For this year's issue it was an explicit objectiveto reinforcethe TFConference as a forumfor scientificwork dedicated to TRIZrelated research, while preserving the strongpractitioners involvement. tr This dual goal is reflectedin the two volumesof the proceedings, one part being dedicatedto more theoreticresearch contributions and a secondvolume being reservedfor relevantpractitioner experience. The papersin thisvolume have been submitted to a rigorousscreening and review ltl by membersof the InternationalScientific Committee. This committee, composed of internationallyreputed academicsactive in the field of design theory and methodology, was instrumentalin assuringthe quali$of thisconference output. We tl wouldlike to thankthe committeemembers for theirvaluable feedback. However. withoutthe dedicatedeffort of all contributingauthors these conference proceedings ltl wouldbe butan emptyshell. As authoryour contribution is greatlyappreciated. Guaranteeinghigh quality proceedings is only possible through the logistical support of dedicatedpeople: we wouldlike to acknowledgethe significantefforts invested by TomDevoldere, Joris D'hondt and Nele Dekeyser in thisrespect: sincere thanks on behalfof the editorsand the completeorganising committee for makingthese proceedingsprint ready. Printinghard copies of proceedingshas becomeless obvious in this digitalage. However, the organisingcommittee is convincedthat having a papercopy at handis beneficialfor the efficiencyof conferenceattendance. Furthermore, the availabilityof hard copiesreinforces the more permanentcharacter envisaged for the valuable researchcontributions communicated at the TFConference.lt is our sincerehope thatyou will benefitfrom this book, both during the conferenceand as a referencein the yearsto come. Wishingyou a productiveand enjoyable conference Prof.Joost Duflou Mr.Simon Dewulf TFC2006Academic Host TFC2006Industrial Host -il- PRernce:ETRIA's NExr ( S > cuRve After six years of existence, ETRIA has taken a curvethese last monthsin applying an evident rule: evolution through better harmonizationwith its super system. While TRIZ is sought to be an unavoidable ingredientof organization'sstrategies when facing the difficultiesof Innovation'sera, we can observe paradoxicallya stronger reject from formal authoritieslike politicalsystems, scientific communities and management voices of authority. To remain clear, popularity of TRIZ grows as much as unpopularity.Which role does ETRIAneed to play in this conflictingand unpleasant situation?Since our aim and commoninterest resides in a betterharmony with the world, let's understandwhich reproachesare made to TRIZ and react. 1. Lackof clearlyexpressed theoretical foundations, avoiding a scientifical acceptancein existingcommunities; 2. Lack of clearly defined and worldwide recognizedbody of knowledge that leads to fuzziness, misinterpretationsand consequent reduced usability. This image fortunately not shared by everyone, impacts significantly on management'sdecisions regarding investment in relationwith TRIZ and in certain countriesis slowingdown the processof TRIZ disseminationand evolution. To face this situationand evolve,ETRIA has decidedto move in two paralleldirections. The first one is a more scientificallygrounded evaluation of its contributionto the world; the second is to participateto the definitionof TRIZ's body of knowledgetogether with two other majorworldwide associations. To achieve the first objective, worldwide reference researchers in scientifically establishedcommunities of EngineeringDesign have been contactedand invitedto join and constituteTFC2006 scientific committee. As a result,a significantreviewing has been made throughoutcontributions and led to the constitutionof two parallel sessions in the coming conference (Professional experience and scientifically aimed). To play an importantrole in the second,a workinggroup has been constitutedand will interactwith these other worldwideentities for a wider recognitionof TRIZ's body of knowledge. In order to provokethe possibilityfor the main actors of the TRIZ communityto cooperateand evolve in their mutual understanding, hopefully resulting in an interestingparadigm shift for everyone,ETRIA's contributorshave shown this year their opennessto be evaluatedby their peers, their opennessto criticismand their capacityto learn from others;those who are buildingthe world's most significant -ilt- advancesin engineeringdesign and industrialorganizations from all over the world havingsignificant successes in TRIZ implementation. we are confidentthat improvingquality and validity of the work presentedat ETRIA'sconference is an importantstep towards a more generalacknowledgement of TRIZ both in the scientificand in the industrialworld. Eventually this will positively impactTRIZ effectivenessand usability. Indeed,we hope that this step will result in more open doors for being integrated with others, debating and contributing, using TRIZ, to the evolutionof our capacityto apprehendInnovation era's difficulties.
