HIKING SAFETY TIPS Ticks are plentiful this time of year and some of them carry disease. Check your clothing and exposed skin after hiking. Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes make the mountains their home. Stay away from them and they won't bother you. In case of rattlesnake bite DO NOT make an incision or try to draw out venom. Splint the extremity and Iransporl to an emergency room. Wear sturdy footwear—hiking boots or sneakers with good tread. Poison oak can be identified by its clusters ot three shiny leaflets. The best way to avoid it is to stay on trails. Never hike alone, use the buddy system. That leaves someone to go for help if you encounter trouble. Help prevent wildfires. Do not smoke on the trail or in brush areas. Do not build lires on the ground. Carry plenty of water and drink it. One quart tor short walks, more lor longer hikes.

The National Park Service has an Infor mation Center in its headquarters at 22900 Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills. The Information Center staff can answer questions about parks and pro grams in the Santa Monica Mountains, as well as on national parks throughout the United States. They know all about lodg ing reservations, backcountry permits and Golden passports. They are linked with the Ticketron Reservation System for campgrounds in Yosemite, Sequoia and the Grand Canyon National Parks.

While you are in the Information Center, browse through the publication sales area. You'll find books for the whole family about national parks, native Americans and natural history. You can also pur chase topographic maps for any part of the Santa Monica Mountains. All sales support educational programs in the rec reation area.

The Information Center is open Monday through Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The telephone number is (818) 888-3770. For a taped park information message or road and weather conditions in major western national parks, call (818) 710-9488 any time.
