9th July 2021

We have reached the end of an academic year like no other. Ivanhoe has seen many changes this academic year – the return of remote education, the introduction of in-school and subsequent home COVID-19 testing, the beginning of our age range change journey and our transition into LiFE MAT to name but a few – and throughout, the students and the staff of Ivanhoe have dealt with these changes with a fantastic attitude and resilience. I would like to extend a huge thank you to the Ivanhoe families who diligently supported their children throughout this challenging year; through home learning, the subsequent return to school and the various changes in the COVID-19 guidance and restrictions. I know that it was a very tough and challenging time for many – yet our students that have demonstrated their amazing attitude to learning throughout. Of course, a huge thank you also goes to my staff team: both teaching and support staff, who have worked so hard during these unpresented times. Despite the challenges of the year, our students have achieved so much. I would like to thank all of our students for their hard work, effort and many achievements throughout the year.

This week, we have said goodbye to our Year 9 students. Throughout their time at Ivanhoe we have watched them grow from young children to young adults, and we are so proud of how far they have come. As they continue on their journey towards their GCSEs we are confident they will achieve highly. As Gandhi said: “There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in our hearts.” From all of the leadership team and staff: we wish you good luck for the future. Continued overleaf

As we enter the school holidays, we really want to ensure students have support and this service can be used both during term time and in the holidays. It is a fantastic free service which supports students' mental health and well- being and is a brilliant tool for lots of different aspects of this. Click here to watch a video about Kooth. . Finally, it is a time to say goodbye to some of our long standing staff who are retiring or leaving us for pastures new. Thank you to the following colleagues: we really appreciate all that you have done for the school and wish you very good luck in the future. Mrs. Berrow, SEND Teacher, who has been with Ivanhoe for 20 years * Mrs. Geary, Science Technician, who has been with Ivanhoe for 19 years * Miss. Twigg, Cover Supervisor, who has been with Ivanhoe for 15 years * Mrs. Watkins, French Teacher * Mrs. Holmes, Learning Support Assistant * Mr. Oakley, Learning Support Assistant

In the new school year, we will welcome some new faces to the Ivanhoe Team:

 Mrs. Thompson, Spanish Teacher * Mr. Burrows, Maths Teacher * Miss. Doran, Science Technician * Mr. Hunt, Learning Support Assistant As I write this newsletter, the Department of Education have outlined some of the steps on Step 4 of the COVID Roadmap. You can read about these steps here. Read on in this newsletter to read more about the initial measures in place as set out in my MyEd message to Year 7 and Year 8 students earlier this week. We wish all of our students and colleagues a happy and safe summer and look forward to seeing you in the new school year.

Multi Academy Trust Update

On 1st July, joined the LiFE Multi Academy Trust and its schools; , , Kingsway Primary, Braunstone Frith Primary, Countesthorpe Academy, and Ibstock Community College,

The vision and values of LiFE are based on a commitment to a collaborative approach of working. Under the leadership of the CEO, Chris Parkinson, LiFE MAT has already had a positive impact in developing collaboration and sharing best practice across the group of schools. Joining the MAT gives Ivanhoe an an exciting opportunity for our school leaders to work with the Leadership Team at LiFE to continue to build on the good work that has already been done within the college.

On the date of the transfer, a representative from the Department for Education said “I am confident that these decisions will stand to benefit the local community and children for years to come." As Headteacher, I am delighted that Ivanhoe has joined LiFE MAT and welcome the exciting opportunities that this will bring our school. Lateral Flow Testing Many thanks for your support with lateral flow testing this academic year and for your efforts with regard to home learning. Without your outstanding parental support, we would not have been so successful at keep Covid numbers down in the school environment.

Planning for next year We have just received the guidance from the government about arrangements for next year. Please refer to my headteacher’s letter sent today(9th July). In brief: The school day will return to a shorter break (20 mins) in the morning and a longer lunch (45 mins). We will run two separate breaks and two separate lunches next year in case we have to move to separate year group bubbles. In the first instance, Year 7 will have lunch together with half of year 8 and then Year 9 will have lunch together with the other half of Year 8. This will rotate across the week. Lessons will return to 5 x 1 hour lessons per day and students will be allowed to move around the school building to different departments and classrooms. Further details are in the letter, but in the meantime, please keep an eye on the website where we will update parents as soon as we have clarity and make sure that you have the MyEd app downloaded with the latest updates. Or keep an eye on our news area on the website. https://www.ivanhoe.co.uk/content/news.php Thank you again for your support and have a restful break.

