The unique male holotype of this monotypic genus of bees was collected 80 years ago and ofcially gazeted as presumed extnct in 1994. With our collecton of a female specimen in 2015, however, it now appears that H. douglasi may persist as an extant localised populaton. Follow-up eforts to fnd more specimens at the collecton locality so far proved unsuccessful, indicatng that the species is likely either very rare or inhabits an ecological niche that is yet to be discovered. Analysis of the pollen load carried by the female indicates that the species may be polylectc. We discuss the context of the rediscovery of the bee, provide a detailed descripton and illustratons of the female, and make observatons about the unusual morphological characteristcs of the species. The rediscovery of H. douglasi emphasizes the importance of conservaton eforts for remnant woodlands in the region, both as potental habitat for the bee and as remaining habitat essental for other rare and threatened species in this global biodiversity hotspot.     PHYLOGENETIC SYSTEMATICS OF SCRAPTER (HYMENOPTERA: ANTHOPHILA: COLLETIDAE) GREGORY BERNARD PETER DAVIES Submitted as the dissertation component in partial fulfilment ofthe requirements for the degree ofMaster ofScience in the Discipline ofEntomology, School ofBiological and Conservation Sciences, University ofKwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg, 2006 ii ABSTRACT Scrapter Lepeletier de Saint-Fargeau & Audinet-Serville, 1828 (Hymenoptera: Aculeatea: Anthophila: Colletidae) is a genus of solitary bees largely endemic to southern Africa. This dissertation investigated the phylogenetic systematics of the genus. Eleven new species of Scrapter are described, principally from the Succulent Karoo biome of South Africa, bringing the total number of species in the genus to 42. An updated dichotomous key to facilitate identification is provided. The previously unknown females of S. albifumus Eardley and S. amplispinatus Eardley are also described. The genus is recorded from outside southern Africa for the first time with the collection of S. nitidus (Friese) in Kenya. This constitutes a significant range extension of the genus. The taxonomic status of five species described by Cockerell in 1944, and subsequently overlooked, is addressed. They are all found to be synonyms ofother Scrapter species, except one, which is found to be a Ctenoplectrina species (Apidae: Apinae: Ctenoplectrini). The new synonymies are: S. subincertus Cockerell = S. niger Lepeletier de Saint-Fargeau & Audinet-Serville; S. brunneipennis Cockerell = S. niger Lepeletier de Saint-Fargeau & Audinet-Serville; S. merescens Cockerell = S. leonis Cockerell; S. sinophilus Cockerell = S. algoensis (Friese). Scrapter ugandica Cockerell becomes Ctenoplectrina ugandica (Cockerell) as a new combination. Investigation of selected morphological features (e.g. postmentum, facial fovea, galea) revealed much diversity in Scrapter.
