REGISTER De Jaren Zestig. … a Paty Jezdec je Strach …und deine liebe auch 10 + 8 101 Dalmatiërs 19 x Europa 1964 1984 20 Days in Autumn 2001: A Space Odyssey 24 godziny Jadwigi L. 55 Days at Peking ‘6 september 1966’ ‘69 Année Érotique’ 8 ½ 9 dney odnogo goda ‘A Banda’ A Bit of Liverpool À Bout de Souffle ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ A Day In The Life ‘A Day in the Life’ A Few Notes On Our Food Problem ‘A Follow te Sun’ ‘A Hazy Shade of Winter’ A Kind of Loving ‘A la Huelga’ A Man for all Seasons A Many-Splendoured Thing A New Perspective A Patriot For Me A Prophetic Minority A Raisin in the Sun A ritmo de twist A Summer Bird-Cage A Taste of Honey A Touch of Love ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ ‘Aan de schrijvers van Azië en Afrika’ Aan die vuile viezeriken van de VPRO Aarde van mensen Abakanowicz, Magdalena Abbas, Mahmoud Abbey Road ABC Abdul-Malik, Ahmed Abernathy, Sylvia ‘Abou Ali Twist’ Abrahams, Lionel Abrams, Muhal Richard Abschied von gestern Abstract Abstract Expressionism Abu Dhabi Accattone Accra Achebe, Chinua Acorns for Peace ‘Act Naturally’ Action Action Painting Ådalen 31 Adam’s Apple Adam’s Recital Adamo Adams, Armanta Adderley, Cannonball Addis Abeba Adelheid Adenauer, Konrad Adieu Philippine Adler & Sullivan Adler, Renata Adonis Adorno, Theodor Adotevi, Stanislas Aeschylos Afghaans Africa Addio African and Akamba Handicrafts African Fiesta Sukisa African Jazz ‘Africana’ Afrika Afrikaanse ritmes ‘Afrikaliefde’ Afro-Latin Soul ‘After Hours’ ‘After You’ve Gone’ ‘Ag Pleez Daddy’ Agit 883 Agitprop Agnew, Spiro ‘Agua De Beber’ Ahmedabad ‘Ain’t That Peculiar’ Aksjonov, Vasili Al Nasser Salah Ad-Din Alabama ‘Alabama’ Alamo, Frank Alarcón, Rolando Albanië Albee, Edward Albers, Anni Albert (Belgische prins) Alcock, Jimmy Aldrich, Robert Alea, Tomás Gutiérrez ‘Alex Soul’ Alexander, Christopher Alexandria Alexis Corner’s Blues Incorporated Alfa Romeo Alfie Algemeen Handelsblad Algerije Ali, Muhammad (Clay, Cassius) Ali, Tariq Alibaba Twist’ ‘All Africa’ All the News That’s Fit to Sing ‘All You Need is Love’ ‘Allah Meaak’ ‘Allamouni’ Alleman Allen, Woody Allende, Salvador Almeida, Guilherme de Al-Nakd al-Dhati Ba’da al-Hazima Alpert, Herb Alphaville Älskande par Altamont (festival) Althusser, Louis Alvermann, Dirk Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Amado, Jorge Amaral, Olga de Amaral, Tarsila do Amarillo Amaya, Mario Ambulans America in the Sixties. • Lonely Places, Dangerous Ground
Introduction Nicholas Ray and the Potential of Cinema Culture STEVEN RYBIN AND WILL SCHEIBEL THE DIRECTOR OF CLASSIC FILMS SUCH AS They Live by Night, In a Lonely Place, Johnny Guitar, Rebel Without a Cause, and Bigger Than Life, among others, Nicholas Ray was the “cause célèbre of the auteur theory,” as critic Andrew Sarris once put it (107).1 But unlike his senior colleagues in Hollywood such as Alfred Hitchcock or Howard Hawks, he remained a director at the margins of the American studio system. So too has he remained at the margins of academic film scholarship. Many fine schol‑ arly works on Ray, of course, have been published, ranging from Geoff Andrew’s important auteur study The Films of Nicholas Ray: The Poet of Nightfall and Bernard Eisenschitz’s authoritative biography Nicholas Ray: An American Journey (both first published in English in 1991 and 1993, respectively) to books on individual films by Ray, such as Dana Polan’s 1993 monograph on In a Lonely Place and J. David Slocum’s 2005 col‑ lection of essays on Rebel Without a Cause. In 2011, the year of his centennial, the restoration of his final film,We Can’t Go Home Again, by his widow and collaborator Susan Ray, signaled renewed interest in the director, as did the publication of a new biography, Nicholas Ray: The Glorious Failure of an American Director, by Patrick McGilligan. Yet what Nicholas Ray’s films tell us about Classical Hollywood cinema, what it was and will continue to be, is far from certain. 1 © 2014 State University of New York Press, Albany 2 Steven Rybin and Will Scheibel After all, what most powerfully characterizes Ray’s films is not only what they are—products both of Hollywood’s studio and genre systems—but also what they might be.

