by Scott Moody had a great season and once again missed out on taking home the premiership. This in no way diminishes the importance of the team’s efforts to get them to finals. Well done guys.

The 3rd XI was led by John Blennerhassett. They had a different team every week and their end of season position did not reflect their season; there were a lot of gains with a lot of cricket played by a lot of players and we’ll see the benefit of that in the years to come.

Peter Godwin headed up the 4th XI and it was a fantastic effort to make the finals. The players all enjoyed Pete’s positive approach to the game and had some terrific results throughout the year.

Thanks to Paul and the committee for their support this season. I hope to see you all soon and am looking forward to 2020 – 2021.

BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 10 CAPTAINS REPORT - 1ST XI

ECA A Turf – Finished 1st

There were several great moments, highlights and performances from the 1st XI in 2019-20, but it will be a season that will mostly be remembered as bitter-sweet. We came close, yet so far from our ultimate goal of winning a premiership.

There were several factors, outside of our control, that impacted all cricketers in Melbourne throughout this unique season. It was certainly one of the wettest seasons in living memory, with most Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays seemingly impacted by rain. Further to this, there were impacts to training and T20 matches as a result of bushfire smoke in January and then of course, the pandemic became a rapidly evolving situation on the most critical weekend of the season – Grand Final Weekend. All these elements were out of our control, but I’m proud of how we adapted to these scenarios as a club and as a team. I can honestly say that the 1st XI never let any of these barriers effect our performance, in fact, more often than not, we thrived in these circumstances and usually came out on top.

Dave Carman had an outstanding season with bat and ball and proved how valuable long innings and partnerships are for the team. I know how much team success matters to Dave, but this season was certainly some individual recognition for the way he plays the game and his willingness to play any role for the team. Often with him up the other end was Ronnie McKendry who proved again to be the rock of our middle order. Very noticeable in Ronnie’s game over the past two seasons has been his ability to cash in when the team has momentum, but even more importantly, grab the moment when things are not on our terms to then put us in a winning position. I can recall off the top of my head 5 or 6 times where the opposition lost a in the first over of their innings at the hands of Josh Ingram, Steve Bowen or Aaron Suckling. This was particularly important in big matches in the last home and away game and semi- final, where early breakthroughs and aggressive asked real questions of opposition top orders and set the tone for the rest of the bowling effort.

Despite all of this, we must acknowledge the fact that we are ultimately judged by how we ended the season as a team. Cricket Grand Finals are either glorious or brutal. Unfortunately, for us it was the latter, despite our best efforts to stay in the contest and keep fighting until the end.

A special thank you to Chris McCartin and his efforts as club coach. It was great having Christo back to the club, driving standards and constantly teaching us the undeniable elements of the game – hard work, skill, discipline. Also, thanks to the committee for the opportunity to have captained the 1st XI throughout the season, and all the support from other club captains, namely Scott Moody, John Blennerhassett and Pete Godwin.

Chris McEwan 1st XI Captain

11 BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 CAPTAINS REPORT - 2ND XI

ECA C Turf – Finished 1st

2019/20 another season done and dusted.

Firstly, I would like to thank the club on giving me the opportunity to take over the 2nd XI captaincy this season. I would also like to thank everyone who had played in the side this season along with everyone else who offered support throughout the season.

After a good preseason we headed into the season and started well getting wins on the board early which is something we have not done in past seasons. wise we were able to get some good scores on the board. Matt Smyth, Jay Windross and the ever reliable Gary collier were key players all scoring runs pre new year's break, Bowling wise Tim Ribbands, Kyle Schmidtke and Gary were standouts. Heading into the break we were sitting in a good position looking forward to a big second half of the season.

As soon as we came back from the break, we faced some challenges with injuries and unavailability's but to the boys credit everyone stood up when needed and we continued to get wins on the board. Major keys to the was the solid opening partnership built between Chris McCartin and Ethan Ward, consistent contributions from Jake Blennerhassett and Alex McCann coming into the side offering slick glove work and some very handy lower order hitting. Finishing on top of the ladder was a real credit to everyone involved.

When finals time came around everyone was excited to see what we achieve. As it turned out the Semi went to plan, in this game we put in a really good effort bowling first taking our catches and knocking off the runs after a shaky start, Yohan Jayasinghe took 4 important wickets, Alex McCann turned the game when he came out to bat making it look easy, but the star of the game was Jakob Smith making 44no off 203 balls in what was the most valuable innings we had from anyone throughout the season.

Unfortunately, as we all know the Grand Final didn't go quite as planned being out played by a good outfit in Marcellin. Going forward I would really like to look back and focus on what we had achieved throughout the season and not where we fell short.

Lastly I would like to thank Chris McCartin on his work as coach this season and also the support given to me as we were able to play most of the season together and his experience was very valuable to the side.

