The Fondation Beyeler's Program During Art Basel 2017 Media Release The Fondation Beyeler’s program during Art Basel 2017 The Fondation Beyeler is presenting three exhibitions with a contemporary focus during Art Basel, as well as two Artists’ Talks. The “Wolfgang Tillmans” exhibition is the first comprehensive engagement with the medium of photography at the Fondation Beyeler. Two “constructed situations” by Tino Sehgal will be on show, one in the gardens and one in the museum, while “Beyeler Collection / Remix”, the second exhibition devoted to the permanent collection, opens up a dialog between contemporary acquisitions in recent years and the existing collection. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Daros Collection, the partnership with Daros will be celebrated through the presentation of a number of masterpieces by Andy Warhol. On Thursday June 15, the curator and director of the Kunsthalle Basel, Elena Filipovic, will talk to the artist Tino Sehgal following the recent publication of the book Felix Gonzalez-Torres: Specific Objects Without Specific Form. In 2010 Filipovic curated the exhibition of the same name at the Fondation Beyeler. On Friday June 16, Theodora Vischer, Senior Curator at the Fondation Beyeler, will talk to the artist Wilhelm Sasnal. Several works by Sasnal that were acquired in recent years are being shown for the first time as part of the exhibition “Beyeler Collection / Remix”, within which an entire room is being devoted to them. Exhibitions at the Fondation Beyeler Wolfgang Tillmans May 28 – October 1, 2017 This year’s big summer exhibition is devoted to the artist Wolfgang Tillmans. It is the first comprehensive engagement with the medium of photography at the Fondation Beyeler, which some time ago added an important group of works by Tillmans to its collection. From May 28 through October 1, around 200 photographic works dating from 1989 to 2017 will be on show, together with an installation featuring music videos. In addition to traditional genres such as the portrait, the nude, still life and landscape, the exhibition presents abstract works that play with the limits of the visible. It demonstrates that Tillmans’s work is concerned with the creation of images rather than with photography in the conventional sense. The exhibition has been designed in close cooperation with the artist. An Artist Talk with Wolfgang Tillmans will take place on September 7, as part of the series organized by the Fondation Beyeler and UBS. The “Wolfgang Tillmans” exhibition is generously supported by Beyeler-Stiftung, Hansjörg Wyss/Wyss Foundation and LUMA Foundation. Beyeler Collection / Remix June 10 – September 3, 2017 With works by Andy Warhol from the Daros Collection In 1997, the works of classic modernism and contemporary art painstakingly assembled from the late 1950s onwards by husband-and-wife gallerists and collectors Ernst and Hildy Beyeler were given a home in Renzo Piano’s museum building in Riehen/Basel. Since then, in ever-changing presentations, they have been on permanent display to the public together with subsequent donations by the museum’s founders. The collection of the Fondation Beyeler is being carefully expanded through purchases, donations, partnerships and long-term loans. In 2017 the Fondation Beyeler is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a series of three special exhibitions, which show the collection from three different perspectives: in a look back over its past, a look at the present, and a look ahead to the future. “Remix”, the second exhibition in this series, shows the collection as it is today. The works acquired in recent years give the original collection a contemporary dimension. A key criterion when making decisions about such acquisitions is the dialog these establish with the existing collection. “Remix” will give this dialog a platform in multiple ways. For example, it juxtaposes Gerhard Richter and Robert Rauschenberg, as well as Roni Horn and Ferdinand Hodler. It also devotes an entire room to ten oil paintings by Wilhelm Sasnal. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Daros Collection the partnership with Daros and Fondation Beyeler is being celebrated with a presentation of superlative works by Andy Warhol. The exhibitions of the Beyeler Collection marking the 20th anniversary of the Fondation Beyeler are generously supported by Beyeler-Stiftung, Hansjörg Wyss/Wyss Foundation, Dr. Christoph M. Müller and Sibylla M. Müller, Basler Kantonalbank, Bayer, and ISS Facility Services. Tino Sehgal May 22 – November 12, 2017 From late May until early November 2017, the Anglo-German artist Tino Sehgal (*1976) is showing a series of six successive works at the Fondation Beyeler. This You (2006) is being presented in the museum’s gardens throughout the summer months while during the period of Art Basel the work entitled Instead of allowing some thing to rise up to your face dancing bruce and dan and other things (2000) is on show in Room 3 of “Beyeler Collection / Remix”, where it is being exhibited together with works by Francis Bacon. Sehgal’s constructed