Primary productivity is used in biology to refer to the aggregate photosynthetic production of the plant life of a particular region. Thanks to the rule of thermodynamics, most scientists have regarded the ability of plants to produce carbohydrates using carbon dioxide, water, and solar energy as foundational to all life throughout the twentieth century. Yet the history of the theory and methods used to quantify primary productivity is more complex than the straightforward and seemingly apolitical nature of the idea might initially suggest. -

Schüler und Kollegen können hier ihre freundschaftliche und wissenschaftliche Verbindung mit dem Jubilar zum Ausdruck bringen, und nicht selten wird aus der Art und Zahl der Beiträge auch sein eigenes wissenschaftliches Wir kungsfeld erkennbar. Beides ist in dieser Festschrift zu Ihrem 70. Geburtstag gelungen. Eine große Fülle von Beitragszusagen erlaubte die von vornherein geplante Aufteilung in einen mehr öko logisch und einen schwerpunktmäßig vegetationskundlichen Band. Als Beitrag der Floristisch-soziologischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft sind in unserem Band vorwiegend Arbeiten aufgenommen, die sich mit Flora und Vegetation der Erde in verschiedener Weise und Dimension befassen. Ohne direktes Zutun der Redaktion wird hier das weite Spektrum sichtbar, das Ihre Schüler, aufbauend auf den bei Ihnen erworbenen Grundlagen, in aller Welt bearbeiten. Die Spanne reicht von großräumiger Betrachtung der Vegetationszonen der Erde bis zu Kleinstrukturen der Pflanzendecke, von syn- taxonomischen Betrachtungen über die Erfassung dynamischer Vorgänge bis zu öko logischen Aspekten, von natürlichen Pflanzengesellschaften bis zu stark menschlich geprägten Beständen einschließlich der Fragen des Naturschutzes. Auch mehr methodische Beiträge und solche zur Datenverarbeitung fehlen nicht. -
In Memoriam Heinz Ellenberg (1913 – 1997)
C���� �� P���� ������� ��� ���������� �������� A������� ��� H����� I�������� ��� ����� �������� Georg August University Göttingen In memoriam Heinz Ellenberg (1913 – 1997) On August 1, 2013, Heinz Ellenberg would have been 100 years old. We use this anniversary to remember this pioneer of vegetation and plant ecology and recall his main achievements and contribution to the development of the discipline. Heinz Ellenberg shaped half a century of Central European vegetation ecology. The Ellenberg Indicator Values (Zeigerwerte) are well known to nearly every student of the discipline and are widely used in practical application. This little brochure reflects the main steps in Heinz Ellenberg’s scientific life and presents a selection of his most influential publications. Another intention of this hand-out is to inform about the recent research activities of the Chair for Plant Ecology and Ecosystems Research at Göttingen University, the chair Ellenberg filled from 1966 until 1981. The scientist’s life Heinz Ellenberg was born in 1913 in Hamburg-Harburg (northern Germany). After finishing school in Hannover, he moved to Montpellier in 1932 to study botany as well as zoology, chemistry and geology. He continued his studies at the universities of Heidelberg, Hannover and Göttingen and, in 1938, received a PhD in botany under the supervision of the paleobotanist Franz Firbas in Göttingen. In 1947, he joined the group of Heinrich Walter, plant ecologist and biogeographer, at the Botanical Institute of the Agricultural University in Stuttgart-Hohenheim, and was able to complete his ‘habilitation’ thesis in 1948. From 1953 to 1958, he was a Senior Lecturer at the Botanical Institute, University of Hamburg. In 1958, he became Full Professor of Geobotany at the Swiss Technical University Zürich (ETHZ). -

Mit ihm ist einer der größten Gelehrten unseres Jahrhunderts im Bereich der Vegetationsökologie von uns gegangen. Heinz Ellenberg war eines unserer ältesten Mitglieder und schon in der „Floristisch- soziologischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft in Niedersachsen“ vor dem 2. Weltkrieg aktiv. Obwohl aufgrund vieler anderer Verpflichtungen und Interessen die Bindungen später lockerer wur den, hat er 1971 ohne Zögern den Vorsitz unserer Arbeitsgemeinschaft übernommen, als unser langjähriger Präsident Reinhold Tüxen aus Altersgründen zurücktrat. Accordingly, explanations of the patterns have not yet been consolidated. In this paper, we comment on the solution of the “calcareous riddle” proposed by Jörg EWALD (Folia Geobot. 38: 357–366, 2003). On the basis of flora and vegetation data bases, we tested the phenomenon of calcicole richness by analyzing the forest vegetation and the flora of Switzerland and found corresponding patterns. A clear overbalance of calcareous forest habitats contrasts with an overbalance of acidic topsoils, as derived from a large representative sample in Swiss forests. Calcicole/calcifuge ratios reveal an overbalance of calcicoles in most mapping units of the distribution atlas of vascular plants in Switzerland. Central crystalline parts of the Alps, however, show a clear overbalance of calcifuges. Patterns from the different community and regional scales are explained by (micro-)habitat diversity. With respect to the “calcareous riddle”, we question several assumptions, e.g. the time considered before the Pleistocene bottleneck, the area considered for speciation/extinction, and the role of habitat diversity rather than two substrate classes.