Scott Moody 2nd XI Captain

BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 12 CAPTAINS REPORT - 3RD XI

MCA B Turf (SUNDAY) – Finished 9th

This season I again had the honour to be asked to continue in the role as 3rd X1 Captain.

We again played in the Mercantile Cricket Association and this season saw us drop down a grade to Sunday B grade which was much more to our standard.

We again we used many players (30) during the season which again tested our depth as a club. I would personally like to thank all the players who doubled up playing Saturdays and Sundays to help us field a team.

On paper to look at the season with only 5 wins was a little disappointing but we had chances to win another 5-6 games and we lost the points for the Ashwood win so our improvement was very evident and we again played a number of younger players in this team.

Hopefully, this experience of playing a good standard will help our younger players make the transition into the ECA Turf cricket a much easier one. It would be fair to say we played against teams who would have been very comfortable in C grade in the ECA.

To see the continued improvement during the season from our younger players was a real highlight. Highlights were Aaron Blanchfield 338 runs at an average of 26, Callum Thornton 32 wickets, Matt Rose Myer 205 runs and 11 wickets, Zac Kalisperis 17 Wickets.

We were delighted with the inclusion of younger players coming into the team and the development of Mitch Tucker, Matt Rose Myer and the inclusion of Alex McCartin was great to see and this experience on turf will greatly help our club into the future.

Congratulations must go to Callum Thornton on winning the Rod Kimmitt Medal. Chew had an outstanding season taking 32 wickets at 14.09 and also to Aaron Blanchfield who had an outstanding season with the bat off the back of no training due to work commitments.

I would also say thanks to the regular players who played most of the season with me and their support was greatly appreciated Leigh Blennerhassett, Chamil Peiris, Ruchith Arambepola.

This season we had the pleasure of Alex McCann from Holmesdale playing 13 games with us on a Sunday. We wish Alex all the best for his future back at Holmesdale and I’m sure we will see him again at Boronia one day.

A special mention to Chris McCartin as Club coach who did a marvellous job on his return to the club. Finally, a very special thanks to and all the committee members, players, coaches, members, parent’s and supporters who helped and contributed to the season and especially Neale Fogarty who helped out with the afternoon teas for home games.

John Blennerhassett 3rd XI Captain

13 BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 CAPTAINS REPORT – 4TH XI

RDCA E Grade – Finished 4th

The 2019/20 season threw up the usual challenges and a new one that did not just affect the BCC but Countries, communities, families, friends, and loved ones worldwide. The COVID 19 pandemic has proven to be devastating on so many fronts and my heart felt sadness and sorrow goes out to all those that have been directly affected by this tragedy. I send my best wishes to the BCC family and pray that our families remain safe and immune from the worst of this medical emergency.

What a season this proved to be again I could not be prouder of the efforts and comradery of everyone that put on the BCC baggy brown cap not just in the 4th eleven but across all the grades.

Special mention must be given to the outstanding efforts of the Executive/General committee, Match committee, Coach - Chris McCartin (thanks for taking us on the journey) and 1st XI captain – Chris McEwan.

This seasons story is very similar to previous seasons. We had many players assist us field a squad every week which made for some interesting match committee discussions. We played the game in the spirit that we expect and demand of those who play for the BCC with respect for the opposition being the key whilst still having fun. We played some very competitive cricket and were able to finish 4th at the end of the regular season and to complete the story of Déjà vu sadly we lost the Elimination final to Templeton.

We played in RDCA E grade again this season with the top 4 teams being represented by some very good adult and junior cricketers. All these teams were evenly matched with no standout evident.

This year 28 players pulled on the pads for the 4ths. There were times we struggled to get a full team on the park due to availabilities, some of those due to injuries. I suppose the later is to be expected with the aging demographic of several of the team members. Special mention must go to Mark Harris for one of the worst fracture dislocated ankles I have seen, it may have cost him the bowling averages even though he was selected as a batsman. It was great to have Chris take the field on a couple occasions throughout the season. In one game he played a very well- constructed 99 demonstrating the importance to all, of playing every ball on its merits, then it all fell apart with a predetermined push across the line, Oh well.

We had past and new players to the club and team this year which was sensational. These include Mal Bandyala, Navneet Solanki, Prashanth Radhakrishnan, Brett Tucker, Mitch Tucker, Steve Schmidtke, Zac Schmidtke, Liam Schmidtke, Andrew Arthurs and Michael Kogelman.

Of these players Steve Schmidtke returned to play cricket with his sons Liam and Zac. The father son story continued when Brett Tucker helped us field a side against Chirnside Park and played alongside Mitch. These are stories that make clubs great.

BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 14 It is my hope that as we move forward over the next couple of seasons that we can develop and transition more junior cricketers into senior cricket

Special mention to the following senior players who made my job easier due to their support throughout the season, John Fogarty, Ranjit Nair, Dan Kable, Rod Kimmitt, and Ron McKendry. They are not afraid to give their insight or tell me that it may be time for different strategy……. not that they would ever say I was wrong!?