situations−as he calls his works−are enacted by “interpreters”. The works are immaterial and fleeting; what counts is the experiencing of the situation itself. The starting point for the Tino Sehgal exhibition is his work This You, which was acquired for the collection two years ago. Museum in the new park – The Fondation Beyeler’s extension project June 10 – 18, 2017 Exclusively for the duration of Art Basel, the extension project submitted by Atelier Peter Zumthor will be presented in Room 8 of the exhibition “Beyeler Collection / Remix“. The architect’s original plans and models as well as a projection with visualizations explain what is envisaged for the adjacent Iselin- Weber-Park. Special Events at the Fondation Beyeler Book launch & “Artist Talk” with Elena Filipovic and Tino Sehgal Thursday, June 15, 2017, 11 – 12 am To mark the recent publication of the book Felix Gonzalez-Torres: Specific Objects Without Specific Form, the author, curator and director of Kunsthalle Basel, Elena Filipovic, will be in conversation with the artist Tino Sehgal. The talk will be in English. Attendance is included in the price of museum admission. Artist Talk with Wilhelm Sasnal Friday, June 16, 2017, 5 – 6 pm The collection of the Fondation Beyeler includes a representative selection of ten oil paintings by the artist Wilhelm Sasnal who, for the first time, has a room devoted to him in the “Remix” exhibition. To mark the occasion, Theodora Vischer, Senior Curator at the Fondation Beyeler, will hold a talk with him. Wilhelm Sasnal (*1972) addresses day-to-day life in his extensive body of paintings; his multi-faceted pictorial models include a sketch of a mundane observation, a family photograph, films, comics and press photographs. The talk will be in English. Attendance is included in the price of museum admission. Monet, Mondrian, Rothko – The Fondation Beyeler at Art Basel 2017 This year, the Fondation Beyeler is presenting three outstanding artists from its collection on its stand at Art Basel: Claude Monet, Piet Mondrian and Mark Rothko. The dialog between three masterpieces by these protagonists of Modernism will illustrate key stages in the development of abstract art. Those stages extend from Monet’s groundbreaking La cathédrale de Rouen from 1894 via Mondrian’s radical Composition No. VI, Compositie 9 (Blue Façade) from 1914 to Rothko’s powerful Blue and Gray from 1962. Through the theme of the façade, the juxtaposition of these three major paintings charts the transition from the gradual dissolution of the pictorial subject in Monet to the pictorial motif’s rigorous reduction to individual lines and expanses of paint in Mondrian, culminating in Rothko’s concentrated color-field painting, in which the canvas itself seems to become the façade. The presentation on this year’s Art Basel stand alludes to the highly successful “Claude Monet” exhibition held at the Fondation Beyeler in the early months of 2017, celebrating the artist as a pioneer of abstraction. At the same time, the choice of paintings, with its concentration on the color blue, is a homage to the museum’s founders Ernst and Hildy Beyeler, who in 1993/94, in their legendary gallery in Basel, organized one of their famous color exhibitions under the title Magic Blue, which explored the importance of blue for modern art. Around 200 photographic works dating from 1986 to 2017 will be on show from May 28 to October 1, together with a new audiovisual installation. Following an invitation from the Fondation Beyeler in 2014, on which occasion the artist installed two of his own works in a room with paintings and sculptures from the Beyeler Collection, this summer’s exhibition with Wolfgang Tillmans marks the first comprehensive engagement with the medium of photography at the Fondation Beyeler.

In a quarter of canvases huge enough to catch one’s eye at the Worker’s Stadium in Peking, Warhol has located the chairman in some otherworldly blue heaven, a secular deity of staggering dimensions who calmly and omnipotently watches over us earthlings” Robert Rosenblum Mao, Andy Warhol, 1972 Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale November 15, 2006 New York – On November 15, Christie’s New York will offer Andy Warhol’s Mao, the most important and iconic painting by the artist to come to auction for over a decade, and recognized as one of the finest examples of Warhol’s greatest and most sensational series of the 1970’s. This Page 1 of 3 extremely rare masterpiece is being sold by the Swiss-based Daros Collection and is expected to realize in excess of $12 million. “This is one of the most exciting and spectacular landmark events for the red hot Warhol market,” said Brett Gorvy, Deputy Chairman and International Co-Head of Post-War and Contemporary Art. “This work has the most prestigious provenance, staggering wall-power and is literally an icon of the 20th century. Warhol wryly marries the omnipotent image of a Communist God, as propagated by the state controlled Chinese propaganda apparatus, with the drag-queen decadence of the mass- consumer culture that Warhol epitomized and glorified.
