Today we face myriad challenges. Unprecedented material and technological achievements co-exist with unconscionable and in some cases increasing poverty, inequality and injustice. Advances in science have unleashed remarkable powers, yet these very powers as presently wielded threaten to undermine the very future of our planet. Rapidly rising expectations have increased frustrations and tensions that threaten the fabric of global society. Prosperity itself has become a source of instability and destruction when wantonly pursued without organizational safeguards for our collective well-being. No longer able to afford the luxury of competition and strife based primarily on national, ethnic or religious interests and prejudices, we need urgently to acquire the knowledge and fashion the institutions required for free, fair and effective global governance. In recent centuries the world has been propelled by the battle cry of revolutionary ideas — freedom, equality, fraternity, universal education, workers of the world unite. Past revolutions have always brought vast upheaval and destruction in their wake, tumultuous and violent change that has torn societies asunder and precipitated devastating wars. Today the world needs evolutionary ideas that can spur our collective progress without the wake of destructive violence

It does not exceed the prescribed word limit of 80,000 words. ii ABSTRACT Bohdan Tokarskyi ‘A Fragment of Wholeness’: The Making of the Poetic Subject in Vasyl Stus’s Palimpsests My PhD thesis investigates the exploration of the self and the innovative poetical language in the works of the Ukrainian dissident poet and Gulag prisoner Vasyl Stus (1938-1985). Focusing on Stus’s magnum opus collection Palimpsests (1971-1979), where the poet casts the inhuman conditions of his incarceration to the periphery and instead engages in radical introspection, I show how Stus’s poetry foregrounds the very making of the subject as the constant pursuit of the authentic self. Through my examination of unpublished archival materials, analysis of Stus’s underexplored poems, and the contextualisation of the poet’s works within the tradition of the philosophy of becoming, I propose a new reading of Palimpsests, one that redirects scholarly attention from the historical and political to the psychological and philosophical.

All rights reserved. 2 Kelly Noel-Smith Freud on Time and Timelessness: the Ancient Greek Influence Abstract This thesis turns on two assumptions: first, that there is a current absence within the psychoanalytic library of a consolidated account of Freud's theories of time and timelessness; second, that there is compelling evidence of an influence by the ancient Greek canon on Freud's metapsychology of time. The thesis is that a detailed examination of this influence will bring additional clarity to our understanding of Freud’s thoughts about time and timelessness and permit the provision of the currently lacking systematic account of this part of his theory. The author brings the three components of the Greek canon most important to Freud - myth, tragedy and philosophy – into dialogue with psychoanalysis to show the importance of their influence on Freud's ideas on temporality.

While a knowledge of these myths is undoubtedly necessary to a clear understanding of much in literature and the arts, yet it is not for this reason alone that they have been selected; the myths that have appealed to the poets, the painters, and the sculptors for so many ages are the very ones that have the greatest depth of meaning, and that are the most beautiful and the best worth telling.

    Greek Mythology version 1.0 Notes: These are study questions on Apollodorus’ Library of Greek Mythology. They are best used during or after reading the Library, though many of them can be used independently. In some cases Apollodorus departs from other NJCL sources, and those other sources are more authoritative/likely to come up on tests and in Certamen. In particular, it is wise to read the epics (Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, Metamorphoses) for the canonical versions of several stories. Most of these are in question form, and suitable for use as certamen questions, but many of the later questions are in the format of NJCL test questions instead. Students should not be worried by the number of questions here, or the esoteric nature of some of them. Mastering every one of these questions is unnecessary except, perhaps, for those aiming to get a top score on the NJCL Mythology Exam, compete at the highest levels of Certamen, and the like. Further, many of the questions here are part of longer stories; learning a story will often help a student answer several of the questions at once. Apollodorus does an excellent job of presenting stories succinctly and clearly. The best translation of the Library currently available is probably the Oxford Word Classics edition by Robin Hard. That edition is also excellent for its notes, which include crucial information that Apollodorus omits as well as comparisons with other versions of the stories.
