PRIME DISPATCH EDITION 277 – 01/09/2020 Compiled by Joe o’NeILL Zizzis has retired and will go to the 2019 Everest winner Yes Yes Yes!!! The mating should produce a ¾ to Rubisaki!!! It certainly has been a tough year for many Australians. I’m fortunate it has been pretty much business as usual for us. The new season started strongly with a couple of winners. We should have a reasonable number of runners during the Spring with the number of runners increasing as we get closer to Christmas. We are indebted to the staffs at each of the racing jurisdictions for keeping racing going during the past few months when many industries have been closed or operating at low levels. I was keen to find out the numbers of mares being bred for the coming season. The feeling I got while I was in the Hunter Valley was the numbers are good although some of the lower end sires were struggling a bit. The situation in many of the smaller states isn’t as good with many smaller or hobby breeders holding back. We purchase most of our yearlings from the NSW studs so the lesser numbers being bred across the country shouldn’t have a big effect on us. I picked up quite a bit of information while I was in the Hunter. The breeders in this region really have their fingers on the pulse and pick up trends earlier than most. I suppose that is why 18 of the top 20 sires on the Australian General Sires List for last season either stood in NSW or will stand there for the coming season.

  • Simple Verse Back to Winning Ways at Donny
FRIDAY, 9 SEPTEMBER, 2016 HANDICAPPING AUSSIE FRESHMEN SIRES SIMPLE VERSE BACK TO By James Harron Bloodstock WINNING WAYS AT DONNY As the Spring racing gets into full swing, the first barrier trials for the just-turned 2-year-olds are just around the corner and the first races not far behind that. Probably not the most liquid of betting markets, but an interesting one nevertheless, is that to select which of the first-season stallions will be top of the pile by prizemoney come the end of the season next August. A wager on this particular market last season really would have given punters the proverbial run for their money, with just $400 the margin of victory for Arrowfield Stud's Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock), ahead of Sun Stud's Love Conquers All (Mossman). This column takes a look at some of the leading contenders this year, including Pierro (Lonhro), All Too Hard (Casino Prince), Your Song (Fastnet Rock), Delago Deluxe (Encosta de Lago) and Ocean Park (Thorn Park). • WS Stallions Ocean Park and O'reilly Were the Stars of the Show at The
WS stallions Ocean Park and O’Reilly were the stars of the show at the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Awards in Hamilton last night. Ocean Park was crowned Horse of the Year with 44 votes out of a possible 46 and was also awarded the Champion Middle Distance title. The Gary Hennessy-trained 4YO was the dominant spring performer, stringing together four successive Group One victories. Raced by Hennessy in conjunction with Andrew Wong and Stephen Yan of Hong Kong, the son of Thorn Park resumed with a win in the Makfi Challenge Stakes at Hastings and continued his winning way in Melbourne, where he added the Underwood Stakes and Caulfield Stakes before downing Australia’s star three-year-old pair All Too Hard and Pierro in the Cox Plate. He returned to racing in late summer and took his Group One tally to five with victory in the New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie. Stud star O’Reilly, on the other hand, claimed an unprecedented clean sweep of the stallion awards, successfully taking out New Zealand’s Dewar, Grosvenor and Centaine Awards. Adding extra lustre to the night, the stud’s exciting young Gr.1 sire Savabeel was strongly distinguished by son Sangster, who took out the Champion Stayer award following Gr.1 wins in the Auckland Cup and the Waikato International Stakes. This week we put 60 seconds of curious questions to Gary Hennessy, trainer of the NZ Horse of the Year, Ocean Park. Favourite comfort food: Roast lamb Favourite thoroughbred (s): Ocean Park and Kingston Town Book on the bedside table Henry Cecil Favourite TV show: Mrs Brown’s Boys Concert you’d like to go to: The Corrs If you weren’t in racing, you’d be a: Rocket scientist…probably farming.
