Our parish, under the amazing teamwork of the Stewardship Committee, has had the wonderful opportunity to host 3 Called & Gifted Workshops. There have been over 300 attend these workshops and many have experienced the one-on-one follow up interviews or participated in the small group discernment process. For many, their faith has been re-energized by this call to serve others. As your pastor, I hope and pray that you are continuing to discern your call as it relates to your possible charisms.

There is an opportunity being offered at the Diocese, September 29 & 30, for someone who would like training to be a Called & Gifted Interviewer. Being that we would like to foster this culture of ongoing formation in the Called and Gifted work at St. Timothy’s, it would be helpful if we had a team trained in the interview process.

I would ask those of you that have been through the Called and Gifted Workshop and possibly the interview process to pray and discern if this is something you may feel called to. If so please contact Katie Dawson, Director of Faith Formation at this web address: [email protected].

It happens every year, early in the month of August. First are the sinister newspaper ads. Then garish signs appear in store windows at the mall. “BACK TO SCHOOL” sales. As a kid, I hated it. Even when I was a young parent, I hated it. It still depresses me today. Maybe it’s because I remember those inevitable August trips to Sears or May Co when my Mom made me try on those long-sleeved shirts, scratchy sweaters and corduroy pants that made a woofing sound when you walked. Goodbye, summer; hello school. To be honest, I never really hated school once it started. What freaked me out (even later in high school, college and law school) was thinking about that first day of class. The problem was all in my head, of course, and going back to school was never that bad. How blessed I was to have the kind and patient Sisters of St. of Carondolet to guide me through it all the first time. God love them.

How sad it would be, however, if those of us who as kids had the benefit of a solid religious education never cracked open a book on spirituality when we became adults. If somehow our knowledge and experience of the presence of Christ in our lives and in our world never advanced beyond our eighth grade workbooks. If we do not fully grasp the meaning of passages of Sacred Scripture in the Mass because we never read the Bible for their context. If we are not fully aware of the divine revelations contained in the tradition of our Church. So much rich material is readily available in plain English: from the ancient writings of the to the pronouncements of Vatican II; from Teresa of Avila to and Thomas Merton. Check out the websites of publishers like Paulist Press and Orbis Books or go to nowyouknowmedia.com; and – easiest of all – stop at the Stewardship Committee’s book cart outside church on Sundays. Consider subscribing to a quality Catholic literary magazine like America or Commonweal. Let’s go back to school and try to become smarter, wiser and holier disciples of Jesus Christ. Free Phone Assistance for Hearing Impaired Tuesday, August 22, 2017, 10 am to 2 pm, St. Timothy Catholic Church, Church Hall California Phones will be at St. Timothy’s on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 to offer free hearing screenings and, if you qualify, one free specialized telephone or cell phone accessory. This event will be from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the church hall. Dixie Imada, Ph.D., is a member of our parish and is an audiologist. She will perform the hearing screenings and sign certification forms. Staff from California Phones will answer questions, demon- strate phones and give you a phone that day if you qualify. To qualify for the free phone you need to have at least a mild hearing loss, reside in California and have a landline. This event is open to all. Please tell your friends, relatives and neighbors who might have trouble communicating on the phone due to hearing loss. Usually, people have to go to the nearest Califor- nia Phone office to ceivere services, which is in Santa Ana. We are fortunate that they are willing to come to Laguna Niguel to help us. You must register for this event. Hearing screenings take about 15 minutes per person and demonstration/distribution of phones takes an additional 20 to 25 minutes.
