The Week takes place under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and it is organized by the entire network of Italian Embassies and Italian Cultural Institutes around the world in collaboration with all the Italian Trade Agencies, Italian Chambers of Commerce, the by the Italian Academy of Cuisine, as well as top Italian restaurants, chefs, wine distributors and producers, all of whom are true ambassadors of Italian gastronomic excellence abroad. The rich programme of the events includes thematic menus, gala dinners, seminars, food and wine tastings as well as film screenings illustrating how Italian food has become part of the history of cinema. With Italy ranking first in Europe in quality certified food products and being the world’s top wine producer, the International Week of Italian Cuisine is a well deserved occasion to celebrate the richness and excellence of Italy’s culinary traditions. ITALIAN AMBASSADOR’S INTERNATIONAL WEEK OF ITALIAN CUISINE WELCOME ADDRESS 21 NOVEMBER - 27 NOVEMBER 2016 Welcome Address It would not be trite or simplistic to say that culture is defined also by food and culinary traditions. Food, while ancestrally linked to a territory and its people, is almost immediately synonymous with “home”. From the dawn of time, human beings have cherished the flavours, smells and ingredients produced and prepared in their place of birth. Italy has been blessed by a fertile land and a long and rich history that can boast an incredible variety of products, regional traditions and a bounty of fresh ingredients. As a result, Italian cuisine has flourished through the centuries and has gained international fame and appreciation. It is no surprise then that Italy now ranks first in Europe for the number of “quality certified food products”. Moreover, Italy remains the top wine producer in the world while it ranks second in the world for the number 4 of Award-winning restaurants. As a celebration of its distinctive food culture and as an homage to Italian fine dining, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched a special week featuring over one thousand events worldwide, ranging from food- themed film retrospectives, talks, cooking demonstrations, presentations on the Italian Mediterranean diet, tastings and of course special menus in top Italian restaurants around the world. The incredible number of events that will take place during this Week has been a joint effort by 130 diplomatic offices, 80 Italian Cultural Institutes, 70 Italian Trade Agencies, the local Chapters of the Accademia della Cucina italiana, the Italian Chamber of Commerce network, and of course the thousands of Italian restaurants abroad which are registered with the Accademia, or under the “Ospitalita’ Italiana” brand, as well as the 14 delegations of the Italian Chef Federation. Participating restaurants in each country have been asked to present special menus designed specifically for the occasion. The International Week of Italian Cuisine is part of The Extraordinary Italian Taste, a new project to promote Italian culinary excellence worldwide. I would like to thank all the entities, restaurants, sponsors, Italian organizations and participants that have contributed to offer Singaporeans an entire week to enjoy not only the best of Italian food, but also the deep culture and quality behind Italy’s gastronomic tradition. Hosted by tolerant and relaxed Flora, various people come in -- large and small, young and old, regulars and tourists, married and single -- to dine, converse, argue, celebrate, make confessions; to overhear other people’s discussions, to interrupt them, to sing, listen to music, and enjoy life. The camera, just like the people, moves constantly from table to table, into the kitchen and the back room to observe the staff’s petty jealousies and frustrations -- until two hours later it’s time for everybody to go home. Hardly an exciting place. Gabriele, Marco and Nicola are three youngsters, who would like to shoot a movie. They interview an old lady, who recalls the love of her life, a distant cousin of hers who emigrated to America as a young man, whose return she is still waiting for. Indeed, a suitable plot for a movie. Neri is a former film director who shot one successful movie and then retired to Diamante. They ask for his help, in vain though. So they decide to travel to Rome, and Elena, Marco’s sister, goes with them. Here, Francesco, a friend of Neri’s, unwillingly accommodates them. They end up getting involved in the TV showbiz rather than cinema, and realize it’s not that bad after all. However, they meet Amelie, a French, girl, who seems to be interested in their intent, and tells them she will mention it to Gerard, her fiancé, who actually turns out to be Gerard Depardieu, the renowned French actor... Could this be the turning point for them?
