The RF Board clearly did not wish to discuss his reasons at the meeting. It did, however, distribute a printed response to Steve Coleman’s critical Ringing and Money article (p.525), which we are pleased to publish in this edition (p.576). There is little doubt that the Foundation is facing serious issues and one can but admire its optimism that “faith” will carry it through; thus far it has not succeeded in attracting any new trustee talent to help with the work. If you think you can help please do get in touch with the RF Chairman, Brian Meads. The Ringing World Ltd AGM showed that the company is under no illusions about some of its own difficult challenges in the next few years. Nevertheless the RW Board did its best to convince company members that it intends to tackle the issues of declining paper circulation and the need for a new business model with vigour. St Giles-in-the-Fields: a 50th anniversary by Pauline Dingley (née Fennell) and Dennis Ellisdon

This brought him ringers from Kent decided to enliven their into contact with bells and ringers for the first working day with some ringing. All were time and throughout his fifty years as Rector working in central London at the time, so the he was always extremely supportive of the Thursday lunchtime ringing at St Giles-in-the- band. He was an active President of the Fields, Holborn, began. Gordon Taylor had introduced a lunchtime service within six months of his arrival in the parish and by the 1960s it was being attended by 70-80 people. The Kent ringers, including David Manger and John Faircloth, rang for this service on the first Thursday of each month. The Rector announced this in 1964 in the parish Newsletter. “On Thursday, 4th June St Giles bells will be rung from 1 to 1.25pm. They have seldom been heard at lunchtime on a working day.” In September 1965, Tony Lewis, from Chislehurst, was appealing in The The 1984 St Giles-in-the-Fields Christmas Dinner Ringing World for any ringers working in the West End to come along, stating that the group was now ringing regularly on the first Thursday of the month from 12.55 to 1.25pm. The British Museum connection In September 1964 Pauline Fennell, who had been a student in London and originally from Kent, started her first job at the British Museum and joined the Thursday band. She soon discovered that her boss had been a ringer at one time, as had several other BM staff. She suggested that they might ring for the lunchtime service on the other Thursdays in the month. Gordon Taylor was delighted with this offer and also allowed Pauline to teach a few of her colleagues to ring on tied bells at lunchtime on a Monday. They were never able to raise a full British Museum band and several of the first Thursday ringers came to help on the other Thursdays. Thus, from mid-1965, ringing gradually became established every Thursday and a farewell quarter peal for Pauline, who was moving to Reading, in September 1966 calls her “tower captain of the Thursday lunchtime band”. In The band that rang the quarter peal to celebrate Gordon Taylor’s 90th birthday on Trafalgar Day The Ringing World of 14th October, where 2005 (l-r): Robert Lewis (Deputy Ringing Master 2009-2010), Richard Casserley (Ringing Master this quarter is recorded, Belfry Gossip has a 1997-2007), Stella Shell, Revd Gordon Taylor, MA (Rector 1949-1999), James Ingham (Treasurer notice stating that ringers are welcome at St 1996, Secretary & Treasurer 1997-2008), Dennis Ellisdon (Deputy Ringing Master 2003-2007, Giles-in-the-Fields, each Thursday, to ring for Ringing Master 2007-2014), Adrian Udal (Secretary & Treasurer 2008-present), Peter Blight, the lunchtime service. In 2008 the new Master, Dennis Ellisdon, supported by the Associate Rector, Revd Julian Davies, started to teach some of the congregation to ring. Practices were held on a Friday but soon changed to a Tuesday and they continue to this day, ably supported by several members of the Thursday band. Many people have started to learn as a result of the ringers having a stall and demonstrations at the St Giles Fayre in early September. Sadly most have dropped out, but a few and several from the original nucleus have stuck to it and make it possible to ring for Sunday service when they are available and this augments the regular bi-monthly Sunday evening quarters organised by the present master, Tom Lawrance. Restoration of the bells In the early 2000s there was a consensus among the ringers that the bells needed an overhaul, so a subcommittee led by the Master, Richard Casserley and the Secretary, James Ingham, set about getting quotations from various bell hangers. Three wise men admiring St Giles’ tower from the garden of ‘the Angel next door’ – The Rector and PCC were fully behind the Richard Casserley, Dennis Ellisdon and James Ingham proposal, but, due to a heavy financial commitment to renovate the organ, they were lunchtime ring since 1967. It allowed us to raise the profile of ringing amongst the general public and show them what was involved. It is difficult to catch your sally when the wind moves it a foot to one side unexpectedly just as you make a grab for it. It tends to fire out the touch amidst great hilarity. Would we do it again? If we can get the same level of support that we managed this year then yes we will. Should your Guild/ Association consider doing something similar? I would definitely recommend it. It raises public awareness of ringing, shows the fun side of ringing, and it takes ringing out of the church to people that would not otherwise experience it. I would like to express our thanks to George Dawson for the loan of his Campanile, Taylors for the transportation, and our two teams of helpers (too numerous to mention) from the Bingham District, Newark District, and Nottingham District for all their efforts. Team F (Salisbury Diocesan Guild) The Tewkesbury Shield 2014 This team’s opening rounds were good and they started with purpose. The front bells found the megatittums difficult, and there were 3 serious method mistakes which they struggled to recover from. This was a real shame as the team had winning potential but struggled to maintain it because of the mistakes. However, there was good rhythm throughout the piece. Peal speed: 3:26. Team G (University of London Society) There should have been more opening rounds, as the ringing was not settled entering the test piece.
