He is a graduate of Wake Forest University and Bethlehem College & Seminary. He lives in Minneapolis and is a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. INTRODUCTION MARSHALL SEGAL His wife was gone. Sure, last night looked like a lot of nights recently. She’d walked out many times before, but this was different. Te abandonment, the adultery, and the deception had mounted a massive assault on their marriage and family. Had it been three men in just six months? He feared there were more. Again and again, she’d wrecked the family’s affairs with her own. She had spent and overspent the family budget to please another guy—another illicit, irrational, imaginary love. Teir marriage, once sweet, had become a nightmare. Tose first days, maybe even months, of marital bliss felt so distant and unfamiliar. It was hard for her husband to believe they were ever even real. Two children—a son and a daugh- ter—were the real victims, loved by dad, but left by mom. Tey were conceived and raised in despair and misery. Teir dad had always hoped things would change. He even prom- ised that things would be different, that the loneliness and betrayal they’d known their whole lives would be turned for good—for hope, belonging, and love. Not knowing what to say to his confused and wounded children that night, dad knelt down between their beds, and he prayed: God, please rescue my bride—the mother of my precious children—from this destructive, suicidal path. She’s left us for other lovers, believing that with them she’ll find the protection and affection she craves. For as long as she runs from the promises we made and the family VI INTRODUCTION we’ve built together, graciously cause her to be unsatis- fied, empty, and lonely. Maybe then, in her despair and need, she will remember us, return to our family, and be Wife and Mom again. If she would only come home, I would welcome her into my arms and heart as if it were our wedding day. I would love her as if we never lost her. Bring her home, for the sake of your Name, Amen. (Hosea 2:5–7) Several years later, on a hot afternoon in August, the husband was walking downtown through a local park. His oldest, a teenager now, had left an assignment on the kitchen table, so he was dropping it off at school. He could walk from his of- fice, and usually even enjoyed the break and exercise, but it was uncomfortable today. Temperatures had soared to record highs, leaving most people hiding inside until evening. He saw a woman, though—the only soul he’d seen since he left work. She was exhausted, disheveled, and desperate. She was squeezing every last drop out of a public drinking fountain, clinging to it like she might drown if she let go. As he walked closer, he started to make out her face. “Hannah? . is that you?” He looked into her eyes and saw the face he knew so well, the woman who had hurt him so deeply. She was still his wife. She looked around uncom- fortably, as if she was waiting for someone else to walk by and discover her shame. She had left so much for so very little. She left the provision, safety, and intimacy of a truly good man for a treadmill of temporary pleasure and terrible, destructive life choices. Te other men always seemed so attractive, but they never truly loved her, and the relationships never lasted. “Why are you out here, Hannah?” “I have nowhere else to go, and I had to get away from him. I’m tired, and scared, and thirsty.” INTRODUCTION VII “Come home, Hannah. You know I will take care of you—whatever you need. I’ll provide for you and protect you. You’ll never be thirsty again.” After several hard, awkward, silent moments, she fi- nally looked back up at him, feeling lost, embarrassed, and ashamed. He was smiling. It wasn’t the cute, naïve, playful smile she saw on their first dates together. No, it had been replaced with something deeper, more refined, and durable. “I love you,” he said. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing, what she was hearing. “But you don’t know what I’ve done. where I’ve been.” “No, I do. I know about the men. I know about the one at your apartment right now, and the six that came before him. I know each of their names, Hannah. Come home.” “No, you don’t understand. I’m not worthy of you any- more.” “Hannah, I never loved you because you were worthy. I loved you because you were mine. And even though you ran away and gave yourself to other men, ‘I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice.’ Even though you walked away from our love and our family, ‘I will betroth you to me in steadfast love and in mercy.’ Even though you defiled our covenant and failed to fulfill your promises, ‘I will betroth you to me in faithfulness.’” MANKIND’S SEVEN MISTRESSES “. And you shall know me, the Lord” (Hosea 2:19–20). We are Hannah, each one of us. Te names of our seven affairs are Pride, Envy, Anger, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust. And the betrayed, but faithful husband is Jesus—our first love, our lost love, our new love. Undoubtedly there are sins besides these or other ways for naming them, but the seven deadly sins have been some VIII INTRODUCTION of the most promiscuous and prevalent in history. Tey form a brothel of mistresses who are all at once familiar and un- familiar. Tey’re familiar because every man or woman has tasted them—either for a one-night stand or in a life-long af- fair.

This Book Brings Clarity to Spiritual Weaponry to Fend Off EvilBy TJ BurdickIn this book, Dr. Vost takes his expertise of the human mind and unites it with the timeless truths of Thomas Aquinas’ work in order to help the reader form a psychological army to battle against sin. By pitting vice against virtue, he joins faith and reason to do war against evil on the battlefields of both the mind and the soul.“Although I am certainly unable to advise anyone from the perspective of one who has conquered these sins himself, I do stand ready to point you to the strategies and arm you with some of the weapons that great saints have devised to assist us in our relentless struggles against sin, toward virtue, and ultimately, toward union with God” (p.83).The first part of the book goes back to the early Church and creates a symmetrical consensus of just what the deadly sins are. Vost’s research of the historical and etymological interpretations of the names for each of the seven deadly, or capital, sins is exhaustive and complete. He then dissects each of the seven deadly sins with the literary scalpel of what St.

