Being part of the GLTA allows you to experience the excitement of competition while meeting many new people and making friends from across the country all over the world. Also, a the Liberty Open you will experience playing tennis in the only GLTA tournament hosted on the grounds of a Grand Slam venue, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (NTC), the home of the US Open! In addition to having great tennis in a remarkable venue, The Liberty Open is also a charity event. For the 2017 event, all net proceeds go to our designated charity, The Trevor Project: Saving Young Lives. Founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®–winning short film Trevor, The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13–24. The Trevor Project saves young lives through its accredited, free and confidential phone, instant message and text messaging crisis intervention services. A leader and innovator in suicide prevention, The Trevor Project offers the largest safe social networking community for LGBTQ youth, best practice suicide prevention educational trainings, resources for youth and adults, and advocacy initiatives. We have some great raffle prizes and we will certain work hard to raise funds to support to LGBTQ youth through The Trevor Project. As with most summer tournaments, it will likely get hot on court so please remember to drink plenty of fluids. Players will receive a bottle of water for each match and there will be filtered water dispensers and courtside coolers available for refills. We are so glad to have the returning players and are excited for the first-timers to join us for what will certainly be a great weekend. The boardwalk outside the subway exit directly leads to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. DIRECTIONS BY CAR: From Manhattan: Midtown Tunnel (34th Street/2nd Ave.) to Long Island Expressway East (495). Exit at Grand Central Pkwy West. Stay in right lane. Exit at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. PLEASE NOTE: Parking Lot B by the indoor facility is under construction, please use Parking Lot A. Check in at West Gate, and identify yourself as part of the tournament. (SEE MAP ON PAGE 2) FOOD: Light breakfast (bagels, etc.) Lunch will be provided Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday STRINGING: On-site racquet stringing will be available in the NTC Pro Shop. WATER: One bottle of water will be given to each player per match. There will be water coolers on each court. LOCKER ROOMS: Locker rooms and showers will be available. TOWELS: Limited towel service will be provided. PLEASE: NO PETS ARE ALLOWED PER THE NATIONAL TENNIS CENTER POLICIES. TOURNAMENT FORMAT The format of play for each division will depend on the number of players/teams entered. If you have any question on how or why the format is being used, please see Stuart Levy. Draws with more than 8 players/teams: Single elimination. Singles will have a consolation draw for first-match losers. Each match will be the best of 2 out of 3 tie-break sets with a standard tie break at 6 games all. A 10-point super tie break will be played in lieu of a 3rd set. The finals will be the best 2 out of 3 tie-break sets with a standard tie break at 6 games all. (Once a tie break has been played in either of the first two sets, the player who serves the first point of the tie break will receive serve to start the next set.) Consolation matches will be 8-game pro-sets (with a standard (first to 7 by 2) tie break at 8-games all), except the final which will be the best 2 out of 3 tie-break sets. Draws with 6 or 8 players/teams: Will be broken into 2 pools of 4. Round-robin format, with the winner of each pool playing for the championship. Each match will be the best of 2 out of 3 tie- break sets with a standard tie break at 6 games all. A 10-point super tie break will be played in lieu of a 3rd set. The finals will be the best 2 out of 3 tie-break sets with a standard tie break at 6 games all. Draws with 3, 4 or 5 players/teams: Will play a round robin, with each match being the best 2 out of 3 tie-break sets with a standard tie break at 6 games all. A 10-point super tie break will be played in lieu of a 3rd set. Draws with 8 or fewer players/teams (all round robins): The winner(s) will be determined by the players/teams with the best match records. If a tie exists between 2 teams, the winner is determined by the head-to-head result. If a tie exists among 3 teams, the winner will be determined by 1) set win/loss ratio; 2) game win/loss ratio. The player/team with the highest ratio wins. TOURNAMENT RULES & INFORMATION 1. The tournament will follow the USTA tournament rules for MOST aspects of play. 2. You must check in and be ready to play at least 15 minutes prior to the start of your scheduled match regardless of court availability. After check in, please stay within earshot of the tournament desk. Please note that you’ll be defaulted if you are not checked in within 15 minutes after your scheduled match starting time. It is your responsibility to arrange transportation; get directions if necessary and leave enough time to get to the site early. If defaulted, your only recourse is to appeal to the tournament directors, Stuart Levy and/or Albert Cousins, whose decision is FINAL. 3. Proper tennis attire is required when on court. ALL players MUST wear shirts. 4. You will be allowed a five-minute warm-up. 5. There is NO rest period between 2nd and 3rd sets. Players will be allowed a reasonable amount of time for bathroom breaks and to get new balls for the 3rd set. 6. There will be a minimum 30-minute rest period between main draw singles matches and next match. There will be a minimum 15-minute rest period between doubles matches.