Throughout the course of the season there were several team and individual highlights.

These include but are not limited to;

• Loyalty and unity displayed to each other • The never say die attitude of all concerned • The juniors and seniors that made their debut for the team this season • The development and improvement of Mitch, Zac and Matt, at training and in matches with the 4ths and in higher grades • The efforts of our opening bowlers Ranjit and Mitch with 19 and 20 wickets respectfully • Individual and team efforts with the bat, Chris McCartin 99, Jacob Carroll 50no, John Fogarty 54no in a final what an effort, Mal and Navs 31 run partnership improvement can be made with running between the wickets, Chris and my 132-run partnership • Individual efforts with the ball Mitch 6/13, Ranjit 5/31, Zac K 3/13, Zac S 2/16

I would like to take the time to thank all family members and partners of the players who assisted with set up and pack up, afternoon teas for which I can categorically state we again had the best in the comp. They include and are not limited to the following, Mary Rose-Meyer, Ron McKendry’s Mum, Brett Tucker, The Kalisperis family. Apologies if I have forgotten anyone.

Thank you to all the playing personnel for keeping team spirit and unity high as well as the efforts on the field, as none of this year’s success would have been possible without you.

In finishing my thanks to the BCC for giving me the opportunity to continue in this role. Hopefully the club will see individuals from this team continue to develop over the next couple of seasons and move up the ranks and have a higher influx of juniors to senior cricket. Ultimately this will grow the success of the BCC.

Peter Godwin 4th XI Captain

15 BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 JUNIOR SEASON REVIEW

The 2019/20 Junior Season was another successful one for the club both on and off the field. Congratulations to all teams for a great season, in particular, the U16’3 who competed in the Semi-Finals. Unfortunately, the result did not go our way, but all players should be proud of the season they had.

I would like to thank the tireless work done by the junior coaches this season. Matt Rose’Meyer (U10’s), John Canfield (U12’s), Michael Kogelman (U14’s) and Alex McCann & Andy Jurss (U16’s) did a fantastic job. These coaches put a lot of time into the players development and ensure the team environment meets the club’s expectations.

At the core of all our junior sides is our amazing Team Managers. Our team managers are the key people in communicating within the teams and the club as a whole. They ensure players are available to play, assist in organising lifts, morning teas, scoring, BBQ’s, MyCricket administration and much more. They ensured all teams were organised and certainly make the job of the coaches much easier. This season we had Beccy Dawber (U10’s), John Young (U12’s), Adrian Baldock (U14’s) and Cheryl Smit (U16’s). A big thank you to all of you for all your efforts.

We have some fantastic people volunteering their time into our junior program. To our Coaches & Team Managers, thank you for ensuring our young cricketers are well coached and enjoy learning the game of cricket. Boronia Cricket Club promotes an environment that is friendly, safe and fun and you as volunteers have a big impact in shaping this.

Our Woolworths Junior Blasters Program had another successful year. Our participation numbers remained stable with 15 participants. The goal is to achieve 20 participants to allow us to grow and see this flow through into the rest of the Junior Program. This beauty of this program not only allows us to develop the players skills from an early age, but in terms of recruiting players to play at Boronia it is pivotal.

I would like to thank Cameron Godwin who put his hand up to coach the Woolworth Blasters as part of his Homesdale exchange application. I would also like to thank Andrea Godwin who approached me to take on the role of Woolworths Coordinator. Both did an exceptional job in recruiting participants, running the program and creating a fun and social environment (including BBQ’s after each session).

A fantastic initiative that was introduced this season was the Junior Awards Night. The idea around this was to create an event that brings the whole club together (juniors, seniors & parents). Since the introduction of Friday/Saturday cricket, the traditional Saturday morning Junior Match Reports have been lost.

To combat this, the Junior Awards Night was developed. It was hoped that over the course of the season, the club would hold 3-4 of these awards nights in place of a junior training session. A group of senior players would conduct a fielding clinic at Tormore with all the junior players, while the parents and club representatives socialised. At the completion of the clinic, awards would be presented to junior players of the previous rounds of cricket.

BORONIA CRICKET CLUB 97TH ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 16 While we were able to host one Awards Night, which was a raving success, we were unable to grow on this with any more nights. Various factors contributed to this mainly the impact of BFC preseason. This can easily be overcome by providing BFC with the dates of the Awards Nights in advance to allow them to relocate training on those nights.

It is hoped that the club can build the Junior Awards Night into something fantastic, bringing the whole club together.

Once again thankyou to everyone that contributed to our junior program this season especially those that assisted me along the way. As we look ahead to next season, we know it is going to be a season like none other, however, I believe we are in a strong position to handle whatever comes our way.
