It argues that the three productions―from 1972, 1988 and 2012―each use cross-cultural casting in ways that illuminate the phases of inclusion for British performers of colour. Peter Coe’s 1972 The Black Macbeth was staged at a time when an implicit colour bar in Shakespeare was in place, but black performers were included in the production in ways that reinforced dominant racial stereotypes.

I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. It is a dream come true for me to bring a great new play from this beloved theatre to our stage. We are committed to being world curious here at the Grand Theatre and this production is the first of many international productions to come. This fine company of artists joins us in the middle of their tour, which began in October in Arizona and has been touring on the us West Coast. We are the only Canadian stop on their journey, and following their time here, they head directly to the Kennedy Center in Washington, dc. We are truly in fine company. Barber Shop Chronicles dazzles on every level — but what I will always remember is how powerful a story can be when it is presented directly and honestly, with a whole pile of theatrical fun.

NICOLE VOLAVKA Director www.nicolevolavka.com BIOGRAPHY Nicole is an award-winning drama director working across TV, film and commercials. Her five short films have shown at numerous international film festivals and her pilot for feature film SEEKERS was funded by the BFI. She was twice nominated for the Cannes Lions Young Director award for her work in commercials. Actors she has directed include Tom Burke (The Musketeers), Anna Madeley (In Bruges), David Ajala (The Dark Knight), Paul Ready (Utopia) and Clare-Hope Ashitey (Children of Men). Nicole holds an MA in Filmmaking from The London Film School.
