In this ground-breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway. A study of these stage works is important for the light they shine on a variety of social topics of the period – from modernity and gender relations to new technology and new media – and these are investigated in the individual chapters. In case of abuse or copyright appearing without permission e-mail [email protected] 1 THE ARTIST BIOPIC: A HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF NARRATIVE CINEMA, 1934-2010 DAVID ALLAN BOVEY A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Westminster for the degree of Master of Philosophy December 2015 2 ABSTRACT The thesis provides an historical overview of the artist biopic that has emerged as a distinct sub-genre of the biopic as a whole, totalling some ninety films from Europe and America alone since the first talking artist biopic in 1934. Their making usually reflects a determination on the part of the director or star to see the artist as an alter-ego. Many of them were adaptations of successful literary works, which tempted financial backers by having a ready-made audience based on a pre-established reputation. The sub-genre’s development is explored via the grouping of films with associated themes and the use of case studies. -

7. Palaces Of Entertainment Escapism coupled with fantasy In 1919 cinema audiences reached a million a week with many “going to the pictures’ twice a week. Attendances rocketed with 987 million tickets sold in 1938. At one billion attendances, cinema was 25 times more popular than association football. The survey showed that 50% of the population went at least once a week; some went two, three or even four times. Only 12% of twelve year olds had never been to a cinema that by now had a magnetic attraction. An imposing façade, opulent interior, main film, giants of screen with their good looks, sex- appeal and humour, a B movie and newsreel interspersed – guaranteed a great night out, or better still two or even more. By 1939 weekly cinema audiences exceeded 23 million. Whilst the government regulated hours of opening for adults and juveniles, content was left to the British Board of Film Censors, established in 1912. Saturday morning children’s shows took hold. Sunday opening was a thorny issue and a closing time of 4.30 pm was common. The Board’s obligation was to “respect good taste and decency” with self-imposed limitations about extremes or excess, and films which might deprave, offend or corrupt. The Board set out 43 rules, of which all but ten concerned morality, defined as reference to bodily functions, coarse language and sex. Subjects dealing with ‘capitalist’ and labour, including strikes and poverty, were banned as being too political and controversial. Going to the theatre was a social event with evening dress expected in the stalls and dress circle. -

IV: THE ALLAN WILKIE SHAKESPEAREAN COMPANY, 1920-1926 "Our True Intent is all for Your Delight." In September 1920, Allan Wilkie announced his plans to establish Australia's first permanent Shakespearean company, drawing a parallel to Frank Benson's Company in England. The inaugural production by the new Allan Wilkie Shakespearean Company was to be a "new arrangement" of Macbeth, and Wilkie gave it as his fixed intention to produce all thirty-seven of Shakespeare's plays, some of which had never previously been staged in Australia." Advance publicity emphasized the potentially historic nature of the occasion: When in future years this company will be counted one of the institutions of which Australia is proud, those who attend on the opening night will tell with satisfaction how they were present during the enthusiastic hours which saw the inception of the company [Argus, 9 September 1920]. Many cynics were quick to point out the unlikelihood of Wilkie's venture surviving for long, or even getting off the ground, in view of the history of Shakespeare production in Australia. His was by no means the first proposal to establish a permanent company, but lack of demand had ended all previous efforts. In order to arouse audience curiosity, Wilkie advertised, as mentioned above, a "new arrangement" of Macbeth. His presentation was to have two novel aspects, which were to form the basis of his production methods in the years to come. They were interdependent: first, a new method of scenic arrangement, and second, a new organisation of the play, made possible by simplified scenery. -

Apart from reasonable weather, two of the most significant events for me marked an early opening of Spring EDITORIAL long before an Easter chick was a wink in a cockerel’s eye. Out of the blue came a charming invitation from Julian Clary for the officers of the Society to visit The Old Manor - but forever Goldenhurst in the eye of the Coward faithful - for lunch and a celebration of the completed renovation of Noël’s country retreat in Kent and the publication of Julian’s novel Briefs Encountered. As Daniel Massey said once about an invitation to Noël’s for lunch, “Well, you don’t turn that down!” And we didn’t! More on the visit in this edition. The climax of the month was the opening of Star Quality - The World of Noël Coward at the Lincoln Center in New York. This exhibition has been rightly trumpeted in Home Chat for the past few editions and the result did not let the herald down. This really is an impressive achievement. As a result of an initial partnership between the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts (NYPL) and The Noël Coward Foundation (NCF) the idea was born - and together with other partners - the exhibition was created. -

The thesis goes beyond the similarity of the shared name of the two monarchs; it shows the major changes not only in the way of portraying a queen but also in the way in which the public has changed its perception of the monarch and of the monarchy. Elizabeth I aimed to unite a nation by focusing the eye upon herself, while Elizabeth II triumphed through humanity and informality.
