Vll ABSTRACT This thesis explores the meaning and significance of migration and return migration between the Maltese island of Gozo and the Austtalian city of Melboume. The exploration begins in the Inttoduction with 'Lina', a Gozitan retum migrant from Melboume whose situation captures the dilemma of cultural 'hybridity'. Through Lina, the reader is infroduced in turn to the concept of crossings into worlds beyond the familiar, a metaphor which is employed throughout the thesis. With her experience of crossings, Lina, it is suggested, is, like so many Gozitans, simultaneously 'home' and 'homeless'. As argued throughout the thesis, among Gozitan migrant and retum migrant communities, diversity and difference coexist alongside similarity and unity, and should not be thought of as mutually exclusive. Similarly, it is argued that local and global must be understood as intermeshed—^particularly in the processes of migration and retum migration—if we are to understand the evolving Gozitan identity. These themes are elaborated in the followmg three chapters, which explore the ways in which being 'Gozitan' are articulated, as well as the ways in which 'non-Gozitan' characteristics of life are negotiated. Chapter 1, 'Ferry Crossmgs', explores how Gozitans maintain essentialised representations of IX their island and themselves in deliberate conttast to the neighbouring island of Malta and the Maltese. Chapter 2, 'Gozitan Identity Under Construction', elaborates some of the theoretical difficulties and conttadictions of such idealised self- representations. It engages with debates surrounding questions of identity formation in relation to Gozitan migrants to the western suburbs of Melboume and retum migrants back to Gozo. Borrowing such concepts as 'positionality', 'habitus', 'hidden franscripts' and 'reflexivity', the chapter establishes a conceptual and theoretical framework for approaching the notion of 'Gozitan identity'. Chapter 3, 'Double Crossings: Positioned Ethnography and Writing Gozo', outlines the ethnographic method employed to research these issues. As the chapter describes, the writer's engagement with the topic—as 'outside' researcher and 'inside' Gozitan—was at times a problematic process. As its title suggests, the chapter sets the stage for ethnographically mapping the contours of Gozitan identity as they are affected by the crossings and double (retum) crossings between Gozo and Melboume. The following four chapters focus on the crossings to Austtalia. They describe how the conditions of life in Melbourne's westem suburbs and the ways in which Gozitan migrants responded to them generated a set of socially-produced practices and perceptions—a 'habitus' in Bourdieu's terms—^which continues to inform and form thefr sense of who they are and their place in the world. Specifically, Chapter 4, 'The Land at the Edge of the World', describes how Gozitans transformatively created 'Gozo' in Melboume as they settled in the municipality of Brimbank. As the chapter argues, perceived similarities between the westem suburbs of Melboume and the island of Gozo were refracted, in particular, through the prism of identification with the land. Chapter 5 argues that just as land is cenfral to the habitus of Gozitan identity, so too is work. 'Making Dreams Work' explores the importance of work— including recreational activities—for Gozitans, and contends that in the process of negotiating what it means to be Gozitan in Melboume the work ethic is cenfral. Chapter 6 explores another centtal element underpinning Gozitan identity in Melboume—^religion.

The outbreak of Sicilian revolution of 12 January 1848 was precisely what everyone in Malta had been expecting: for months, the press had followed the rebellious stirrings, the spread of letters and subversive papers, and the continuous movements of the British fleet in Sicilian harbours. A huge number of revolutionaries had already found refuge in Malta, I escaping from the Bourbons and anxious to participate in their country's momentous events. During their stay in the island, they shared their life experiences with other refugees; the freedom of the press that Malta obtained in 1839 - after a long struggle against the British authorities - gave them the possibility to give free play to audacious thoughts and to deliver them in writing to their 'distant' country.     THE BUILDING OF A NEW CHURCH DEDICATED TO SAINT JULIAN IN 1682 Eugene F. Montanaro When Achille Ferres wrote his Descrizione Storica Delle Chiese Di Malta E Gozo (1866), he recorded of the village of Saint Julians, somewhat summarily: La sua primitiva chiesuola e antichissima, fabbricata verso if 1580. Essa pero venne riedificata nel1682 .1 Though quite remarkably accurate, Ferres' s account does not provide specific source notes, and cannot therefore be regarded as authoritative. In this short study I shall attempt to place on record for the first time, archival material concerning the building of a new church at Saint Julians in 1682. The relevant documentation tends to confirm Achille Ferres's unequivocal assertion that this new church was in fact built on the site of a humble chapel. THE SUPPLICA The licence (called a faculty) to demolish the existing chapel dedicated to St. Julian and to rebuild a larger church, was obtained from the competent ecclesiastical authorities on 2 March 1682. The necessary permit was granted in answer to a supplica, or petition, submitted to the Bishop of Malta by Don Mario Haxixa and Domenico Gat, procuratori della Ven. Chiesa sotto titolo diS. Giuliano, posta nei limiti della Chiesa Parochiale e Collegiata di Birchircara.2 The petition, though perhaps laconic in style and content, is nonetheless revealing and, to a certain extent, anecdotal.     