We Will Rock You”
“We Will Rock You” By Queen and Ben Elton At the Hippodrome Theatre through October 20 By Princess Appau WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS When one walks into the Hippodrome Theatre to view “We Will Rock You,” the common expectation is a compilation of classic rock and roll music held together by a simple plot. This jukebox musical, however, surpasses those expectations by entwining a powerful plot with clever updating of the original 2002 musical by Queen and Ben Elton. The playwright Elton has surrounded Queen’s songs with a plot that highlights the familiar conflict of our era: youths being sycophants to technology. This comic method is not only the key to the show’s success but also the antidote to any fear that the future could become this. The futuristic storyline is connected to many of Queen’s lyrics that foreshadow the youthful infatuation with technology and the monotonous lifestyle that results. This approach is emphasized by the use of a projector displaying programmed visuals of a futuristic setting throughout the show. The opening scene transitions into the Queen song “Radio Gaga,” which further affirms this theme. The scene includes a large projection of hundreds of youth, clones to the cast performing on stage. The human cast and virtual cast are clothed alike in identical white tops and shorts or skirts; they sing and dance in sublime unison, defining the setting of the show and foreshadowing the plot. Unlike most jukebox musicals the plot is not a biographical story of the performers whose music is featured. “We Will Rock You” is set 300 years in the future on the iPlanet when individuality and creativity are shunned and conformity reigns. -

This Is Heavy Metal: Spinal Tap Und Ihre Beziehung Zur (Medialen) Realität Des Metals

“The Greatest Gift Is the Realization That Life Does Not Consist Either In
“The greatest gift is the realization that life does not consist either in wallowing in the past or peering anxiously into the future; and it is appalling to contemplate the great number of often painful steps by which ones arrives at a truth so old, so obvious, and so frequently expressed. It is good for one to appreciate that life is now. Whatever it offers, little or much, life is now –this day-this hour.” Charles Macomb Flandrau Ernest Hemingway drank here. Cuban revolutionaries Fidel Castro and Che Guevera drank here. A longhaired young hippie musician named Jimmy Buffett drank and performed here, too. From the 1930’s through today this rustic dive bar has seen more than its share of the famous and the infamous. It’s a little joint called Capt. Tony’s in Key West, Florida. Eighty-seven-year-old Anthony ‘Capt. Tony’ Tarracino has been the owner and proprietor of this boozy establishment since 1959. It seems Tony, as a young mobster, got himself into some serious trouble with ‘the family’ back in New Jersey and needed to lay low for a while. In those days, the mosquito invested ‘keys’ (or islands) on the southernmost end of Florida’s coastline was a fine place for wise guys on the lam to hide out. And this was well before the tee-shirt shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, charming B&B’s and quaint hotels turned Key West into a serious year-round tourist destination. Sure, there were some ‘artsy’ types like Hemingway and Tennessee Williams living in Key West during the late 50’s when Tony bought the bar, but it was a seaside shanty town where muscular hard-working men in shrimp boats and cutters fished all day for a living. -

Lush - Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson on 1996 Album “Lovelife” and the Last Days of the Band undertheradarmag.com /interviews/lush_- _miki_berenyi_and_emma_anderson_on_1996_album_lovelife_and_the_last_d/ "Lush was so tied up with Chris, and without him, it's just really, really difficult to consider [a reunion]." - Miki Berenyi Apr 28, 2015 By Frank Valish Issue #51 - September/October 2014 - alt-J The year was 1996. Lush had released its third full-length album, Lovelife. Although their shoegaze-crossed-with- pop songwriting never truly fit into Britain's chart-centric musical atmosphere, the band was finally getting its due, with Lovelife cracking the Top 10 on Britain's album charts and spawning three charting singles, "Single Girl," "Ladykiller," and "500 (Shake Baby Shake)." The band was in demand for concerts across the U.S. and Europe. On the surface, it seemed like things couldn't get any better. But within a year, it would all be over. 1/4 Lush formed in London in 1988, fronted by school friends Emma Anderson (guitars/vocals) and Miki Berenyi (vocals/guitars), along with Chris Acland (drums) and Steve Rippon (bass). After releasing a series of EPs that garnered Lush attention in the U.K., including 1990 cover stories for both Melody Maker and NME, Rippon left and was replaced by Philip King just prior to the release of the band's full-length debut. Spooky, released in 1992, was an album that showcased the dream-pop soundscapes and ethereal melodies of the band's two frontwomen and propelled Lush to recognition in America with a gig on 1992's Lollapalooza festival. -
Lush: Shoegaze, Blind Spot and Reunions
Lush: Shoegaze, Blind Spot and Reunions theskinny.co.uk /music/interviews/lush-interview Lush Editor's Choice "You know, I hate the term shoegazing." Emma Anderson laughs but she's frustrated rather than amused as she reflects on the continuing and uncomfortable packaging of the scene her band Lush helped kick-start a mere quarter century ago. That time might have flown but the lazy compartmentalising has remained. "The scene was ridiculed to some extent," she continues, "but if you go back to the 90s, a lot of stuff hasn’t stood the test of time very well at all, and I can see why this has. It has a slightly other-worldly quality, I guess. It's very musical. That might sound really silly but it's not lyric-driven, it's certainly not scene-driven. It's based in music and genuine, real emotion." Hear hear. And her band's lasting qualities go some considerable way towards explaining why their unexpected regrouping late last year was greeted with such immediate warmth. With the likes of Ride and Slowdive's returns leading to a thoughtful re-evaluation of their back catalogues, Lush begin again with their credibility secure, despite elements of a largely supportive press at the time throwing them the odd bitchy barb. As we talk by phone ahead of the band's first release in 20 years – the tremendous Blind Spot EP – and a run of live shows that include two headline performances at London's vast Roundhouse, Anderson recalls those slyly negative notices with bemusement. "This has come up quite a lot actually," she says. -
