Marmora and Lakes Nomination Page 51 of 83 for Kraft Celebration Tour – Page 52 of 83 Chris Malette At Large Deloro mine site's lingering legacy: arsenic

By Chris Malette, The Intelligencer

Chris Malette

A lot of us give little or no thought to one of the most egregious environmental disasters in Ontario right here in our own backyard.

Wind turbines in the County, you ask?

Phhht.

The Intelligencer “Deloro mine Page 53 of 83 site’s lingering legacy: arsenic” – Please, people. To hear the antis there tell it, we might as well be targeting the good people of Hiroshima all over again, only this time it's birds, turtles and the good money people from Trawna and Ottawa who paid for their little piece of retirement heaven.

No, I'm talking about Deloro, the place lyrically named for the Spanish place “of gold.”

It all began with the Madoc Gold Rush of 1866 when gold was discovered in a farmer's cave near Eldorado. Nearby Deloro soon became the place for more than a dozen mines and mills for processing gold found in the area. The Moira River flowed alongside the tiny settlement.

It boomed for decades, until the gold ran out and the tailing mounds grew, as did the concentration of arsenic and other toxic chemicals in the soil and riverbed of the Moira River. Arsenic was used for decades in the extraction of gold from ore.

The legacy of more than 100 years of industrial ore refining is this — it's been described as the most contaminated site in the province of Ontario.

In the past few years, they've started to cap it. Can't haul it away anywhere, so they're capping it.

According to the Ministry of the Environment website: “Construction on the engineered cap on the tailings area is now nearly 80 per cent complete...

“The engineered cap on the tailings area consists of 122,000 tonnes of sand, 186,000 tonnes of soil, and 250,000 square metres of engineered fabrics.”

They're smothering it, in other words, and then they're going to make it pretty.

“The contractor will return in the spring to plant nearly 20,000 hybrid poplar trees on the cap as part of the planned remediation strategy. At that point the construction of the tailings area cap will be complete.”

Work is expected to be complete by this summer.

Overall, the program, which has cost an estimated $10 million, has been robust. Here's the tally of accomplishments:

• Arsenic Treatment Plant collects and removes arsenic from contaminated groundwater under the site.

• Abandoned mine shafts have been located and sealed.

• Deloro Village Environmental Health Risk Study found the adjacent village of Deloro safe.

• Moira River Study found no adverse effect on aquatic ecosystem. The Moira River is safe to swim in.

• Public consulted on final cleanup plan — with extensive public consultation in 2005.

• Federal environmental assessment was completed and approved in 2009.

• Access road upgrade between Highway 7 and the tailings area were completed January 2011.

• Tailings area engineered cover — started March 2011.

One problem that's never been addressed is the concentrations or pockets of arsenic that made their way down the Moira River, settling in the sediment of Moira Lake and all the way to the mouth of the Moira here in Belleville.

The Intelligencer “Deloro mine Page 54 of 83 site’s lingering legacy: arsenic” – I always wondered what, if anything, came up when they dredged the riverbed off Victoria Park when we had the frazzle ice build up in recent winters. Any arsenic or other toxics in that bottom sediment that came up with the bucket-loads of ice? Anything melt on down into the park after it all disintegrated? We'll never know.

But, hey, the tailings and arsenic mounds at Deloro have nice hybrid poplars growing there.

Like nothing ever happened.

Have to say we were all busting with pride this week when our own former wordsmith Jeremy “Jerr Bear” Ashley hunted down a wanted man ... on his copper bike.

Yup, our former police beat reporter, whom we left to steep too long in cop culture, jumped ship for a better pay cheque and even worse hours and now he's a certified crimebuster on two wheels.

Way to go, Jerr Bear.
