The Invisible Journalist: Understanding the Role of the Documentary Filmmaker as Portrayed in The Office Massiel Bobadilla JOUR575 –Joe Saltzman Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture May 5, 2011 Bobadilla 2 ABSTRACT: This study aims to shed light on the enigmatic ‘mockumentary’ filmmaker of The Office by using specific examples from the show’s first six seasons to understand how the filmmaker is impacted by and impacts concepts of journalism and the invasion of privacy. Similarly, the filmmaker in the American version of The Office will not only be compared and contrasted to the role of the filmmaker in the British version, but also will be compared to the anthropologic ethnographer an “outsider” attempting to capture life as faithfully as possible in a community to which he/she does not belong. The American interpretation of The Office branched out of Ricky Gervais’s British original of the same name with the pilot episode hitting the airwaves on NBC on March 24, 2005,1 to largely mixed reviews from critics, but a strong showing among viewers.2 The show’s basic premise is that of a faux documentary providing an inside look at the day-to-day life of the employees of a mid-level paper company. The primary focus centers on the socially inept branch manager, his even more inept right-hand-man, and the budding romance of the young and earnest paper salesman and the mild-mannered receptionist who happens to be inconveniently engaged to one of the branch’s warehouse workers. July 15, 2004 5:39:00 AM/PDT (news embargo time) CONTACT: Robin Mesger at The Lippin Group (323/965-1990) 2003 – 2004 PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS NOMINATIONS Nominations for the 56th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards for the period of June 1, 2003 through May 31, 2004, were announced today (July 15) by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences from the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre, North Hollywood, California. The Academy’s Chairman of the Board & CEO Dick Askin presided, assisted by Edie Falco and Tony Shalhoub. The awards presentation telecast awarding Emmys in 28 categories before a black-tie audience will be televised by the ABC Television Network on Sunday, September 19, from the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium. The Academy's Governors Ball will follow the telecast at the Shrine Exhibition Hall, adjacent to the auditorium. This year's Emmy telecast will be hosted by Garry Shandling, executive-produced by Don Mischer and produced by Michael Seligman. Danette Herman is the coordinating producer. On Sunday, September 12, also at the Shrine Auditorium, 59 awards “categories” (a single award) and “areas” (possibility of one, more than one or no award) will be handed out at a black-tie presentation co-chaired by Michael Hoey and John Moffitt. Spike Jones, Jr. will produce. Additional awards may also be given for the three "juried areas" (no nominations) of Costumes for a Variety or Music Program, Voice-Over Performance and Individual Achievement in Animation. The announcement of these awards, if any, will be released in August. Additional awards may also be given for Engineering Development, Interactive Television Programming and the Governors Award. -