Global Environmental Change and Small Island States and Territories: Economic and Labour Market Implications of Climate Change on the Transport Sector of the Maltese Islands Professor Maria Attard Abstract: This position paper addresses the impact of global environmental change, specifically on transport in Malta with special attention to the economic implications of changes on (i) employment, (ii) product or service growth/decline, (iii) capital investment, (iv) competitiveness and (v) skills/educational development and upgrade. Geographic and economic data is used to support the study. The paper addresses the concerns and attempts to map the extent of potential damage of environmental change on the islands’ transport system and describes the implications of such change. The paper concludes with a call for the adoption of sustainable transport measures which address not only mitigation but also adaptation to global environmental change. Keywords: transport, Malta, sea level rise, extreme weather events Introduction Global environmental change is perhaps the most significant challenge for this century and as populations across the globe struggle with extreme weather events and the impacts of increased pollution the risks associated with global environmental change still remain uncertain and heavily debated. Even the reports calculating future damages and judgments about adaptation and mitigation measures for climate change differ widely (Stern, 2007; Tol, 2006). This position paper attempts to addresses the impact of global environmental change, specifically on transport in Malta with special attention to the economic implications of changes on (i) employment, (ii) product or service growth/decline, (iii) capital investment, (iv) competitiveness, and (v) skills/educational development and upgrade. Source: ABC News. “I’m happy, and I’m sad for the people who have gone already … we had a minute’s silence for them … but it’s been very tiring fighting for this for three years,” said Maxine Kunde, the leader Mgr Charles Gauci - Bishop of Darwin of a group of 42 survivors that took civil action against the church and Commonwealth in the Northern Territory Supreme Court. At age six, Ms Kunde, along with her brothers and sisters, was forcibly taken from her mother under the then-federal government’s policy of removing children of mixed descent from their parents. Garden Point survivors, many of whom travelled to Darwin from all over Australia, agreed yesterday to settle the case, and Maxine Kunde (ABC News/Tiffany Parker) received an informal apology from representatives of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, in a private session.Ms Kunde said members of the group were looking forward to getting a formal public apology which they had been told would be delivered in a few weeks’ time. LEMNACEAE) IN THE MALTESE ISLANDS Stephen MIFSUD1 _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT The occurrence of Lemna minuta Kunth in the Maltese Islands is reported for the first time, from two sites in Malta and one site in Gozo. Notes on its historical and current distribution in Europe, its invasive properties and its habitat preferences in Malta are given. Also included are the distinguishing morphological features from the closely related Lemna minor L., another frequent alien species of ponds and valleys in the Maltese islands. Keywords: Lemna minuta, valleys, watercourses, alien species, invasive species, flora of Malta INTRODUCTION Lemna minuta Kunth (synonyms: L. minuscula Heter ; L. minima Phil ex Hegelm) commonly known as Least Duckweed, is native to the eastern area of North America, western coasts of Mexico and stretches in temprate zones in Central and South America (Mesterházy et al., 2007). It was introduced into Europe in the last third of the 20th Century where, soon after, it had become naturalised in several European countries. It was first recorded in Europe erroneously as L. valdiviana from Biarritz, South West of France in 1965 and then as L. minuscula from Cambridge, UK in 1977 (Landolt, 1979 cited in Lacey, 2003).     Brian J. Dendle RICHARD ENGLAND, POET OF MALTA AND THE MIDDLE SEA To Richard England and Peter Serracino Inglott, in homage and friendship Richard England, the son of the Maltese architect Edwin Eng­ land Sant Fournier, was born in Sliema, Malta, 3 October 1937. He was educated at St. Edward's College (Cottonera, Malta), studied architecture at the (then) Royal University of Malta (1954-61) and at the Milan Polytechnic, and worked as a stu­ dent-architect in the studio of Gio Ponti in Milan (1960-62). Richard England's Maltese works include designs of numerous hotels (Ramla Bay Hotel, Paradise Bay Hotel, 1964; Dolmen Hotel, 1966; Cavalieri Hotel, 1968; Salina Bay Hotel, 1970), tourist villages, apartment complexes, bank buildings (Central Bank of Malta, Valletta, 1993), and the University of Malta campus extension (1990-1995). Richard England has also de­ signed residential and office complexes in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Sardinia, and Argentina. His work has won numerous interna­ tional prizes and merited his inclusion among the 585 leading international architects treated in Contemporary Architects (London, 1994) and in the anthology of the 581 outstanding world architects published in Japan in 1995. Richard England's architecture is characterized by sim­ plicity and a respect for the "vernacular" tradition of Malta. His hotels, "low-lying, terraced structures built of concrete and local stone" (Abel, Manikata Church 39), disturb the landscape as little as possible. Michael Spens stresses "England's regionalism," with its roots in Maltese culture and pre-history SCRIPTA MEDITERRANEA, 1997, Vol. 18, 87 88 Brian f. Dendle (Spens 286) . Chris Abel points out the sculptural aspect of Eng­ land's buildings, "more Greek than Roman in spirit," "an archi­ tecture of shadow to create an architecture of light" (Trans­ formations 10).