  • The Song Elite's Obsession with Death, the Underworld, and Salvation
BIBLID 0254-4466(2002)20:1 pp. 399-440 漢學研究第 20 卷第 1 期(民國 91 年 6 月) Visualizing the Afterlife: The Song Elite’s Obsession with Death, the Underworld, and Salvation Hsien-huei Liao* Abstract This study explores the Song elite’s obsession with the afterlife and its impact on their daily lives. Through examining the ways they perceived the relations between the living and the dead, the fate of their own afterlives, and the functional roles of religious specialists, this study demonstrates that the prevailing ideas about death and the afterlife infiltrated the minds of many of the educated, deeply affecting their daily practices. While affected by contem- porary belief in the underworld and the power of the dead, the Song elite also played an important role in the formation and proliferation of those ideas through their piety and practices. Still, implicit divergences of perceptions and practices between the elite and the populace remained abiding features under- neath their universally shared beliefs. To explore the Song elite’s interactions with popular belief in the underworld, several questions are discussed, such as how and why the folk belief in the afterlife were accepted and incorporated into the elite’s own practices, and how their practices corresponded to, dif- fered from, or reinforced folk beliefs. An examination of the social, cultural, * Hsien-huei Liao is a research associate in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University, U.S.A. 399 400 漢學研究第20卷第1期 and political impact on their conceptualization of the afterlife within the broad historical context of the Song is key to understand their beliefs and practices concerning the underworld.

RUSSIAN ORTHODOXY AND WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY IN IMPERIAL RUSSIA* Christine D. Worobec On 8 November 1885, the feast day of Archangel Michael, the Abbess Taisiia had a mystical experience in the midst of a church service dedicated to the tonsuring of sisters at Leushino. The women’s religious community of Leushino had recently been ele vated to the status of a monastery.1 Conducting an all-women’s choir on that special day, the abbess became exhilarated by the beautiful refrain of the Cherubikon hymn, “Let us lay aside all earthly cares,” and envisioned Christ surrounded by angels above the iconostasis. She later wrote, “Something was happening, but what it was I am unable to tell, although I saw and heard every thing. It was not something of this world. From the beginning of the vision, I seemed to fall into ecstatic rapture Tears were stream ing down my face. Television Sharknados and Twitter Storms: Cult Film Fan Practices in the Age of Social Media Branding Stephen William Hay A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the regulations for the degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the Syfy channel’s broadcast of the television movie Sharknado and the large number of tweets that were sent about it. Sharknado’s audience engaged in cult film viewing practices that can be understood using paracinema theory. Paracinema engagement with cult films has traditionally taken place in midnight screenings in independent movie theatres and private homes. Syfy’s audience was able to engage in paracinematic activity that included making jokes about Sharknado’s low quality of production and interacting with others who were doing the same through the affordances of Twitter. In an age where branding has become increasingly important, Syfy clearly benefited from all the fan activity around its programming. Critical branding theory argues that the value generated by a business’s brand comes from the labour of consumers. Brand management is mostly about encouraging and managing consumer labour. The online shift of fan practices has created new opportunities for brand managers to subsume the activities of consumers. Cult film audience practices often have an emphasis on creatively and collectively engaging in rituals and activities around a text. These are the precise qualities that brands require from their consumers. Sharknado was produced and marketed by Syfy to invoke the cult film subculture as part of Syfy’s branding strategy.

Abstract: After the fall of Jerusalem in 1187, Acre became the formal capital of the Crusader Kingdom. During the 13th century, it became a pilgrimage site for many Christian pilgrims, who enriched the city with their religious ceremonies. Such as a procession called the Pardon d'Acre, which contributed greatly to our understanding of the religious places and military compounds in Frankish Acre. In this essay, I link the religious ceremonies that took place in Acre with the passages among the locations mentioned therein. All these contributed to the revival of the historical and religious space in medieval Acre.

IOO INTRODUCTION HE business of literature is the presentation Tof life, all true literature resolves itself into that. No presentation of life is complete without its sins, and every master of literary art has known it, from the poet King of Israel to Robert Browning. The imagination of the Middle Ages, in many ways more virile and expansive than our own, had a strong grasp of this fact, and realised that it is the sense of fault or error that lies at the root of every forward movement, that there is no real progress unless it is accompanied by a sense of sin.

  • Apocalypse As Religious and Secular Discourse in Battlestar Galactica
Volume 6 2014-15 APOCALYPSE & GHOSTS Apocalypse as Religious and Secular Discourse in Battlestar Galactica and its Prequel Caprica Diane Langlumé University of Paris VIII Saint-Denis Abstract he concept of the end of the world is inherent in religious discourse. Illustratively, in T Medieval Christianity, a divine power was held responsible for cataclysmic events. In the post-Hiroshima era, the concept of apocalypse has taken on secular meaning. Not surprisingly, given recent history, the apocalypse has become a prominent component of popular television epics; broadcast narratives, such as Battlestar Galactica and Caprica, entwine both Biblical and secular versions of the apocalypse, thereby creating a novel apocalyptic discourse which, instead of establishing the apocalypse as an end, uses it as a foundation, as a thought-provoking means of conveying a political message of tolerance and acceptance of otherness, of encouraging self-reflectiveness; and as a way of denouncing the empty rhetoric of religious extremism. Keywords: Television series, Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, religion, Book of Mormon, Bible, Book of Revelation, John of Patmos, Genesis, Adam, Garden of Eden, Heaven, God, fall of man, the beast, false prophet, angel, Second Coming, resuscitation, apocalypse, end of the world, nuclear apocalypse, Hiroshima, post-apocalyptic, genocide, intertextuality, parody, pastiche, religious satire, 9/11, America, religious terrorism, suicide bombing, cyborg, robot, humanity, monotheism, polytheism. he television series Battlestar Galactica1 establishes its chronology between a nuclear T apocalypse that has just taken place and the threat of a potential future apocalypse,2 both at the hands of human-looking cyborgs called Cylons. Caprica, its prequel series, set fifty- eight years before the nuclear detonation, unfolds the events leading up to the apocalypse in Battlestar Galactica.
