In a UK Government briefing paper [1] the research mapped bank branch closures against the British Bankers Association postcode lending data, They showed that “bank branch closures dampen SME lending growth by 63% on average in postcodes that lose a bank branch. This figures grows to 104% for postcodes that lose their last-bank-in- town. On average, postcodes that lose their last-bank-in-town receive almost £1.6million less lending over the course of a year - a significant and damaging drop in funding.” But, lending is not the only story; shopping footfall decreases and small traders also suffer lost revenue. An important point here is that these small traders like the fishmonger, butcher and greengrocers have a short supply chain so when the snow came suddenly on two recent occasions it was these small traders that were providing food for their respective communities when the so-called “big beasts” of retail had lorries stuck on the various motorways.

    www.junipergreen300.com The Montgomery Family 1901 - 1977 This is the story of members of the Montgomery Family who were residents in Juniper Green from 1901 to 1977 The first member was Alexander Robertson Montgomery who was born 1874 in Pilrig, Edinburgh. His parents were James Montgomery from Humbie, East Lothian and Jessie Robertson from Currie. He had an elder brother James who was born 1871 in Edinburgh. Alexander and his brother spent the early part of their life in Edinburgh but moved to Chester a later date when their mother set up home with her new husband John Hood after James Montgomery had died. The family came back to Edinburgh sometime in the 1890s. Alexander qualified as a draughtsman with the Ordnance Survey. His brother James had married Ellen Winward and was a Dairyman at Hunters Tryst Dairy, Oxgangs/Fairmilehead Road for many years. This is now a restaurant. He also had trotting horses that he raced. Towards the end of the 1890s Alexander was transferred back to Chester with his job where he met his wife Eliza Willcock from Penyffordd, near Hawardan, North Wales. She was in service as a ladies maid in a large house in Chester. They married in April 1900 in Chester and straight after the wedding travelled by train to Edinburgh to start their married life together. They first settled in Dalmeny Street where their first child Alexander (known as Alec was born. During 1901 they moved to Juniper Green to live in Pentland Cottage, Woodhall Terrace. A further six children were born there between then and 1911 namely, Walter, Ada, James, Nina, Thomas and Anne.

    No 56 Autumn 2012 Hidden Treasures of the Water of Leith The Water of Leith has a fascinating heritage and this summer we launched a special exhibition and family fun day to celebrate the unique archaeology, geology and industrial heritage of the river. Ulriika and Abi, who have joined us for the summer, spent months researching the history of the river from its source in the Pentland Hills down to Slateford. They created 10 information posters on the following subjects: The River’s Geology, A Tribal Land (early settlements along the river), Ancient Discoveries (celebrating the archaeology of the river), Historic Wonders (the special features, monuments and bridges of the river), and Mill Heritage, which included a collection of all the items made in the mills. Finally the history of the villages of Balerno, Currie, Juniper Green, Colinton and Slateford was revealed. The exhibition was opened on 22nd July along with a special fun day, which formed part of the British Festival of Archaeology. Around 100 visitors enjoyed the day and were treated to many fun ‘historical’ activities. We created a Bronze Age camp in the Dells complete with fire lighting from flint, an authentic shelter, hunting games and creating nettle string. Visitors could try their hand at Archaeology on a dig, metal detecting, and fossil hunting near Bogs Bridge. At the Centre visitors tried their hands at ancient crafts, grinding grain into flour and could dress up in Bronze-Aged costumes courtesy of Historic Scotland. We had expertise from Edinburgh Geological Society and Archaeology Scotland, and lots of help from our volunteers and staff who all helped to make it a really special day.
