THE ART OF PERFORMANCE FIU | CARTA OVERVIEW 2019-2020 MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN t FIU, live performances from FIU Theatre and AFIU Music are critical components of our students’ education and our mission to enrich the communities we serve. Working with our renowned faculty, accomplished artists-in-residence, and distinguished partners, our talented students hone their craft through critical thinking and experiential learning opportunities designed to prepare them for leadership roles in the 21st century’s creative and cultural economy. The Arts are an important part of our past, our present, and our future: culturally, socially, politically, and economically. They enhance the quality of our lives by connecting us to our senses and to our minds. They inform the way we think, create, discern, solve problems, and understand our rapidly changing world. They empower, motivate, and influence us—not just in the way we think and act as individuals, but as a society. With these thoughts in mind, I proudly present the FIU 2019-2020 performing arts season and invite you to share in the excitement at The Wertheim! Sincerely, Brian Schriner Dean College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts 1 FIU DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE | PRODUCTION PRODUCTION PROCESS BEHIND THE SCENES Students at FIU Theatre are involved in all aspects of the production process. Months before a show opens, students are hard at work in our scenic and costume shops designing, building, and preparing the sets, lights, and costumes. What our audiences see on stage is only a small fraction of the hands-on, collaborative work done by our students. FIU DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE The Theatre Department at Florida International University is uniquely situated in a major global city distinguished by cultural diversity and a vibrant arts scene. Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre, the department’s primary purpose is to immerse students in practical work while familiarizing them with world theatre history, criticism, theory and analysis. All theatre studies are set against a liberal arts backdrop, which prepares students for healthy careers in the arts and beyond. Students learn their craft through multiple production opportunities in both performance and design. Our students are consistently recognized for the quality of their work with national fellowships from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival and the United States Institute for Theater Technology. The department is committed to enriching the lives of students and community members through the spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration in the teaching and practice of theatrical traditions and in the pursuit of new theatrical forms. We invite you to attend any of the performances highlighted in this program or visit carta.fiu.edu/theatre for a full program of performances. 2 3 FIU THEATRE | FALL 2019 FIU THEATRE | SPRING 2020 RIGHT YOU ARE, IF YOU THINK RED VELVET MEASURE FOR MEASURE THE MISS FIRECRACKER YOU ARE CONTEST November 15-24, 2019 January 31 – February 16, 2019 September 27 – October 6, 2019 April 10-19, 2020 By Lolita Chakrabarti By William Shakespeare By Luigi Pirandello Directed by Phillip M.
