Overview

General IBM BladeCenter® Open Fabric Manager makes blade deployment easy. IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager is designed to help administrators manage change and growth by making it easy to configure I/O and network interconnects for up to 100 BladeCenter chassis — up to 1400 blade servers. While competitive tools typically support a small number of proprietary blades and switches, IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager allow you to manage many more Ethernet and Fibre Channel switches — Cisco, Nortel, Brocade, and QLogic. The utility can be deployed on existing

IBM United States Announcement 207-300 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1 BladeCenter hardware through a firmware upgrade, helping you protect your current BladeCenter investments and giving you the flexibility to deploy precisely the solution needed to help reduce data center complexity. IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager — Advanced Upgrade and IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager — Advanced Upgrade for IBM Director IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager — Advanced Upgrade is an optional stand-alone utility which requires IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager as a prerequisite. In addition to managing the blade I/O parameters, this utility allows an administrator to create policy-driven automation such as failover pools of BladeCenter servers and create event action plans that can automatically execute in case of a failure or other customer defined trigger. If a trigger event occurs, a blade in the pool can automatically receive I/O parameters and take over for the original blade. The IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager — Advanced Upgrade enables workload virtualization. This utility provides the capability to configure and automatically migrate I/O address parameters. Now failing blades can have their operating systems and applications automatically migrate to a cold spare blade within minutes.

Description

IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager (44W3981) IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager allows the administrator to reassign the Ethernet MAC addresses and Fibre Channel WWN addresses used by the I/O ports on server blades in BladeCenter. This is accomplished via a combination of firmware an installed in the BladeCenter Advanced Management Module, BIOS software installed in the server blades, and firmware in the I/O expansions cards. Instead of being restricted to use only the addresses that are assigned at the time the I/O devices are manufactured, the administrator can control which addresses are used by each of the I/O ports on the blades. In addition, other I/O related address and control parameters such as boot device addresses and Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) tags can be assigned to individual blades under control of BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager. The address and parameter assignments let blades be easily changed in order to simplify typical server, network, and storage administration tasks associated with dynamic provisioning, resource reconfiguration and blade replacement/failover. IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager enables network and storage resources to be

IBM United States Announcement 207-300 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 2 preprovisioned and configured before the server blades arrive on site for initial installation and deployment. Typically the MAC and WWN addresses that will be used by the server hardware are not known until the hardware arrives onsite and these addresses are manually recorded from the labels on the hardware. This manual effort is subject to human error. Using IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager, the administrator can establish the addresses that each blade will use from a predefined pool of addresses before the hardware arrives and then implement these new address assignments when the hardware arrives. This helps improve time to production for the server blades so that the LAN and SAN resources can be assigned to preassigned addresses that the blades will use before the server blades actually arrive on site. Optionally, if the blades are being booted from external Fibre Channel SAN storage, IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager will allow one or two potential boot targets to be specified. IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager — Advanced Upgrade (46C3551) The IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager — Advanced Upgrade provides the capability to configure I/O address parameters using a GUI and supports the ability to enable failing blades to have their operating systems and applications automatically migrate to a cold spare blade within minutes in a standalone utility. When triggered, IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager — Advanced Upgrade immediately brings the blade offline, moves the applications and operating system over to a blade from the standby pool, and then brings up the new blade. This utility also lets spare hardware take over in the event of a catastrophic hardware failure event. This solution provides a mechanism to designate a pool of spare blades that will take over in the event of such a failure. In addition, an optional VLAN tag can be assigned to the Ethernet ports. The configuration of SAN zoning storage controllers, Logic Unit Number (LUN) masking, and Ethernet networks typically require the administrator to use additional tools. Beyond initial blade deployment, blades can be replaced easily without the need to reconfigure network and storage resources by ensuring that the addresses assigned previously to a given blade can automatically be applied to a new blade that is inserted into the same chassis or slot. The automatic replace/remap function eliminates the labor-intensive LAN and SAN reconfiguration that is typically required when replacing a failed blade. In order to implement IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager Advanced Upgrade, a server is set up to remotely manage and monitor the domain consisting of up to 100 chassis and 1400 blades. When the IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager — Advanced Upgrade receives a failure alert from a blade it powers off that blade, transfers the I/O address parameters to a spare blade and powers on the spare blade. The spare blade, which is now using the failed blade's Fibre Channel I/O address World Wide Name (WWN) can now access the storage that was previously owned by the failing blade. IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager — Advanced Upgrade is available with a phased introduction of the above functions. Specifically, in Phase 1 you can define failover pools of BladeCenter servers and create action plans that can automatically execute in case of a failure. If a problem occurs, a blade in the failover pool can automatically receive I/O parameters and take over for the failed blade. IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager — Advanced Upgrade for IBM Director (46C3552) This option provides all the functions stated earlier as part of IBM Director. It provides the capability to configure I/O address parameters using a GUI interface and supports the ability to enable failing blades to have their operating systems and applications automatically migrate to a cold spare blade within minutes. This IBM Director Extension delivers all the functions of the stand-alone utility integrated into a standard IBM Director console. IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager — Advanced Upgrade for IBM Director is available with a phased introduction of the advanced functions. Specifically, in Phase 1 the administrator can define failover pools of BladeCenter servers and create action plans that can automatically execute in case of a failure. If a problem occurs, a blade in the failover pool automatically receives I/O parameters and takes over for the failed blade.
