A STATISTICAL COMPARISON OF LANGARA TRANSFER STUDENTS WITH

VANCOUVER COLLEGES SIMILAR IN SIZE

(Capilano, Douglas, Kwantlen, Langara)

The Council on Admissions and Transfer funded a study on the profile of BC College Transfer Students admitted to the , , and to the University of British Columbia. The reports were prepared and produced by staff members at each of the Universities.

All three reports are similar in how the data on Transfer Students is displayed and how it has been traced over a five-year period (SFU & UVic 1994/95 to 1998/99 and UBC 1993/94 to 1997/98). The three reports differ slightly to reflect the different academic structure at each institution. Transfer Students admitted to these universities include BC College Transfers, BC high school entrants, student transfers from other universities, students from out-of-province high schools, foreign students, and mature students. The focus of the reports is on BC College Transfer Students who entered SFU or UVic during the last five years.

The following highlights have been extracted from each of the reports and comparisons between the universities have been made where appropriate. Following the highlights are three sections displaying selected tables and figures from each of the three university reports.

HIGHLIGHTS

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF LANGARA TRANSFERS WHO HAVE GRADUATED

• Although Langara students had the lowest admission average upon arrival at UBC, by the time they completed their last session their average percentage score was higher than the students’ scores from , Kwantlen University College and Capilano College.

• Similar to the UBC results, Langara transfer students to UVic also transferred in with the lowest admission average compared to the other three colleges, but upon graduating from UVic had achieved the highest graduating CGPA.

FIRST SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS

• In their first semester at SFU, the majority of Langara Transfer Students (77.8%) took nine or more credit hours, while only 10.3% took three credit hours or less.

• In comparison to Douglas, and Kwantlen, Langara had more transfer students taking nine or more credits and fewer students taking less than four credits in their first semester. However among these four comparable colleges, Capilano had the

Prepared by the Office of Institutional Research – 1 highest percentage of transfer students taking nine or more credits (79.2%), and slightly fewer students taking less than four credits in their first semester.

DISTRIBUTION OF TRANSFERS BY FACULTY

• UBC figures of Langara Transfer students include VCC numbers in 1993-95. The total number of students transferring into UBC was 1,025 for the reported three years. Of these students, the majority transferred into the Faculty of Arts (59.0%) followed by 12.3% who transferred into the Faculty of Science. Most transfer students from Capilano, Douglas and Kwantlen also entered into the Faculty of Arts at UBC. • At SFU, the largest group of Langara Transfer Students went into the Faculty of Arts (52.4%), followed by 23.9% to Business Administration. Out of all Transfer Students entering the Faculty of Science at SFU, the highest percentage came from Langara College.

• Similar to the student’s faculty choice at UBC, the majority of Langara transfer students to UVic also went into the Faculty of Arts and Science, followed by 32.4% to Health and Social Development.

DISTRIBUTION OF GRADUATES BY PROGRAM

• The largest group of Langara transfer students who graduated from UBC specialized in Psychology (7.2%), followed closely by Finance (6.7%). Findings were similar for Capilano College and Kwantlen University College.

• The largest group of Langara Students (19.4%) who transferred to SFU graduated from the Business Administration Program, followed by 12.9% graduating from Economics, and 9.5% from Psychology.

• The largest groups of Langara Transfer Students admitted to UVic graduated from the Nursing Program (29.1%), followed by 11.3% graduating from Economics, 9.4% from Geography, and 9.4% from Commerce.

AGE DISTRIBUTION

• On average, Langara students admitted to all three universities from 1994/95 to 1998/99 were older than the Transfer Students from other similar colleges were. Slightly over 25% of the Langara Transfer students were 25 years or older.

• The bulk of Langara Transfer students to these three universities were between the ages of 20-25. Langara Transfer students to UVic were slightly older than the

Prepared by the Office of Institutional Research – Langara College 2 Transfer students from Capilano and Kwantlen to UVic, but slightly younger than the students from Douglas.

GENDER DISTRIBUTION

• For the most part, the numbers of female entrants from the Colleges in the study transferring to all three Universities outnumbers the quantity of male entrants. Compared to the other colleges in the study, Langara has a similar percentage breakdown of females and males transferring into these Universities.

Prepared by the Office of Institutional Research – Langara College 3 A SUMMARY OF THE PROFILE OF LANGARA TRANSFER STUDENTS TO UBC

Office of Institutional Research September 2000

HIGHLIGHTS

General Profile • UBC admits between 1,100 and 1,500 students transferring from BC Colleges annually. BC College transfers make up 15% to 20% of all registered undergraduate admissions.

• Langara College supplies UBC with more college transfer students than any other institution. Including enrolments from VCC in 1993-95, Langara students totaled 1,621, 26.0% of all transfers in the five-year period.

• A larger number of Langara transfer students enter UBC as part time students than as full time students. The same is true for Douglas transfer students, but Capilano and Kwantlen have more students who transfer to full-time studies than part-time.

Academic Performance of Langara Transfer Students • 32.3% of most College transfers enter UBC with between one and two years of credit. Students from Langara transferred with greater than 55 credits.

• Langara transfer students, admitted to UBC, on average experienced a slight decrease in measured academic performance (i.e., percentage grade earned) in their first year at UBC (68.2%) relative to their entry grade (70.4%). However, the drop in percentage was partially recovered by the end of the second session (70.0%), and by the end of the last session their academic performance was 1.6 percentage points higher than their entry grade (72.0%).