Water bottle reminder All students must bring a reusable water bottle to school. Following the school decision to stop selling bottles of water in the canteen for ecological reasons, it has been expected that all students will bring a reusable water bottle to school. We have added extra water fountains around school as well as have bottles available to buy or exchange house points for in school. Please ensure your child has a water bottle in their bag every School Uniform

Please take time to familiarise yourself with the Ivanhoe Uniform standards on our website: https://www.ivanhoe.co.uk/uniform. We will expect all students returning in Autumn to have full correct uniform, including correct shoes and P.E. kit.

In particular may we draw your attention to the details regarding piercings, which will need to be removed before returning to school. (we allow one small sleeper or stud in the earlobe)

We have made a small change to our uniform policy and now allow grey smart shorts all year as an alternative to trousers or skirts. These can be purchased from Ashby School Wear.

All of our uniform suppliers are offering online ordering, and you can also buy in store at Ashby Schoolwear and Pupil Schoolwear (in Swadlincote). https://ashbyschoolwear.co.uk https://pupilschoolwear.co.uk

Marks and Spencer will be running their annual 20% discount scheme from 6th July to 3rd August. http://www.mandsyourschooluniform.com

P.E. Kit

Following a consultation with students, staff and parents, we have decided on a Covid Keeper for next year. That is to continue allowing our students to come to school in their PE kit on the days they have PE. New Year 7 students will need to attend school on Wednesday 25th August in their full school uniform. On this day, those who have ordered their PE kit through LissSport will be given it. Also on this day, students will find out their timetables and what days they have PE. They can then wear their PE kit on those days moving forward. Year 8 and Year 9 students will need to attend school in their full school uniform on their first day back. They will find out their timetables and what days they have PE on, and can then wear their PE kit on those days moving forward. The deadline to order new PE Kit from Lissport is 11th July to be delivered in time for the start of the school year. Please order online at https://www.lisssport.co.uk Full details of the P.E. Kit requirements can be found here. Including details of the new boys rugby shirt.

There is also a local facebook page called ‘Ashby de la Zouch Parents Uniform Exchange’ where families can buy, sell or gift secondhand uniform.

We also accept donations of clean good quality school uniform at school, please drop off at school reception. Keeping your child safe this summer .

Safeguarding is at the heart of all we do at Ivanhoe. All of our students have had a presentation about staying safe this summer. It is an unfortunate fact that more children are killed or injured during the school holidays than at any other time. As restrictions come to an end it is understandable that young people want to get out and have fun, but as many of them have spent the last year or more without such freedoms they need reminding of how to keep themselves safe. Despite the fact that we had to hold them virtually, we felt it was so important to recognise the hard work of our students across all year groups. All students across the school should feel incredibly proud of everything they have achieved in challenging circumstances. Students that had been nominated by 5 or more teachers as an outstanding student were invited to the online event, over 3 evenings. In each subject area, staff then made the tough decision of naming one student as their ‘student of the year’. This student embodied an excellent attitude and commitment to the subject. A huge congratulations to all students who won subject awards. They each received a trophy which was kindly sponsored by BSI and the Rotary Club. Winners were as follows:

Summer Reading Challenge With the summer break here, it is a perfect time to immerse yourself in a good book. We are asking all the Year 6 students coming to Ivanhoe, current Year 7 students and current Year 8 students to take up the Summer Reading Challenge.

The challenge is to read a minimum of five books, fiction or non-fiction, and fill in the challenge sheet. This sheet can be printed out from Moodle and copies have been distributed this week by English teachers (who will also email a copy to the students). There are book suggestions on the sheet: check out your local library for these and more. We are very fortunate to have the eBook service in school which all Year 7 and 8 students can access over the summer. There are so many wonderful books to discover!

House points will be awarded for all books read: as long as the sheet has been filled in! As an added incentive, the English class in each Year who read the most books will get a class prize. Everyone who completes the challenge fully will also be put into a draw for a £10 gift voucher – one per Year group. All to read for!

Please encourage our students to read this summer. Research shows that reading regularly is good for literacy – an important skill for life – as well as having a positive impact on mental health and well-being. Studies demonstrate that students who read frequently are more likely to succeed above their predicted levels at GCSE. There are not many better activities for improvement and success than reading!

Have a great summer break and happy reading!

Click here to vote Using board games to support your child in developing their Computational Thinking.

