  • Jamestown Gals Delights Full House at Musicalfare
Jamestown Gals Delights Full House at MusicalFare Jamestown Gals, a playful revue of the careers of Lucille Ball and Peggy Lee is the latest creative effort from veteran choreographer Michael Walline. The show is now playing at MusicalFare at Daemen College in Amherst. Kathy Weese and Kelly Jakiel played Lucille Ball in her various incarnations while Terrie George and Arin Lee Dandes appeared as Peggy Lee. John Fredo and Marc Sacco played Desi Arnaz and most any other male roles called for. Walline cast the actors as the "essence" of Ball and Lee, his goal being to capture the spirit of the performers without impersonating them exactly. "By the Waters of the Minnetonka" will delight fans of "I Love Lucy". It's the familiar shtick of Lucy trying to weasel her way into Ricky's act at the club. Fredo, as Ricky, manages to capture Ricky Ricardo's accent and attitude without being campy. Those only familiar with Lucille Ball's comedy may be surprised by her musical background. Jamestown Gals features songs from her starring role in the movie version of Mame and her Broadway performance in Wildcat. Peggy Lee received an Oscar nomination for "Bye Bye Blackbird" from Pete Kelly's Blues and won a Grammy for "Is That All There Is?" Walline's father, who served as the catalyst for this musical once mused to Michael that these two talents were both from Jamestown- Lee was from Jamestown, ND and Ball from Jamestown, NY. With his father's inspiration, Walline studied the musical histories of the two legends and put together this revue.

  • N O F X Au Festivent Ville De Lévis

LIVING THE PUNK LIFE IN GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN: EXPLORING CONTRADICTION IN THE MUSIC OF NOFX By Kieran James The University of Southern Queensland Address for Correspondence: Dr Kieran James, School of Accounting, Economics & Finance, Faculty of Business, University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba Qld. 4350, Australia. Tel: +61 411447530. Primary E-mail: [email protected]; Alternate E-Mail: [email protected]. 1 LIVING THE PUNK LIFE IN GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN: EXPLORING CONTRADICTION IN THE MUSIC OF NOFX Abstract This paper studies song lyrics from three mid-period songs written and performed by Californian punk band NOFX. I discuss NOFX‟s skilful exploration of contradiction in the three selected songs, two of which are character studies of a single young male individual. The questions that the songs pose in true dialectical fashion (but do not definitively answer) include: Is it possible to maintain the carefree existential existence of the archetypal punk rocker in the face of the constraints imposed by suburban life and the voices of middle-class moderation? Can a Jewish gang in Fairfax, Los Angeles simultaneously affirm group self- identity, defend its turf, and practise its (marginalized) religion? Can a young man enjoy Christianity because it makes his life „seem less insane‟ whilst simultaneously taking control of his life and not being a Christian sheep? NOFX poses these questions in admirable dialectical fashion, allows us to reflexively examine the issues involved, and form our own conclusions. The band rarely descends into moralism but moral values underpin NOFX‟s worldview. Above all, NOFX tries to maintain a sophisticated but precarious „both/and‟ rather than „either/or‟ approach to each one of the questions posed in this abstract.

I read an entire bookBy TLPretty rare for me to make it through a whole book (thanks dyslexia), also pretty rare to read a music bio book that goes into the details of how screwed up people can get but also has some light at the end of tunnel redemption. This is not just a laundry list of all the dumb sh*t each band member got into although there is a fair amount of that. Its also an interesting read on one of the few bands that is truly an independent and has been doing it for a very long time successfully and on their own terms to say the least.Eriks story takes center stage here and rightfully so as it could be used as a model for anyone whos life has gone totally off the rails and needs to know that they can come out the other side.Ill admit I am biased because I was lucky enough to call Erik a friend of mine when I lived in California for a few years.

  • Single Album
NOFX – Single Album (36:23, Digital, CD, Vinyl, Fat Wreck Chords/Edel, 2021) NOFX? Ernsthaft jetzt? Into The Unknown“-Album bereitet.

  • The Cost of Punk to Come
Welcome to issue 14 of TNSrecords fanzine. This one really has been a long time coming. However, to make up for that it is the biggest issue yet and it has lots of new contributors, which is always nice and is much appreciated. We have loads of new releases for you and we’ve interviewed most of the bands involved with those. You can see our most recent releases in the advert to your left. We didn’t interview Revenge... I’m in them so that would just be weird, but you can hear what the other bands have to say later on. We have also, as always, chatted to some bands, labels, distros and fanzines who are not directly related to TNS. And obviously we have a series of columns and reviews for you to check out from a range of different people. Our three most recent releases have all been available on vinyl and have also been collectively released. It’s great to be working with some really amazing labels so check out 5FeetUnder (Denmark), Entes Anomicos (Germany), Boss Tuneage (UK), DeadLamb (Ireland) and Pumpkin (UK) and grab some of their releases. Personally vinyl is my favourite format, but at this time we can’t afford to do everything on record. Hopefully long term, that might be an option. We’ll see. We’re interested to hear your thoughts on that. issue14 Anyway, that’s enough from me. Enjoy! Andy This issue was put together by Mr T, Ebo Morrice, Jack Brew, Matt Woods, Jono Coot, Mikey Wong, Nathan Mallon, Jim Sorrow, Lee Morrissey, Dave Allcock, Leo Harvey, Tom UPCOMING TNS GIGS Houseman, Liam McDevitt, Kurt Wood and Andy Davies.
