Australian Tropical Rainforest Plants - Online edition Helmholtzia acorifolia F.Muell. Family: Philydraceae Mueller, F.J.H. von (1865) Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae 5: 203. Type: Queensland, Rockingham Bay, 1866, J. Dallachy s.n.; lecto: MEL; iso: B, K, M. Fide U. Hamann, Willdenowia Beiheft 4: 155 (1966). Common name: Puckerum; Helmholtzia; Kuranda Stem Stem or rhizome +/- horizontal or slightly ascending but the leaves +/- erect and reaching to a height of 1-2 m. Leaves Leaves arranged in one plane and held like a hand fan. Leaf blades glabrous, sword-like, up to 100- 200 x 4 cm, venation longitudinal and parallel. Leaf blade constricted on one side about 1/4 of the way up from the base to form a 'petiole'. Reticulate veins sinuous, +/- at right angles to the midrib. Flowers Inflorescence up to 30 cm long, bracteoles lanceolate up to 12 mm long. Individual flowers sessile, Flowers. © Barry Jago outer tepals lanceolate, about 8-14 mm long, hairy on the outer surface, inner tepals about 3 mm long. Stamens about 4 mm long, anthers bright yellow, locules about 2 mm long +/- clasping the style. Ovary about 2 mm long, densely hairy on the outer surface. Ovules numerous in each locule. Style about 5 mm long. Fruit Fruit globose, about 5-10 mm diam., 3-lobed, +/- translucent. Seeds about 2 mm long, dark reddish- brown. Seedlings First pair of leaves linear, about 4-10 x 0.5-1 mm, apex acute, base sheathing the stem, glabrous, venation longitudinal and parallel, petiole absent. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade produced in one Leaves and Flowers. -

Australian Essential Oils – History and Emerging Trends Ashley Dowell – Essential Oil Producers Association of Australia & Southern Cross University 23 rd October 2019 Introduction Australia has a unique flora largely of Gondwanan origin with later influence from the Indian subcontinent and South East Asia. Gondwana land was a pre-historic super continent including Australia, New Zealand, South America, Antarctica, Africa and the Indian sub-continent. Although separating early, it is proposed that Australia and India re-connected for a period of time before separating again. In more recent history Australia was connected to South-east Asia by land bridges which arose due to falling sea levels resulting from ice age glaciation Dominant plant families present in Australia include the essential oil bearing genus: Myrtaceae – Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Leptospermum Rutaceae – Boronia, Citrus Other significant essential oil bearing plant families found in Australia are the Santalaceae, Myoporaceae, and Cupressaceae. Australia is often perceived as a land of deserts but is in fact a diverse collection of fire and drought adapted environments. Eucalypt woodlands make up to 39% of Australian vegetative cover, predominantly in New South Wales and Queensland followed by Hummock grasslands at 23% found mostly in Western Australia, Queensland and New SouthWales and Acacia woodlands occupying 10-20%, mostly in Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales. There are significant areas of Acacia shrublands, Tussock grasslands and Chenopod shrubs and forblands, particularly in South Australia. There are relatively small (less than 70,000 Km2) but biologically significant areas of tropical and temperate rainforest in eastern coastal areas from Queensland to Tasmania, as well as Tall eucalypts forests and Callitris and Casuarina forests further inland and in sub-alpine areas. -

Handout 2 Natural Heritage Criteria and the Attributes of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area The notes that follow were derived by deconstructing the original 1988 nomination document to identify the specific themes and attributes which have been recognised as contributing to the Outstanding Universal Value of the Wet Tropics. The notes also provide brief statements of justification for the specific examples provided in the nomination documentation. Steve Goosem, December 2012 Natural Heritage Criteria: (1) Outstanding examples representing the major stages in the earth’s evolutionary history Values: refers to the surviving taxa that are representative of eight ‘stages’ in the evolutionary history of the earth. Relict species and lineages are the elements of this World Heritage value. Attribute of OUV (a) The Age of the Pteridophytes Significance One of the most significant evolutionary events on this planet was the adaptation in the Palaeozoic Era of plants to life on the land. The earliest known (plant) forms were from the Silurian Period more than 400 million years ago. These were spore-producing plants which reached their greatest development 100 million years later during the Carboniferous Period. This stage of the earth’s evolutionary history, involving the proliferation of club mosses (lycopods) and ferns is commonly described as the Age of the Pteridophytes. The range of primitive relict genera representative of the major and most ancient evolutionary groups of pteridophytes occurring in the Wet Tropics is equalled only in the more extensive New Guinea rainforests that were once continuous with those of the listed area. -

The current pantropical distribution of the order suggests an historical Gondwanan distribution, however the evolutionary history of the group has never been analyzed in a temporal context to test if the order is old enough to attribute its current distribution to vicariance mediated by the break-up of the supercontinent. Based on a phylogeny derived from morphological and molecular characters, we develop a hypothesis for the spatial and temporal evolution of Zingiberales using Dispersal-Vicariance Analysis (DIVA) combined with a local molecular clock technique that enables the simultaneous analysis of multiple gene loci with multiple calibration points. -
