A Few Words from the Chairmen

The 37th Annual Southtowns Walleye Association Derby is here and we are thankful for your participation and are extremely excited and proud to bring you one of the largest derbies on the Great Lakes. We hope this year you will support all of our great sponsors, many of them have seen significant impacts from the pandemic and need our critical support more now than ever. Please patronize them and give them your busi- ness, without them we would not have this great event.

As you know, each year we strive to bring you the best possible experi- ence for a fishing event and this year is no exception. We have worked tirelessly to bring you great sponsor prizes and at the same time some new items such as our Champions Bounty Fish and the NY Waters only Calcutta in an effort to make things more competitive and fun for every- one.

The weigh stations are staffed by our great volunteers. Their responsibil- ity is to enter your prize fish into the books following the procedures set forth by the Derby Committee. Please treat these volunteers with respect and show your gratitude. This treatment will not get you a bigger weight, but it will help to ensure that they continue to volunteer. Remember you are a representative of our club when you enter this event and become a member, please be respectful at all times. We hope that every single person enjoys the derby and the experience of fishing.

It is the responsibility of all entrants to thoroughly read all of our derby rules and abide by them. If you have any concerns please call one of the chairmen listed below or the Office Derby Hotline 716.649.8237

We would like to thank all of our participants and sponsors for making this year’s derby a memorable event for everyone. Please be safe on the water, enjoy yourself and show good sportsmanship.

Good luck and Tight Lines to All!

This year we are implementing a new protest rule. A form can be requested from Jim (716-796-5372) or Brian (716-225-7055) to submit your protest. It is to be utilized in the event of any legally participating angler wishing to submit a formal protest of any wrong-doing against the official rules and regulations of the derby by another legally participating angler.

The protesting angler is required to pay a $200.00 (US Funds) protest fee to initiate the review of the situation presented. Upon final determination of the investigation, should the angler under speculation be found guilty (confirmed of the wrong doing); the $200.00 protest fee will be returned to the submitting angler. In the event the process proves the angler under speculation is innocent (confirmed free of any wrong doing) the $200.00 protest fee will be forfeited and put in the Derby fund.

Any and all information/evidence collected in this report, will be utilized and reviewed in a complete and impartial, equal, and unbiased manner; taking no sides of either party. The protest will be based on the current reading of the rules and how they apply to the situation presented.

The official determination of the protest by the Derby officials (to include our licensed polygraph administrator if required) will be considered final and closed.

All information and conclusions will be held in complete confidence between the Derby officials and both parties.

Who we are: The original mission of the Southtowns Walleye Association of WNY was to put an end to the overharvesting of walleye, also known as yellow pike, by commercial fishermen on Lake Erie. Established in 1985, over 600 members joined and were successful in having gill netting banned and have walleye designated as a game fish in New York.

Those initial efforts have grown over the years into a community based not-for-profit organization that promotes conservation of all species in the lake and ecosystem, education of our youth, boating safety, ensur- ing access to Lake Erie, and promotion of this region as a premier tourist destination.

Membership benefits include:

• Our website which includes valuable information, events, forms and news. • Monthly meetings which provide speakers on fishing tech- niques increase catch rates, safe boating, information on conservation, under harvesting fish and toxic waters. Along with updates on local marinas and boat launches in WNY. • A family-oriented program which stresses the need to bring youth into our fishery and educate them on conservation • Seminars which provide better knowledge in the use of newer techniques for walleye fishing • Junior members pay a one-time fee of $10 to join the associa- tion and be eligible to fish the Junior division of the derby until they reach the age of 16. • Regular membership (ages 16 and up) $50 annually • Water-related activities without damaging our resources or the environment
