Real generosity toward the future lies in giving to the present. – Albert Camus

One of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of working at an art museum is the staff exhibition planning meetings. From working out upcoming logistics, pitching new concepts, and developing programming ideas, it’s all hands on the creative deck. It’s at this moment this talented staff considers what we have done, where we are, and what we want to achieve; a rare opportunity to exist in the past, present and future simultaneously.

The future is not a gamble. The future is something you design today. We all do this every day through financial planning, career goals, and, institutionally, through strategic planning.

For the past year, the Trustees and Staff of the MMA have been thinking hard about the sustainability of the Muskegon Museum of Art for the next century. The MMA is in a good place today. We want to make sure we remain remarkable for generations to come.

But in the near term, get ready next summer for a spectacular immersive exhibition for the senses along with a major showcase of our incredible permanent collection.

Winter at the MMA warms up with Excellence in Fibers, a national juried exhibition featuring the cutting edge of fiber arts. In addition, the Art of Making is a well-curated glimpse into the MMA’s permanent and fiber collection and 20 for 20 showcases the incredible diversity of Michigan children’s book illustrators.

These shows are all surrounded by engaging programming and events, all detailed here in your winter MMA Journal.

The future is looking exciting and bright at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Stay tuned.

From this show, by purchase and gift, the Muskegon Museum of Art acquired the paintings of three of the artists—Dorielle Caimi, Mary Henderson, and Jenny Morgan—bringing an exciting new perspective to our holdings. Each of these artists has received national and international attention prior to The Bennett Prize, making this an exciting opportunity to help propel their careers while adding a dynamic modern flavor to our galleries. Each of the three artists brings to her work imagery that speaks to our current visual culture in order to directly address issues relating to self-identity, the portrayal of the female body, how we relate to other people privately and collectively, and the pervasive influence of social media.

By gift from Steven Bennett and Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt, the founders of The Bennett Prize, we received Mary Henderson’s stunning crowd scene Winter Coats, depicting HIGHLIGHT COLLECTION a crowd of women in an examination of how people join as groups and are moved to collective action (pictured on the cover and page 2).