Computational Thinking is an essential skill set for 21st Century learning and working. Computational Thinking is not about thinking like a Computer, it is about problem solving so that a final solution could be completed using a computer. We can break Computational Thinking into 4 distinct areas;

 Decomposition– Breaking the problem into smaller chunks, which are easier to think about.

 Abstraction– Changing how the problem is looked at, identifying only the important details.

 Pattern Recognition – Looking for similarities between our current problem and past problems to see if there is some previous knowledge/solution we can think about.

 Algorithms – Creating a step by step plan of action. In our Year 7 Computing lessons this past week, we have used a board game to not only deliver some database concepts, but also to encourage development of Computational Thinking in a fun and exciting way. We played a modified version of Archers of NAND by Pablo Garaizar where players are using command cards to select areas of the board to attack/ defend.

Board games are great way of developing Computational Thinking as well as a great way to engage with others and develop those interpersonal skills. Computational Thinking Diagram Source: BBC Bitesize Using a popular game, Ticket to Ride, we’ll demonstrate where these skills can be developed. Ticket to Ride is a game where players are tasked with creating train routes between cities to complete objective cards. Players can claim sections of routes by playing train cards. Click here for a how to play video This game encourages players to break their routes in to sections (Decomposition) rewards players who plan ahead (Algorithms). In playing the game, players will become less interested in other places they are not connecting, focusing on the details they need (Abstraction), experienced players will also be watching what other players are doing to see if they are competing for the same locations (Pattern recognition) If you are interested in using board games there are plenty of games out there and ways to play;

 Purchasing a physical game – Board games have grown in popularity and many retailers now stock popular games such as Ticket to Ride, Downforce & Scotland Yard.

 Purchasing a digital game – Some board games are available to purchase on digital stores such as Steam, PlayStation & Xbox Stores.

 Playing online – Some board games can be played for free in web browser using websites such as Tabletopia & Board Game Arena.  Printing & Playing – Some games are available to be downloaded, printed out and played. A good source of these are Asmodee & PNPArcade.

Board games are a great way of developing Computational Thinking as well as fun activity to bring friends and families together, which can boost wellbeing and improve communication skills. Mr Thornewill - Subject Lead Computing GENEROUS DONATION YEAR 9 FESTIVAL

This year a selection of students from Year 7 and 8 have been taking part in a ‘scholars programme’ in conjunction with Cambridge University. The scholars programme provides pupils with an experience of university through tutorials from a university PhD tutor. Bridget from Year 7 said, “The thing I enjoyed the most about the course was obtaining new knowledge and learning more about university style work, finding time to complete the work was a challenge but I overcame this by organising my time better. My project was about Life Expectancies around the World.”

Extract from Bridget’s project. “Fiji has made some steps towards tackling its downfalls, however, I believe that by implementing my recommendations, to improve its diet and increase the population’s exercise; improve Fiji’s poverty rate by paying more money and giving its younger people opportunities to gain training; and by reducing its smoking rate, the country will improve its life expectancy and wellbeing.”

“Continuing to make such improvements, Fiji has shown a great potential of becoming a strong, outstanding country!”

Shell Bright Ideas

Congratulations to the year 7s who took part in Shell’s ‘Bright Idea’s Challenge’, unfortunately we didn’t have a winner but all worked incredibly hard and got a certificate from Shell for their efforts. Bridget Murray designed a wormery, as seen her, and Thalia Johnson, Lauren Beavin, Isla Watson and Isla Wevill designed ‘Sunflower Power’ which uses Sunflower seeds to power a city. Well done all. Building Work Update

We have an extensive amount of work taking place this summer, around the school. Work has already commenced on the refurbishment of the astro-turf pitch, with new fencing and surfacing and will be completed for the students return. Following a successful bid to the CIF fund the remainder of the heating in the school will be upgraded, which will dramatically improve the efficiency and eco credentials of the school. The science block will be having a mini refurbishment with new flooring and redecoration, and finally as always Summer holidays will see our annual health and safety compliance checks taking place. A huge thank you to our premises and cleaning team, who have worked tirelessly in our efforts to keep our school covid safe, with additional cleaning, comprehensive risk assessments and managing our supplies of PPE, testing and sanitizer.

