PRIME DISPATCH EDITION 277 – 01/09/2020 Compiled by Joe o’NeILL Zizzis has retired and will go to the 2019 Everest winner Yes Yes Yes!!! The mating should produce a ¾ to Rubisaki!!! It certainly has been a tough year for many Australians. I’m fortunate it has been pretty much business as usual for us. The new season started strongly with a couple of winners. We should have a reasonable number of runners during the Spring with the number of runners increasing as we get closer to Christmas. We are indebted to the staffs at each of the racing jurisdictions for keeping racing going during the past few months when many industries have been closed or operating at low levels. I was keen to find out the numbers of mares being bred for the coming season. The feeling I got while I was in the Hunter Valley was the numbers are good although some of the lower end sires were struggling a bit. The situation in many of the smaller states isn’t as good with many smaller or hobby breeders holding back. We purchase most of our yearlings from the NSW studs so the lesser numbers being bred across the country shouldn’t have a big effect on us. I picked up quite a bit of information while I was in the Hunter. The breeders in this region really have their fingers on the pulse and pick up trends earlier than most. I suppose that is why 18 of the top 20 sires on the Australian General Sires List for last season either stood in NSW or will stand there for the coming season.

  • High Horses Horses, Class and Socio-Economic Change in South Africa1
Chapter 7 ❈ High Horses Horses, Class and Socio-economic Change in South Africa1 ‘Things are in the Saddle and ride mankind.’ 2 n the first half of the twentieth century there was a seismic shift in the Irelationship between horses and humans in commercial South Africa as ‘horsepower’ stopped implying equine military-agricultural potential and came to mean 746 watts of power.3 By the 1940s the South African horse industry faced a crisis. There was an over-production of horses, exacerbated by restrictions imposed by the Second World War, which rendered export to international markets difficult.4 Farm mechanisation was proceeding apace and vehicle numbers were doubling every decade.5 As the previous chapter has shown, there were doomed attempts to slow the relentless mechanisation of state transport. As late as 1949 the Horse and Mule Breeders Association issued a desperate appeal to the minister of railways and transport to stall mechanisation and use animal transport wherever possible.6 Futile efforts were made to reorientate the industry towards slaughtering horses for ‘native consumption’ or sending chilled equine meat to Belgium.7 Remount Services had been transferred to the Department of Agriculture, a significant bureaucratic step reflecting the final acknowledgement of equine superfluity to the modern military. As the previous chapter discussed, the so-called ‘Cinderella of the livestock industry’ had to reinvent itself to survive.8 A new breed of horses thus entered the landscape of the platteland: the American Saddlebred.9 Unlike the horses that had preceded them, these creatures were show horses. The breed was noted for its showy action in all Riding High 07.indd 171 2010/05/31 12:04 PM Riding High paces, its swanlike neck with ‘aristocratic arch’ and its uplifted tail.

  • RARE LINE of the GIFFORD FAMILY Few of the Old Morgan Families Evoke the Imagery of the Golddust Line
u HISTORY LESSON u RARE LINE OF THE GIFFORD FAMILY Few of the old Morgan families evoke the imagery of the Golddust line. The thread is rare, yet interwoven through many Morgan families of all disciplines, and still prized by many breeders today. The Golddust story offers a fascinating look at some unique early history of the breed and contribution and dedication of the Dorsey and Hornsby familiesGolddust in building up a pure strain of the Golddust line for many decades. By Brenda L. Tippin GOLDDUST—BREEDING AND BACKGROUND his son Vermont Morgan at the Windsor County Fair in Vermont Foaled in 1855 at the famous Eden Stock Farm in Louisville, in 1848 where he won first premium for mature stallions, and Jefferson County, Kentucky, Golddust was something of a legend in Vermont Morgan won first premium for two-year-old stallions. his time. One of the three original counties of Kentucky, Jefferson Barnard Morgan also won first premium at the Madison County County was formed in 1780 and named in honor of Thomas Fair, Illinois in 1855; and the St. Louis Missouri Fair of 1857, Jefferson who was then governor of the state.
