  • 'O Rose Thou Art Sick': Floral Symbolism in William Blake's Poetry
‘O Rose Thou Art Sick’: Floral Symbolism in William Blake’s Poetry Noelia Malla1 ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Available Online March 2014 The primary aim of this paper is to analyse the symbolic implications of Key words: floral imagery in William Blake’s poetry. More specifically, this study William Blake; explores the process of floral (re)signification of William Blake’s Songs of Songs of Innocence and of Innocence (1789) and Songs of Experience (1794) as case studies. Since Experience; “Without contraries [there] is no progression” (Marriage of Heaven and The Sick Rose; Hell, plate 3), it can be argued that the Songs represent contrary aspects floral imagery. of the human condition that far from contradicting each other, establish a static contrast of shifting tensions and revaluation of the flower-image not only as a perfect symbol of the “vegetable” life rooted to the Earth but also as a figure longing to be free. In some sense at some level, the poetic- prophetic voice asserts in the Songs of Experience the state of corruption where man has fallen into. Ultimately, this study will explore how the failure to overcome the contrast that is suggested in the Songs will be deepened by the tragedy of Thel, which is symbolized by all unborn forces of life, all sterile seeds as an ultimate means of metaphorical regeneration throughout Poetry which constitutes in itself the Poet Prophet’s own means of transcending through art. William Blake (1757-1827) was the first English poet to work out the revolutionary structure of imagery that (re)signifies through the Romantic poetry.

  • Death No More Bryan Dunagun April 26, 2020 Well, If
Death No More Bryan Dunagun April 26, 2020 Well, if you have a Bible, would you open up to Revelation 21? This is the last book in the Bible, the second to last chapter in the Bible. I want to start off by reading this Scripture together. This is written by a guy named John, one of Jesus' disciples, who's now living in exile as a prisoner of Rome. John has given this vision of the future that we have in Jesus. We'll start in verse 1. "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God prepared as a bride, beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, look, God's dwelling place is now among the people. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain for the old order of things has passed away." Verse 5. "He who was seated on the throne said, “Behold I am making all things new.”, and then he said, “Write this down for these words are trustworthy and true.” He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.

  • Cigars Were Consumed Last Year (1997) in the United States
Smoking and Tobacco Control Monograph No. 9 Preface The recent increase in cigar consumption began in 1993 and was dismissed by many in public health as a passing fad that would quickly dissipate. Recently released data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggests that the upward trend in cigar use might not be as temporary as some had predicted. The USDA now projects a total of slightly more than 5 billion cigars were consumed last year (1997) in the United States. Sales of large cigars, which comprise about two-thirds of the total U.S. cigar market, increased 18 percent between 1996 and 1997. Consumption of premium cigars (mostly imported and hand-made) increased even more, an astounding 90 percent last year and an estimated 250 percent since 1993. In contrast, during this same time period, cigarette consumption declined 2 percent. This dramatic change in tobacco use raises a number of public health questions: Who is using cigars? What are the health risks? Are premium cigars less hazardous than regular cigars? What are the risks if you don't inhale the smoke? What are the health implications of being around a cigar smoker? In order to address these questions, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) undertook a complete review of what is known about cigar smoking and is making this information available to the American public. This monograph, number 9 in a series initiated by NCI in 1991, is the work of over 50 scientists both within and outside the Federal Government. Thirty experts participated in the multi-stage peer review process (see acknowledgments).

  • What Is Your One Thing? Alan Kraft, Lead Pastor
Small Group Discussion Questions Following the Weekend of October 10-11, 2020 Please don’t feel you have to answer every question. What Is Your One Thing? Alan Kraft, Lead Pastor Icebreaker How did you view God as a child? ☐ Like “the force” from Star Wars, with both a good side and a dark side. ☐ As a celestial highway patrolman setting up speed traps to catch people doing wrong. ☐ As a kind and gentle grandfather, like George Burns or Morgan Freeman. ☐ Something based on Michelangelo's depiction of God in the Sistine Chapel. ☐ I didn't really think much about God. ☐ Other: __________. How has your image of God changed over the years? Group Interaction & Application Slowly read aloud Philippians 3:10-14. What words, phrases, or insights stand out to you from these verses, or create some intrigue for you? What uniquely spoke to you from Pastor Alan’s message on these verses, raised some questions, or perhaps generated some push-back? If the Christian life is a marathon, as it’s described in verses 12-14, what stretches have been the most challenging and the most growth-producing for you? In Paul’s race, he clearly articulated his “One thing” —to know Christ. How would you articulate your one thing — your life purpose? Feel free to take a moment and write down some thoughts here … How might you know more fully “the power of Christ’s resurrection?” these days? (Verse 10) What is the connection Paul makes in verses 10-11 between suffering and knowing Jesus? How have your experiences of suffering impacted your relationship with Jesus? What stands out to you about how Paul describes his pursuit of Christ in verses 12- 13? What words would you use to describe your pursuit of Christ in this season and why? What next step do you feel Jesus inviting you to take in your pursuit of Him? Spend time praying for each other in our pursuit of Jesus before praying for other needs and concerns in your group.

Lambchops By Ron Hutchinson “Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?” --- Harry Warner, 1927 In 1925, when the brothers Warner decided to part- ner with Bell Laboratories to use the Vitaphone disk system to present movies with synchronized sound, talking wasn’t part of the plan. The brothers envi- sioned marketing their features with full orchestral scores and limited sound effects. Actors that talked from the screen were an afterthought. But a quick one. When they premiered “Don Juan” in 1926, it boasted a synchronized symphonic score with sound effects that enhanced the John Barrymore swashbuckler. There was no dialog in this otherwise silent film. The sound was on 16-inch shellac disks, turning at 33 1/3 rpm and synched to the picture. As long as the film didn’t break or the needle didn’t skip, everything matched. Audiences applauded, but were more impressed with the short subjects which preceded the feature. These WERE talking pictures, with opera stars, a ukulele player and Will Hays of the Motion Picture Producers Association actually speaking and singing in perfect synchronicity. Tradition says R. gallica was brought from Palestine to France by Thibaut IV (Count of Champagne and Brie, and King of Navarre) after a crusade launched in 1239 A.D. Whether true or not, the town of Provins, located in the region of Champagne, became a center of cultivation for a nearly single cerise-colored seedling of that red rose used by apothecaries for making medicines, conserves, and confections. During the next six centuries the rose’s medicinal and herbal attributes led to its distribution and naturalization throughout mainland Europe and Britain.
