PETER WAGNER AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR CHRISTIAN MISSION IN MALAWI ABSTRACT Strategic level spiritual warfare has been an emerging trend within Evangelical missiology ever since C. Peter Wagner published his Spiritual Power and Church Growth (1986). The distinctive doctrines of Wagner’s SLSW are 1. The doctrine of territorial spirits, which entails the belief that powerful demons control specific geographical territories and its human inhabitants. Through a variety of spiritual warfare techniques such demons can be overcome. 2. The doctrine of territorial defilement. The assumption here is that a territorial spirit can only hold people in a location in bondage if it has obtained the legal right to do so because of sins and evils committed in that locality in the past. Identificational repentance on behalf of the people living in such territories removes the legal right of the territorial spirits. 3. The doctrine of Strategic Level Spiritual Warfare prayer. The underlying assumption is that territorial spirits can only be removed by means of aggressive spiritual warfare in the form of a variety of prayer and exorcism methods for dealing with territorial spirits. (4) The doctrine of territorial commitment. This doctrine justifies the exercise of spiritual power and authority by modern apostles in their communities. Wagner’s missiology has been largely shaped by the church growth movement. In his quest for better techniques to bring about mass conversions Wagner, impressed by the Latin American Pentecostal churches, embraced Pentecostalism and developed SLSW. However, a thorough biblical study demonstrates that SLSW is mostly unbiblical. A study of SLSW in Church history also demonstrates that SLSW was never accepted in orthodox Christianity. From a contextual point of view SLSW turns out to be a North American missiology with nationalist and political biases. Finally, when looking at the potential effects of a SLSW style missiology in the context of Malawi it emerges that Wagner’s SLSW is likely to reinforce rather than diminish the prevalent witchcraft fears in the Malawian society. At the same time SLSW tends to ‘demonize’ other cultures and thus hinders genuine contextualization. In the final analysis SLSW turns out not to be a commendable strategy for Christian Mission in Malawi. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Richard Niebuhr’s classic study, Christ and Culture,2 those advocating a transformationist approach to cultural issues have often claimed John Calvin as one of their own. Although the term trans- formation is somewhat ambiguous, capable of various permutations, the idea behind it suggests a conviction not only that Christians ought to adopt a posi- tive stance toward cultural engagement but also that they should aim to bring the effects of God’s redemptive work in Christ to bear upon the various spheres of culture.3 Although thinkers of other theological persuasions have flocked to embrace one or another version of the transformationist paradigm, Reformed theologians of late have claimed transformationism as the Reformed approach to culture and even as a chief characteristic of Reformed Christianity alto- gether. Many of these contemporary Reformed theologians find inspiring precedent in the labors of the great Dutch theologian, journalist, and states- man Abraham Kuyper, who sought to infuse the various spheres of life with the claims of Christ. Beyond Kuyper, many Reformed theologians look back to Calvin himself and, with Niebuhr, find a representative of the transformation- ist vision.4 Is such a characterization of Calvin helpful and accurate? This suggests that possession is a cultural artefact, either in the strong sense of being nothing more than a cultural creation or in the weaker one of culture moulding and shaping universal psychological processes in socially relevant ways. My own approach to understanding possession lies very much within the framework of the weaker version. The hypothesis I will seek to develop is essentially that the phenomena of possession are best understood in terms of the psychological processes associated with the term ‘trance’. I use this term deliberately and in full awareness of the reservations about its usefulness expressed by some psychologists. Among hypnosis researchers there are three broad approaches to explaining the nature of trance. The first is that which emphasises socio-cognitive factors such as role play and imaginative involvement in suggested experiences. In short, this approach explains away any feature of trance which provides it with a distinctive character. This view would be compatible with what I have called the strong version of cultural artifactualism. Another approach emphasizes that trance is a genuine altered state of consciousness which differs from ordinary consciousness in a variety of ways, most notably in that reflexive, executive or ego consciousness – what many hypnotists call ‘the conscious mind’ – is dissociated from unconscious processes. The third approach is more diffuse, combining the first two explanations and, depending on the writer, perhaps adding a few other elements to produce a kind of multi-variable theory.

    CHAPTER ONE: GENERAL INTRODUCTION This chapter endeavours to put into context the background to the research. It illuminates the statement of the problem, purpose of the study, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, operational definitions, delimitations and limitations of the study. This study examined the variety of Islam found in Chibombo District, particularly Liteta area. It identified the types of people converting to Islam, established the reasons for conversion to Islam and the extent of Islamisation in Chibombo. This dissertation consists of six chapters. The first chapter introduces the study by providing background information to the investigation, stating the problem under investigation and giving the rationale for the study. Furthermore, the chapter outlines the purpose and objectives of the study, the specific research questions addressed, and the research limitations as well as the delimitation. The second chapter reviews some of the available literature that is considered to be of relevance to this study in order to place the investigation within the larger context of conversion in Africa. The third chapter describes the methodology used to collect data in order to provide answers to the questions raised in chapter one of the study. It includes a brief summary of the methodological framework employed in data collection and analysis, the details relating to the research paradigm and research design employed in the study, the population and sample size, sampling techniques, the data collection instruments and procedures, data analysis, and reflections on ethical issues. The fourth chapter presents the research findings under headings in line with the objectives and research questions.

    CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE CHRISTIAN MEDIA Christian press and media can be understood in diff erent ways. ereTh are internal publications in the churches, directed to the community of the faithful. Th ere are publications with mainly a Christian content, directed to a broader public than only the church community. Finally there are media-companies run by Christians, who want to off er a contribution to the general public. At the beginning of this chapter we will give a short overview of the Protestant and Catholic press in Indonesia starting in the seventeenth century. In a second part we will describe in short the history of Catholic publishers. We will take the history of the Catholic publisher and printer Kanisius as an example, and give in comparison a short description of the biggest Protestant Publisher in Indonesia, BPK Gunung Mulia. In the third part we will give some attention to an ecumenical project named Kokosia, a project that tried to make an inventory of the Christian activities in the fi eld of communication in Indonesia between 1978 and 1986. In the last part of this chapter we will describe how the newspaper Kompas, started by Catholics in 1965 as a “daily newspaper” and as a “views paper,” continues to the present to give a peaceful but also a critical contribution to the developments in Indonesian society. We end with a few notes about Sinar Harapan, later renamed Suara Pembaruan, a newspaper started by Protestants in Indonesia.