  • AU Professor Has Hand in Creating Iconic Film to Be Shown at Festivals 8/30/11
AU professor has hand in creating iconic film to be shown at festivals 8/30/11 In 1973, as a undergraduate at Harpur College at Binghamton University, Peer Bode - now a professor of video art in the School of Art & Design at Alfred University -- was among the students who enrolled in a class on collaborative film-making, taught by Nicholas Ray, a legendary director whose credits include Rebel without a Cause, Johnny Guitar, They Live by Night and 55 Days at Peking. As a class, the students collaborated on what turned out to be Ray's last film, We Can't Go Home, "an experimental, multi-narrative film bordering on cinema and visual arts" that is also described as "Ray's posthumous masterpiece."It was an experience that had a profound effect on Bode, as an artist and as a teacher. "Working with cinema auteur Nicholas Ray for two years was remarkable," Bode said. "I was fortunate to have had the opportunity. As a student, I saw a very large project being built up piece by piece. We learned filmmaking, moving image making, by making the film. I experienced being active in camera work, lighting, and editing. Learning was embedded in doing. "I know that discovery has entered into my own teaching. Learning the richness of ideas and the richness of one's medium by engaging in it, is an immersive material making and thinking. The ideas have agency. The materials have agency. This practice is empowering and rewarding. We were making a multi image, multi narrative using 35 mm, 16 mm and 8 mm film and also " video using the Paik-Abe video synthesizer.

Thoralf Klein Thoralf Klein The Boxers on the Silver Screen ˙176˙ The Boxers on the Silver Screen: The Red Lantern (1919), Alarm in Peking (1937) and 55 Days at Peking (1963)* The first ‘Western’ narratives of the Boxer War appeared well before the fight- ing was actually over.1 Although this should caution us against assuming a clear-cut transition from event to memory, it was firstly the relief of Beijing on 14 August 1900 and, more importantly, the formal conclusion of the war through the Boxer Protocol of 7 September 1901 that allowed the retelling of the calamitous and harrowing occurrences. Novels, popular histories and short films repackaged an event that had been experienced as open and ongoing into coherent plots, complete from beginning to end. In so doing, they created a mainstream that increasingly (and narrowly) identified the Boxer War with * I wish to thank Stef Franck (Vlaamse Dienst voor Filmcultuur, Brussels, Belgium) for drawing my attention to The Red Lantern and generously providing me with a copy of the film and the accompanying volume; the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Stiftung (Wiesbaden, Germany) for lending me VHS and DVD copies of Alarm in Peking at various stages of my research; and the Margaret Herrick Library (Beverly Hills, CA) for its support. Thanks also to Christina Till for her critical reading of an earlier draft. 1 Arguably the first book-length fictional treatment that takes the diplomatic and -mil itary conflict into account (though not the first on the Boxers) is Julian Croskey, The S. G.: A Romance of Peking (Brooklyn, NY: Mason, 1900), published even before the siege of the Legations Quarter ended.

The Moody Blues Tour / Set List Project - updated April 9, 2006 compiled by Linda Bangert Please send any additions or corrections to Linda Bangert ([email protected]) and notice of any broken links to Neil Ottenstein ([email protected]). This listing of tour dates, set lists, opening acts, additional musicians was derived from many sources, as noted on each file. Of particular help were "Higher and Higher" magazine and their website at www.moodies- magazine.com and the Moody Blues Official Fan Club (OFC) Newsletters. For a complete listing of people who contributed, click here. Particular thanks go to Neil Ottenstein, who hosts these pages, and to Bob Hardy, who helped me get these pages converted to html. One-off live performances, either of the band as a whole or of individual members, are not included in this listing, but generally can be found in the Moody Blues FAQ in Section 8.7 - What guest appearances have the band members made on albums, television, concerts, music videos or print media? under the sub-headings of "Visual Appearances" or "Charity Appearances". The current version of the FAQ can be found at www.toadmail.com/~notten/FAQ-TOC.htm I've construed "additional musicians" to be those who played on stage in addition to the members of the Moody Blues. Although Patrick Moraz was legally determined to be a contract player, and not a member of the Moody Blues, I have omitted him from the listing of additional musicians for brevity. Moraz toured with the Moody Blues from 1978 through 1990. From 1965-1966 The Moody Blues were Denny Laine, Clint Warwick, Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge, although Warwick left the band sometime in 1966 and was briefly replaced with Rod Clarke.

PRESS RELEASE Brussels • 27 June 2018 Exhibition Revolutions – Records & Rebels – 1966-1970 ING Art Center 24.10.2018 – 10.03.2019 The scent of Flower Power is in the air at ING Art Center, which will be hosting the exhibition Revolutions – Records & Rebels – 1966-1970 from 24 October onwards. This covers the ideals, aspirations, dreams and thirst for freedom as well as the activism and anti-establishment protests of the late 1960s. These cultural, social, artistic and technological revolutions, which all took place between 1966 and 1970, have shaped our current lifestyles and still have an impact on how we look to the future today. This unique social and cultural context is presented with the aid of some 250 symbolic objects from the spheres of fashion, music, design, graphic design and photography. What's more, during the tour, Sennheiser headphones (the specialist in AMBEO technology providing a 3D sound experience) will surround visitors with classics from artists including The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and Janis Joplin. Through these snatches of music and videos, which will put the exhibits in their proper context, visitors will enjoy a truly immersive experience. Originally conceived by the Victoria and Albert Museum, this exhibition kicked off in London before going on display at the Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal and Fabbrica del Vapore, Milan. For its Belgian incarnation, ING Art Center has adapted the content by delving into topics relating specifically to Belgian history. Consequently, Louvain's student protests, Jazz Bilzen and the Amougies Festival, regarded as the first European Woodstock, will also feature in the exhibition (incidentally, the photo of Frank Zappa that appears on the exhibition poster was taken at the Amougies Festival).
