1974 Mid Senior Hurling Champions

id Tipperary senior hurling history was made at Semple Stadiu m Thurles on M Sunday September 8th. 1974 when Drom-Inch won their fi rst ever title in the grade defeating Thurles Sarsficlds by 3-9 to 3-6 The victory was all the ~wceter as Dram-Inch got revenge for their narrow final defeat 10 Sar)'fields the previous year. The 1973 final was played in Templcmorc and Droll1-1nch made a gallant effort before narrowly losing by two points. 0-16 to 3-5 with cont ributing eleven points of his sides total. This was a vintage no nonsense display by Drorn-lnch and they contested every batl. especially in the final quarter as if their very life existence depended on it. Turning over 1-8 to 0-4 ahead. Drom-Inch were faced with a strong second half breele and it was generally felt that Sarsfields would eventually get their measure but a golden goal by Eamon Butler in the thiny third minute was the real turn ing point. Sarsfields now foun d themselves nine points down which in the end proved too much against such a great heaned force. Drums sideline mentors made some shrewd moves bringing John Kennedy ,md Pascal Ryan to the half forward line, Johnn y Harkin centre forward and above all the masterly swi tch of Eamon Butler to full forward where he gained in stature and command and appeared as if he got more of the sliothilr he was good for more scores. Eamon. one of the six Butler brothers on the Drom- Inch fifteen was one of their heroes but not flt r behind came Johnny Harkin. scorer of six points and an industrious worker and foTltger of the ball all through. John Dwyer in gO: 11 played a captains pan and gave inspiration often to hi s outfield colleagues. Larry Doheny at full back marked Jimmy Doyle like a hawk and took much of the ~ting out of the man who had donI! most for Thurtcs that year. John McGrath and Michael Costelloe wcre always c1o~e to thwart danger whil,t Seamus Butler was in command at centre back. At midl1eld the Butler, Tormn} and Paudie ruled the <;how for long 'pell~.
