We at the USGA are thrilled to bring the 114th U.S. Open and the 69th U.S. Women’s Open to Pinehurst No. 2, which has had a remarkable legacy and unquestioned influence on the game. This year’s U.S. Open is the third to be contested on Pinehurst No. 2, all within the past 15 years, and it has also hosted two U.S. Amateurs, a U.S. Women’s Amateur, and a U.S. Senior Open. With this year’s U.S. Women’s Open, it will become the first course to have hosted all five of these prominent USGA championships. Pinehurst Resort was founded in 1895, the same year in which the USGA conducted its first national championships. Golf was introduced here three years later, and in 1900, Donald Ross was hired to direct golf operations, propelling a renowned course-design career whose crowning achievement is generally acknowledged to be Pinehurst No. 2. Ross nurtured and improved upon the course over the nearly five decades that he lived here, and the extensive work completed in 2011 by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw has restored Ross’ genius. The first U.S. Open at Pinehurst in 1999 provided one of the championship’s enduring moments, when Payne Stewart sank a par putt on the 72nd hole to edge Phil Mickelson by one stroke. In 2005, Michael Campbell of New Zealand defeated Tiger Woods by two strokes to become the first international qualifier to win the U.S. Open. Other USGA champions at Pinehurst are Labron Harris Jr. (1962 U.S. Amateur), Vicki Goetze (1989 U.S. Women’s Amateur), Simon Hobday of South Africa (1994 U.S. Senior Open) and Danny Lee of Korea (2008 U.S. Amateur). Pinehurst’s place in the game has long been assured, and it is poised to provide more memorable moments with these historic championships. We hope that you enjoy the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open, and we urge you to join us at another of our national championships this year. As always, thank you for your support of the USGA and our mission of honoring and giving back to the game of golf. Thomas J.