Well done to our amazing PE award winners this year!! Year 7 – Bridget Murray

Bridget attended every single active club this year. She is a role model to her peers. Her enthusiasm is outstanding and will give all activities a go. She is also a supportive member within PE and helps out her fellow classmates. Bridget has blossomed in confidence during her first year at Ivanhoe. Year 8 – Layla Keller

Layla is a P.E. role model who always demonstrates an outstanding attitude to learning. She always has a positive attitude and determination to do their best. Layla is willing to step up and help out in any way she can. She is also a born leader and an excellent overall sports person. Year 9 – Joe Harris

Joe is a hardworking, motivated and enthusiastic young man. He strives to be the very best he can be in every lesson. Joe is an exceptional role model and leader. He is a Sports Leader and Silver Sports Ambassador who recently visited local Primary Schools to talk to Year 6 students about all things PE and delivered a practical session. It’s been an absolute pleasure to teach Joe throughout his time at Ivanhoe. Well done and good luck for the future!

Sports Leaders

We have had 25 students who have committed their time and efforts to successfully complete their level 1 Sports Leaders qualification this year. Despite being faced with many barriers throughout this challenging year, these students have worked hard to develop their leadership skills which they have then applied to support their sports clubs, both inside and outside of school, and their PE lessons. The sports leaders have done a fantastic job and the PE department is extremely proud of their achievement.

Silver Sports Ambassadors

We have been lucky this year to have 6 Silver Sports Ambassadors representing Ivanhoe College. These students have been responsible for promoting physical activity within the school and the community. As part of their role, they supported the PE department for the 3 days of Sports Day and visited 2 local primary schools to deliver a taster session of PE to the upcoming year 6 students. They have been outstanding role models to the rest of the school and have demonstrated huge maturity and excellent leadership. FA Whistlers Qualification

We are really proud that this term, we have had 36 Year 7 and Year 8 girls complete the FA Whistler Qualification. This has consisted of some practical and some theory elements for the girls can complete, and it has been fantastic to see their confidence grow with the rules of the game, and their confidence to referee. They have really enjoyed the course and we hope that many of them will continue to referee and continue on their refereeing journey. A big thank you to all of the girls that attended and tried their best in every session. PE Extra-Curricular Clubs

We are unbelievably proud of all of our students that have taken part in our extra-curricular offer this year. Whilst it has looked different from our ‘normal’, over 350 students attended a club over the past year. The extra-curricular clubs on offer have been vast, with activities such as rounders, football, rugby, netball, cricket and badminton. All of these activities were offered through after-school, but we also trialled our first virtual extra-curricular clubs this year, which was also a massive success. Our active clubs also received brilliant numbers and our students took part in things such as boxing, Zumba, yoga, martial arts and fitness. We cannot wait for what the next academic year will bring and the opportunities we will be able to offer. Thank you to all the parents for their support with students attending extra-curricular too – we know it would not be possible without your support with regards to transport and encouragement. Finally, a special thank you to the 10 members of staff outside of the PE Department who gave up their time to lead or support a club – we couldn’t of done it without you!

Did you spot our Sport Leaders on Central news on Thursday 8th July, talking about the Euro 2021 final? We think you’ll agree with our students when they say, ‘England winning will be a fantastic end to a challenging year” Come on England!!!

Concerns outside of school hours

We seek to do everything we reasonably can to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students. I am sure you will appreciate that there are limits to this outside of school hours and especially during the holidays.

We would therefore recommend that you…. • Monitor closely your child’s activity on social media. Most of the problems we have to deal with at the start of each term relate to antisocial behaviour that has taken place online during the holidays. If your child is being seriously abused online, contact the police. https:// www.ivanhoe.co.uk/protecting-your-child-online

• Let us know if there have been any issues that we need to be aware of as soon as possible so we can respond promptly and appropriately when school reopens. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to respond to emails etc. out of school hours.

• Contact Social Services if you feel they should be aware of an issue. You can call the Social Services Central Duty Team on 0116 305 0005 or make an online referral via the following link https://

www.leicestershire.gov.uk/leisure-and-community/community-safety/ report-abuse-or-neglect-of-a-child

• Contact the police straight away if you believe a child is in immediate danger.

Thank you for your support on this matter. Mr G. Bellmore Deputy Headteacher FINES FOR UNAUTHORISED ABSENCES

 We are required to submit attendance data, including details of students with unauthorised absences to County Council.

 As part of the crack down on poor attendance the Council will now be issuing fines to parents.

 This will be for term time holidays and other unauthorised absences. The school have no involvement in the issuing of fines, nor do we receive any revenue from fining.
