There might be a few, when runners recognize and greet friends and training partners, or when they finally get to the starting line, do their last minute check, and realize that everything is perfect for the race. You might see a few more smiles when the start gun goes off and the runners are finally able to begin the trek that they have spent months training for. BUT - at the finish line, when it seems as if every muscle is screaming and it’s painful to even walk, you’ll see a smile slowly spread across the runner’s face – they realize they’ve finally done it – they’ve completed the 26 miles, 385 yards marathon distance, a huge achievement no matter if it’s your first, tenth, or even 50th time. That smile continues to shine the rest of the day, only to briefly disappear later that day when you’re alone and realize that you might be certifiably crazy, but quickly returning when you think it was worth it anyway. Likewise, the people in charge of the race don’t smile much race morning either. Just like the runners, the volunteers have been working months for this one single moment. There’s no room for mistakes, because we can’t drop out or save ourselves for the races in the following weeks. It all comes down to this one day. And there’s more to it than just making sure our shoes are tied, our number is pinned on, and we’re at the start line it time. BUT – once the majority of the runners have finished, some of the runners have thanked us, and we receive reports that all but the last few miles of the course have been cleaned and turned back over to the City, that same smile slowly spreads across our faces. We’ve done it – we’ve collectively put on a 26-mile, 385-yard race that more than 99% of the participants enjoyed. It’s a huge accomplishment, and one that we’re proud of. There are always going to be problems with parking, going down steps in the American Airlines Center, lines at the bathrooms, or congestion around the finish line area. But we try to make sure we’ve addressed every issue we can so that everything is in place for the runners to accomplish their goals, and have a fun time doing so. For those who like the stats – we had registrations of 3,662 in the marathon, 4,413 in the half marathon, and 2,146 in the relay race (427 teams) for a total of 10,221 runners, an increase of almost 9% over the previous year. The temperature was perfect for a race, with a low of 32 degrees at the start with no wind, heading up to a high of 63 degrees shortly after the race was officially over, and an average humidity of 46% for the day. We would like to thank you for your post-race comments, some of which run across the bottom of the pages of this book. We are contemplating the suggestions and resolving to overcome any issues that would keep from making this the best race you have ever run. Elites and TV Coverage: WFAA broadcast the Dallas White Rock Marathon race in expanded coverage for the first time ever! Between the pre-race show Saturday night and the live coverage Sunday morning, runners were able for the first time to see parts of the race they may have missed during their run. Pavel Andreyev did a great job running his race, biding his time to overtake Moses Kemboi, the men’s leader at the time, and then picking off the remaining elite women runners still between him and the finish line. He caught them all except for Lioumila Kortchaguina, our women’s champion, and Lyudmyla Pushkina who was the women’s second place finisher. Kortchaguina, our women’s champion from 2003, was also this year’s winner of the 2005 Cooper Complete Challenge presented by Hummer. As a result, Kortchaguina took home an additional $25,000 on top of her $12,000 first place prize money, and set a new women’s race record of 2:30:03 in doing so. Pavel, with a time of 2:15:24, told us that winning the race has renewed his confidence and that he would now consider running competitively for a few more years. On a sad note: Fellow marathoner Tom Altena of Springfield, Mo., completed his first marathon at the 2005 Dallas White Rock Marathon, and celebrated with his wife Heidi and their two children afterward in the American Airlines Center. While there Heidi began feeling ill. She later had a seizure and passed away at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. Altena’s friends have established a trust to help support the couple’s 4- and 1-year-old children. Checks, made out to the Cameron and Nathan Altena Educational Trust, can be sent to: Hope Community Church, 2121 South Blackman Road, Springfield, MO 65809. The 2006 Dallas White Rock Marathon will again start and finish at Victory, starting at 8:00am on Sunday, December 10th. We look forward to seeing you at the starting line, and enjoying your smiles again at the finish line. Congratulation runners, and we extend our grateful appreciation to a wonderful army of volunteers. • Early Forms of Long-Distance Communication
EARLY FORMS OF LONG-DISTANCE COMMUNICATION In this material, you will learn about Telegraphy, Telephone and GSM architecture Before the development of the electric telegraph in the 19th century revolutionized how information was transmitted across long distances, ancient civilizations such as those in China, Egypt and Greece used drumbeats or smoke signals to exchange information between far-flung points. However, such methods were limited by the weather and the need for an uninterrupted line of sight between receptor points. These limitations also lessened the effectiveness of the semaphore, a modern precursor to the electric telegraph. Developed in the early 1790s, the semaphore consisted of a series of hilltop stations that each had large movable arms to signal letters and numbers and two telescopes with which to see the other stations. Like ancient smoke signals, the semaphore was susceptible to weather and other factors that hindered visibility. A different method of transmitting information was needed to make regular and reliable long-distance communication workable. Did You Know? SOS, the internationally recognized distress signal, does not stand for any particular words. Instead, the letters were chosen because they are easy to transmit in Morse code: "S" is three dots, and "O" is three dashes. The Electric Telegraph In the early 19th century, two developments in the field of electricity opened the door to the production of the electric telegraph. First, in 1800, the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) invented the battery, which reliably stored an electric current and allowed the current to be used in a controlled environment. Second, in 1820, the Danish physicist Hans Christian Oersted (1777-1851) demonstrated the connection between electricity and magnetism by deflecting a magnetic needle with an electric current.

  • Cubed Circle Newsletter 241 – Consistency Is Hard
Cubed Circle Newsletter 241 – Consistency is Hard As many of probably noticed, we have been posting late and sporadically for the last month. This was, obviously, not our intention, but with the second semester eating into my free time, staying up to date is a tall order. Even without the newsletter itself seeing weekly publication the site has still remained up to date on a weekly basis, thanks primarily to co-author Ben Carass, as well as guest writers Paul Cooke and Leslie Lee III. But, the newsletter has survived for well over 241 weeks, and will hopefully thrive in the years to come. I have attempted to make provisions for publishing related tasks which should minimize the risk of major delays (obviously there will be some regular delays, as this late issue can attest), but we have some fail safes in place in order to keep this to a minimum. With all of this said, we have a great issue for everyone this week with Paul Cooke discussing the Pro-Wrestling Only Greatest Wrestler Ever project and his personal experience with the poll, Ben covers the news including tons of results from Japan and the Lesnar USADA violation, the Mixed Bag returns with a look at comedy wrestling, Ricochet/Ospreay, and a potential WWE match of the year -- plus Ben also looks at last Sunday's Battleground show and the first RAW of the brand split (a very good show). Also, for those unaware, we now have an official Twitter account @CubedCircleWres allowing the banger to unprecedented highs at @BenCarass and @RyanClingman.
