The Boston Red Sox Saturday, April 1, 2017 * The Boston Globe Ben Taylor makes Red Sox’ Opening Day roster Nick Cafardo WASHINGTON — Rainy days aren’t so bad after all. While the Red Sox-Nationals exhibition game at Nationals Park was postponed Friday, the sound of the rain was like a symphony to Ben Taylor. The hard-throwing youngster who impressed with his poise and stuff throughout spring training will be the 12th pitcher on the staff when the Red Sox open against the Pirates Monday in Boston. Taylor, 24, made it because Tyler Thornburg, Drew Pomeranz, and David Price are starting the season on the disabled list. The Red Sox could have gone with a more seasoned pitcher such as Noe Ramirez, but the brass huddled during the rain delay and made the call. Taylor made the team as a nonroster invitee, which is rare. “I was very surprised,” said Taylor. “I came into camp not really expecting to make the team, but all the pieces fell into place. Perfect timing. “I’ve been feeling really good this spring. All my pitches have been working really well. I’m throwing the ball well and it paid off.” Manager John Farrell was impressed by the righthander’s 19 strikeouts over 13 innings, but more important, he said, “It was the poise and mound presence he showed as a young pitcher.” Taylor’s time with the major league team could be short-lived, depending on when Thornburg is ready, but who knows? “The hope is always to make the big league club,” Taylor said.

  • Applying Matching Equation to Pitch Selection in Major League Baseball
APPLYING MATCHING EQUATION TO PITCH SELECTION IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL __________________________________________________________________ A Thesis Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Masters of Education in Applied Behavior Analysis __________________________________________________________________ David Dragone August 2018 Examining Committee Members: Donald Hantula, Ph.D., Thesis Advisor, Department of Psychology Matt Tincani, Ph. D., BCBA-D, Department of Education Amanda Guld Fisher, Ph. D., BCBA-D, College of Education ABSTRACT This study applied the generalized matching equation (GME) to pitch selection in MLB during the 2016 regular season. The GME was used to evaluate the pitch selection of 21 groups of pitchers as well as 144 individual pitchers. The GME described pitch selection well for four of the 21 pitching groups and 32 of the 144 individual pitchers. Of the remaining groups and individual pitchers, behavior may be explained by rule following behavior or be impacted by distant reinforcers such as salary. All 21 groups demonstrated a bias for fastballs as well as 119 of the 144 individual pitchers. The results extend the use of the GME to natural contexts and suggest an alternative view to evaluating pitchers. KEYWORDS: general matching theory, general matching equation, sports, baseball, reinforcement ii DEDICATION This study is dedicated to the countless number of people who have supported me throughout the years both in this degree and professionally. Thank you, to my wife, Jen, and Children, Aurora and Rose, who gave me the motivation to keep working through this process and seeing it through to the end. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Dr.

  • 2012 Rockies Minor League Preview
1 | P a g e Statement/Acknowledgements/Disclaimer Following a minor league system is endlessly fulfilling. Whether your big league team is competing for a division title or the first overall draft pick, there is always a minor league team and several prospects in every organization worth following. There is always someone to dream on, and in that way, it keeps that often short-lived spring optimism alive year-round. While minor league coverage is increasing constantly, it is still difficult to get involved cold. Here is your preview on all four minor league affiliates and the most notable prospects at each level. Every player in the system is above the Mensa level of baseball talent in the world. It feels insulting to leave out most players or to summarize an impact prospect in three inches of a column. On the other hand, this preview is 21 pages long and nearly 6500 words. I have not seen every player in this report with my own eyes, but I have seen a few of them. I relied on scouting reports from Baseball Prospectus, Baseball America, John Sickels, and other contacts I have made in prospect dialogue. Some information behind paywalls is alluded to but never excerpted directly. I also need to thank Greg Stanwood and Tim Zappe constructing and maintaining RockiesRoster.com, and to Mike Sjerven and Charlie Drysdale for letting me steal their pictures to provide color. Field diagrams were taken from each affiliate’s website, and park factors were taken from StatCorner.com. Team logos featured in this report are the registered trademarks of each featured organization.

The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, May 8, 2018 * The Boston Globe Red Sox’ Joe Kelly expects to be booed at Yankee Stadium Tuesday Peter Abraham NEW YORK — Joe Kelly has been with the Red Sox since 2014. He knows what’s coming the first time he sticks his head out of the visitor’s dugout at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. If he’s lucky, it’ll just be boos. “Maybe I’ll need an umbrella,” Kelly said. “I hope nothing gets thrown or poured on us.” Kelly and the Sox will be at the Stadium for the first time since the benches-clearing brawl between the teams on April 11 at Fenway Park. It’s the start of a three-game series with the best records in baseball. One of the many sub-plots involves Kelly and Yankees infielder Tyler Austin. Austin made an over-aggressive slide into Sox shortstop Brock Holt in the third inning on April 11, spiking him in the leg. When Austin came to the plate in the seventh inning, Kelly drilled him in the back with a fastball. Austin took exception and charged the mound. “Let’s go,” said Kelly when he saw what was happening. A legitimate fight ensued. Kelly was suspended for six games, losing an appeal for a reduced sentence. Austin was suspended for five games and on appeal had one game taken away. Now Yankees fans get their say. “I just hope people don’t throw stuff in the bullpen. Say whatever you want and be loud. That’ll be fine,” Kelly said.
