  • Sharing Is Caring
Master Thesis 30 hp (Vårterminen 2013) Submitted May 27th 2013 #SharingIsCaring: An Exploratory Study of Content of Tweets, Situation of Tweeting and Motivations to Use Twitter while Watching Television Series By Linda Isabelle Skibbe Supervisor: Sven Ross Stockholm University - Department for Media Studies I Abstract I. Abstract The internet and social media have had a significant impact on recipients’ media consumption. As the converging media environment recipients face today offers not only more media products but also new practices of using certain media products, this study focuses on how the social micro-blogging service Twitter impacts the watching of television series. The presented study aims at explaining a new form of media reception by employing a multi- method approach. A content analysis case study of tweets about the US-American series “Homeland” and the German series “Tatort” will give insight into the Twitter content on two different series. Further, qualitative semi-standardized interviews and a survey will shed light on the situational aspects and motivational factors to use Twitter while watching television series. The uses and gratification theory is used as a backdrop to study the motivations to use Twitter while watching television series. The results of the content analysis on the two series indicate that there is a strong focus on the series itself within the tweets. Nevertheless, both series provide somewhat differing Twitter content. While tweets on “Tatort” are more critical and realistic towards the series, tweets about “Homeland” are more likely to be referential. The situation of tweeting while watching television series seems to be characterized by the usage of a second screen.

  • SNICK - Round 4
SNICK - Round 4 1. This object was directly inspired by a failed children's remote control shaped like a hammer. Dan Klitzner, the creator of this object, also designed the spherical Perplexus and intended for this object to make Homer Simpson's "D'oh" sound. A spin-off this object resembles a yo-yo and needs to be (*) "zinged." The original version of this object included "Vox" and "Beat" modes, the latter of which lacks verbal instructions. This object indicated a user's score by playing drum sounds to represent ones and crank sounds to represent tens. An "extreme" version of this object added options for spinning and flicking. For 10 points, name this toy that commands its user to take simple actions including "pull it" and "twist it." ANSWER: Bop-It <Nelson, Video Games> 2. Description acceptable. In one scene, this man is nearly crushed to death at the bottom of a well while the narrator muses on the words "if only." This man crafts a beautiful dollhouse that his spoiled granddaughter rejects, screaming, "I want the one that I saw on the television!" This man loses his faith in Rex, who was traumatically deafened in a flood and was voiced by (*) Hugo Weaving. Esmé is the wife of this man, whose shoe is urinated on at a county fair, prompting him to lower a guess by three ounces. This man sings "If I Had Words" to an animal that he also enters into a sheepherding contest. James Cromwell played, for 10 points, what man who tells the title character of a 1995 family film "That'll do, pig"? ANSWER: Arthur Hoggett (or Farmer Hoggett; accept the farmer from Babe or similar; prompt on "Farmer") <Vopava, Movies> 3.

  • The List: All Primetime Series on Television Calendar Year 2015
The List: All Primetime Series on Television Calendar Year 2015 Source: Nielsen, Live+7 data provided by FX Networks Research. 12/29/14-12/27/15. Original telecasts only. Excludes repeats, specials, movies, news, sports, programs with only one telecast, and Spanish language nets. Cable: Mon-Sun, 8-11P. Broadcast: Mon-Sat, 8-11P; Sun 7-11P. "<<" denotes below Nielsen minimum reporting standards based on P2+ Total U.S. Rating to the tenth (0.0). Important to Note: This list utilizes the TV Guide listing service to denote original telecasts (and exclude repeats and specials), and also line-items original series by the internal coding/titling provided to Nielsen by each network. Thus, if a network creates different "line items" to denote different seasons or different day/time periods of the same series within the calendar year, both entries are listed separately. The following provides examples of separate line items that we counted as one show: %(7 V%HLQJ0DU\-DQH%(,1*0$5<-$1(6DQG%(,1*0$5<-$1(6 1%& V7KH9RLFH92,&(DQG92,&(78( 1%& V7KH&DUPLFKDHO6KRZ&$50,&+$(/6+2:3DQG&$50,&+$(/6+2: Again, this is a function of how each network chooses to manage their schedule. Hence, we reference this as a list as opposed to a ranker. Based on our estimated manual count, the number of unique series are: 2015³1,415 primetime series (1,524 line items listed in the file). 2014³1,517 primetime series (1,729 line items).
