over 100 companies represented \ J -OPINION • February 15. 1980 According to Matthew... by Matthew A. Mallet Editor Driving throughout the City a careful observer will occasionally notice billboards dressed in white on black stating "USF: San Francisco's First University". These signs, also seen in smaller form on MUNI buses, are part of a clever promotional campaign sponsored by USF's Office of Public Affairs. A main goal of their effort is to distinguish USF from other colleges in San Francisco, notably SFSU. I hope their undertaking is successful as I, for one, am tired of losing mail to the Gator's campus. But OPA's plan involves much more than putting up billboards. They have, for the most part, solidified the imagesof USF used in publications. They have advertised the University through local newspapers and The Wall Street Journal, western edition. All in all. OPA's drive to build USF's image has been underway for two years. This year OPA plans one of an even larger scale. They plan full page advertisements in regional editions of Time, Newsweek, Psychology Today, and a quarter page ad in The Wall Street Journal. Costs to the University for these advertisements will run, according to OPA Director Ron Brill, at about $10,000. This money will come out of OPA's $70,000 budget for the production of campus publications and institutional advertising. For this fiscal year (and after the recent budget cuts) OPA has $15,000 allocated for public events and $170,000 ($143,000 for personnel) alloted for operating expenses. From The Hip OPA hopes their efforts will distinguish USF's image and trad ition. The ads are also intended to draw in new students and to encourage potential and past donors. Brill estimates that bx James Attridge their ads will have a potential audience of one million people. He nineteen.
