Campers who attended Art Camp had their artwork displayed in an exhibit at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, while campers were able to interact with reptiles, parrots, and butterflies at the South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center camp. Campers ages 13-17 helped create and install murals within the La Palmera Mall and downtown Corpus Christi as part of K Space Contemporary’s summer camp. The experiences at every summer camp helped the campers develop important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and problem-solving, which can be used in all areas of study.

12 Estate of Gustave Jones McFarland

In April 2019, Gustave Jones McFarland passed away leaving a portion of his estate to Coastal Bend Community Foundation. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma he moved to Corpus Christi at age ten. He then joined the military in 1943 where he was part of the 188th Division 5th Army. Upon graduating with his Bachelor of Science in 1951 from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, he returned to work with his father as an oil and gas land broker in Corpus Christi. He was also the President of the Cuba Plantation Company, which his grandfather purchased in 1905. Gus revisited the plantation in 1946 before it was seized by Castro in 1959. Later in life, he married Margorie McNeill and they made many memories together. He was an avid reader, enjoying tapes from the Texas State Library Program and was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Corpus Christi, two of his other favorite organizations, which also received proceeds from his estate.

The Coastal Bend Community Foundation has been giving back to the community since shortly after its formation in 1981. We assist donors to give grants and scholarships that help Coastal Bend residents improve their lives and the lives of the people around them. The Foundation looks to the future to better prepare for the growing needs of our ever-changing community. We have grown tremendously in the past 38 years thanks to the generosity of our donors. We plan to continue to grow and to give for as long as the community and our nonprofit partners need us.

Coastal Bend Community Foundation would like to recognize MDR for their generous in-kind donation to design this annual report.
