In partnership with activeNewham and the University of East London, we will enable every Year 7 pupil in a Newham secondary school to access over 20 exciting sports that are not usually delivered as part of the curriculum in schools. Newham’s Every Child a Sports Person (NECaSP) is part of the council’s wider commitment to building community resilience and ensuring young people in the borough have the same opportunities as children in more affluent areas. I am delighted that Newham’s Every Child programme is able to build on the hugely impressive work carried out by our schools and provides additional ways for our young people to engage with local sports clubs and activeNewham programmes. Wherever you live in Newham, we are bringing together the very best that is on offer locally in our leisure centres, parks and sports facilities to help young people to get up, get out and get active. By working in partnership with local sports clubs in Newham and supporting local activities, our sports programmes are fully accessible and provide community activities that bring our residents together. The introductory NECaSP sessions and the information in this booklet will help you to discover the right sport for you. activeNewham and borough clubs have qualified and committed staff who are able to provide you with all the support and guidance that you need. Building on the “Inspire a Generation” theme from the 2012 London Games, I strongly believe that sport can inspire young people to live a healthy, more active way of life that will help them achieve their potential. Sir Robin Wales Mayor of Newham 4 EVERY CHILD A SPORTS PERSON | activeNewham HOW TO TAKE PART The NECaSP programme provides introductory sessions in schools to encourage young people to try a sport and encourage them to become physically active on a daily basis. As part of an introductory day at your school, you will have the chance to vote for the sports you would like delivered in your school for the next six weeks. The sports available to you would not usually be delivered as part of your normal PE curriculum and the day provides a great opportunity to try out new activities. Whether you are interested in competing or just want to stay active, there is a vast range of clubs in the borough, with over 20 different sports to choose from in the NECaSP programme. You can access many of these sports clubs at a subsidised rate after experiencing the introductory sessions.* To maintain motivation, the University of East London (UEL) will host a number of activity days which schools can take part in. These will provide six to eight different sports for young people to enjoy throughout the day. All of these sports lead on to sports clubs hosted at UEL SportsDock. This booklet outlines the various ways you can continue taking part in any sport that has captured your interest. Keep reading to see the wide range of clubs and opportunities open to Newham young people and to find out about the following sporting opportunities: • Sports clubs in Newham • Leisure centres in Newham • UEL SportsDock • Neighbourhood sports activities • Female sport and fitness programmes • Disability sports programme • Holiday and half-term activities *Contact the individual clubs directly for more information. www.activeNewham.org.uk | 0844 414 2728 5 WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NEXT STEP 1 A range of new sport will be available for you to participate in as part of your PE curriculum. Regeneration Committee City Hall The Queen’s Walk London SE1 2AA Switchboard: 020 7983 4000 Minicom: 020 7983 4458 Web: www.london.gov.uk Boris Johnson Mayor 17 April 2015 Dear Boris Regeneration Committee – The Royal Docks I am writing further to our short review of the proposals to accelerate regeneration of the Royal Docks. We were grateful for the opportunity to visit the Docks with the Housing and Land team in December 2014. Following the visit, the Committee met on 5 February with Eric Sorensen, former Chief Executive of the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) and representatives of the GLA, London First, and Centre for Cities. All the guests at the Committee’s meeting emphasised the scale of opportunity that the Docks present for London. We acknowledge the strategic imperative to get regeneration of the Royal Docks right, and we set out our findings below. The Mayor must take account of important lessons from Canary Wharf Our discussion revealed a number of ways in which the Mayor should learn from the development of Canary Wharf. Eric Sorensen highlighted the fact that previous plans for the Royal Docks have largely failed. For example, under the governance of the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC), while there were plans for an exhibition centre, retail shopping centre, and mixed housing development at Pontoon Dock, only the Excel exhibition centre was built.1 Eric observed that both the size and physical layout of the site present significant challenges for the regeneration of the area. However, in contrast to the LDDC – which was a time-limited organisation – the GLA is a major landowner at the Royal Docks, giving the Mayor higher level of control than in other Opportunity Areas in the London Plan.

Our vision for the Lea River Park is for high quality, accessible parkland incorporating open space and waterways with new walking and cycling routes which will add to the decades of investment in transport infrastructure that have gone into the borough, enabling our community to be even better connected. Running through the spine of the borough’s key opportunity area, the park and improved connections will help to attract further investment into the borough whilst providing high quality leisure and recreational space to those who live and work here. With the scale of regeneration taking place in Newham, it makes us one of the most exciting places to visit in the UK.
