While the Red Sox-Nationals exhibition game at Nationals Park was postponed Friday, the sound of the rain was like a symphony to Ben Taylor. The hard-throwing youngster who impressed with his poise and stuff throughout spring training will be the 12th pitcher on the staff when the Red Sox open against the Pirates Monday in Boston. Taylor, 24, made it because Tyler Thornburg, Drew Pomeranz, and David Price are starting the season on the disabled list. The Red Sox could have gone with a more seasoned pitcher such as Noe Ramirez, but the brass huddled during the rain delay and made the call. Taylor made the team as a nonroster invitee, which is rare. “I was very surprised,” said Taylor. “I came into camp not really expecting to make the team, but all the pieces fell into place. Perfect timing. “I’ve been feeling really good this spring. All my pitches have been working really well. I’m throwing the ball well and it paid off.” Manager John Farrell was impressed by the righthander’s 19 strikeouts over 13 innings, but more important, he said, “It was the poise and mound presence he showed as a young pitcher.” Taylor’s time with the major league team could be short-lived, depending on when Thornburg is ready, but who knows? “The hope is always to make the big league club,” Taylor said.

D., BCBA-D, Department of Education Amanda Guld Fisher, Ph. D., BCBA-D, College of Education ABSTRACT This study applied the generalized matching equation (GME) to pitch selection in MLB during the 2016 regular season. The GME was used to evaluate the pitch selection of 21 groups of pitchers as well as 144 individual pitchers. The GME described pitch selection well for four of the 21 pitching groups and 32 of the 144 individual pitchers. Of the remaining groups and individual pitchers, behavior may be explained by rule following behavior or be impacted by distant reinforcers such as salary. All 21 groups demonstrated a bias for fastballs as well as 119 of the 144 individual pitchers. The results extend the use of the GME to natural contexts and suggest an alternative view to evaluating pitchers. Whether your big league team is competing for a division title or the first overall draft pick, there is always a minor league team and several prospects in every organization worth following. There is always someone to dream on, and in that way, it keeps that often short-lived spring optimism alive year-round. While minor league coverage is increasing constantly, it is still difficult to get involved cold. Here is your preview on all four minor league affiliates and the most notable prospects at each level. Every player in the system is above the Mensa level of baseball talent in the world. It feels insulting to leave out most players or to summarize an impact prospect in three inches of a column. On the other hand, this preview is 21 pages long and nearly 6500 words. I have not seen every player in this report with my own eyes, but I have seen a few of them. I relied on scouting reports from Baseball Prospectus, Baseball America, John Sickels, and other contacts I have made in prospect dialogue. Some information behind paywalls is alluded to but never excerpted directly.