• The percentage distributions are slightly different for Langara transfer students who graduated from UBC. These students (about 180 students) on average experienced a steady growth in their measured academic performance. Their percentage grades earned increased by 3.4 percentage points from the time of admission (average of 71.3%) to the end of the last session (average of 74.7%).

• Transfer students from Douglas, Capilano, and Kwantlen who graduated from UBC experienced a decrease from admissions to the end of the second session but recovered by the end of the final session. Langara College transfers had the lowest percentage grades at admission, but had the highest by the end of the last session.

Transfer Students by Faculty • The total number of students from Langara transferring into UBC was 1,025 for the reported three years (1996-98). Of these students, the majority transferred into the

Prepared by the Office of Institutional Research – Langara College Faculty of Arts (59.0%) followed by 12.3% who transferred into the Faculty of Science. Most transfer students from Capilano, Douglas and Kwantlen also entered into the Faculty of Arts followed by Sciences. Douglas was a slight exception with a larger number of students transferring into the Faculty of Human Kinetics than the Faculty of Science.

Distribution of Graduates by Program • The largest group of Langara transfer students who graduated from UBC specialized in Psychology (7.2%), followed closely by Finance (6.7%). Findings were similar for Capilano and Kwantlen Colleges. Most students from Douglas College who graduated from UBC specialized in Human Kinetics (18.1%).

Age and Gender of Transfer Students • Overall, Langara Students admitted to UBC over the 5-year period were slightly older than the Transfer students from other similar colleges. About 29% of the Langara Transfer students were 25 years or older.

• Over the 5-year period, Langara had the second lowest percentage of females (55.1%) in comparison to the other five colleges and the 2nd highest percentage of males (44.9%) as Transfer students (Capilano had the lowest percentage of female, 51.0%, and the highest percentage of males, 49.0%).

• Overall, of the students transferring to UBC, female entrants outnumbered male entrants among the four comparing institutions. The slightly higher female-to-male ratio of the transfer students admitted into UBC has been fairly consistent across the Lower Mainland and the Province in general. BCIT and University College of the Fraser Valley are exceptions to this finding with a larger percent of males transferring to UBC than females (BCIT 31.0% female and 69.0% male, UCFV 47.6% female, and 52.4% male).

Office of Institutional Research September 2000

HIGHLIGHTS

General Profile • All institutions experienced a decline over the past 5 years in the total number of their transfer students admitted into SFU, as a direct result of the declined transfer student quota set by SFU. The SFU admission quotas for B.C. college transfer was 37% in 1994/95 and by 1998/99 it was set at 31%.

• Langara was the No.3 feeder institution to SFU in terms of the total number of its transfer students admitted into SFU over the 5 years. Kwantlen is the No.1 feeder institution, followed by Douglas.

Academic Performance of Langara Transfer Students • Langara students had the lowest admission GPA upon arrival at Simon Fraser University (SFU). However, by the time they graduated, their average Cumulative GPA (CGPA) was higher than the students from Douglas College and was slightly below similar sized colleges in the Lower Mainland (Capilano and Kwantlen).

• The Graduation CGPA’s of Transfer Students from Capilano, Douglas, and Kwantlen were lower than their Admission GPA’s. Langara was the only college in this comparison where the Graduation CGPA was the same as the Admission GPA at SFU.

• Among the transfers from the 10 institutions that had a degree completion rate exceeding 52%, Langara College’s transfers had a degree completion rate of 56.4% (N=658), with a rank of 4th after College (61.8%), Malaspina (58.6%), and Columbia College (57.3%). In fact, among all public colleges, Langara is No. 2, right after Malaspina in terms of transfers’ degree completion rate.

First Semester Credit Hours • In their first semester at SFU, the majority of Langara Transfer Students (77.8%) enroled in nine or more credit hours, while only 10.3% took three credit hours or less.

• In comparison to Douglas and Kwantlen, Langara had more Transfer Students taking nine or more credits and fewer students taking less than four credits in their first semester. However, among these four comparable colleges, Capilano had the highest percentage of Transfer Students taking nine or more credits (79.2%), and slightly fewer students taking less than four credits in their first semester.

Prepared by the Office of Institutional Research – Langara College 1 Transfer Students by Faculty • The total number of students from Langara transferring into SFU was 1,330 for the reported 5 years. Of these students, the majority transferred into the Faculty of Arts (52.4%), while a large minority transferred into the Faculty of Business Administration (23.8%). Among the four comparing institutions, Langara has the highest proportion of its transfer students entering into the Faculty of Science (9.6%) in SFU.

Distribution of Graduates by Program • The largest group of Langara Students who transferred to SFU graduated from the Business Administration Program (19.4%), followed by 12.9% graduating from Economics, and 9.5% from Psychology.

• Proportion of Langara transfer students completing SFU Business Administration Degrees is higher than those of students transferred from other colleges (19.4% for Langara, 10.4% for Capilano, 17.5% for Douglas, 15% for Kwantlen). Langara transfer students also completed Computing Science, Communications, and Archeology Degrees in larger percentages than students from other colleges in this comparison did. In addition, Langara students completed Education, History, Biological Sciences, and Sociology Degrees in smaller percentages than students from other similar colleges did.

Age and Gender of Transfer Students • Overall, Langara Students admitted to SFU over the 5-year period were slightly older than the Transfer Students from other similar colleges. Slightly over 26% of the Langara Transfer students were 25 years or older (average age of Langara Transfer Students was 23.4).

• Over the 5-year period, Langara had the lowest percentage of females (56.8%) in comparison to the other 3 colleges, and the highest percentage of males (43.2%) as Transfer Students.
