  • MLJ's Silver Age Revivals
ASK MR. SHUTTSILVER AGE “Too Many Super Heroes” doesn’t really do this group justice MLJ’s Silver Age revivals by CRAIG SHUTT Dear Mr. Silver Age, I’m a big fan of The Fly and Fly Girl, and I understand they were members of a super-hero team. Do you know who else was a member? Betty C. Riverdale Mr. Silver Age says: I sure do, Bets, and you’ll be happy to hear that a few of those stalwart super-heroes are returning to the pages of DC’s comic books. The first to arrive are The Shield, The Web, The Hangman, and Inferno. They’re being touted as the heroes from Archie Comics’ short-lived Red Circle line of the 1980s, but they all got their start much earlier than that, including brief appearances in the Silver Age. During those halcyon days, they all were members of (or at least tried out for) The Mighty Crusaders! And, if the new adventures prove popular, there are plenty more heroes awaiting their own revival. The Mighty Crusaders, Archie’s response to the mid-1960s success of super-hero teams, got their start in Fly Man #31 (May 65). The team consisted of The Shield, Black Hood, The Comet, Fly Man (né The Fly), and Fly Girl. The first three were revived versions of Golden Age characters, while the latter two starred in their own Silver Age series. The heroes teamed up for several issues and then began individual back-up adventures through #39. They also starred in seven issues of Mighty Crusaders starting with #1 (Nov 65) and then took over Fly Man in various combinations, when it became Mighty Comics with #40 (Nov 66).

ABSTRACT Comics are an integral aspect of America's development and culture. The comics have chronicled historical milestones, determined fashion and shaped the way society viewed events and issues. They also offered entertainment and escape. The comics were particularly effective in providing heroes for Americans of all ages. One of those heroes -- or more accurately, superheroes -- is the Batman. A crime-fighting, masked avenger, the Batman was one of few comic characters that survived more than a half-century of changes in the country. Unlike his counterpart and rival -- Superman -- the Batman's popularity has been attributed to his embodiment of human qualities. Thus, as a hero, the Batman says something about the culture for which he is an ideal. The character's longevity and the alterations he endured offer a glimpse into the society that invoked the transformations.

BATMAN/SUPERMAN - IYSI project (#2209) Author(s) Created: 11/27/2016 05:46 AM (PT) Jaroslav Točík (Masaryk University) - [email protected] Public: 11/27/2016 05:50 AM (PT) 1) What's the main question being asked or hypothesis being tested in this study? My hypothesis is inspired by Batman VS. Superman movie - my prediction is that Batman is better superhero character than Superman. Because of that – movies and tv series featuring Batman (movies where Batman is the main character – not just one of many like JLA etc.) will tend to have higher IMDB ratings than movies and tv series featuring Superman (same criteria as in Batman’s case). 2) Describe the key dependent variable(s) specifying how they will be measured. IMDB rating (in percents) of 50 lates movies/TV series. 3) How many and which conditions will participants be assigned to? One condition: IMDB rating of movies and TV series where one the superheroes is main character - based on Wikipedia's lists like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Animated_Batman_films. 4) Specify exactly which analyses you will conduct to examine the main question/hypothesis. T-test for independent samples using alpha 0.05. 5) Any secondary analyses? No secondary analyses. 6) How many observations will be collected or what will determine sample size? No need to justify decision, but be precise about exactly how the number will be determined. I will be using independent t-test and I am predicting there will be difference of d = 0.7. Based on power calculations (for power 0.8) and smaller effect size of 0.6, my sample will be 44 Batman movies/TV series and 44 Superman movies/TV series including both animated and live-action movies/TV series and including straight to video movies.

CATHERINE UNIVERSITY April 1, 2014 2 With many thanks to Patricia Montalbano (project advisor), Rachel Neiwart Emily West and Sharon Doherty for their continuous and invaluable interest, assistance, and patience with the project. 3 Introduction When presented with the simple silhouette of a stylized bat inside a yellow oval, people the world over are able to recognize this emblem and, at the very least, name its wearer. Even as the logo is altered with time, the yellow backdrop traded for a grey one, the awareness persists. Yet even as people recognize Batman’s logo, one person’s impression of the superhero does not always align with another’s: a cheerful, law-abiding Batman who orders orange juice instead of alcohol at bars is Batman as he appeared in the 1960s, and a brooding hero wreathed in darkness and prone to conflicted inner monologues is the Batman of the 1980s.

  • Blurring Boundaries, Crossing Divides: an Interview with Will Brooker
. Volume 10, Issue 1 May 2013 Blurring boundaries, crossing divides: An interview with Will Brooker Bethan Jones and Lucy Bennett Abstract: In February 2013, media scholar Professor Will Brooker launched My So Called Secret Identity; a collaborative web-comic (with work from Sarah Zaidan and Suze Shore, amongst others) that offers a different depiction of women in comics than was largely evident in previous works. As writer of the comic, Brooker blurs and crosses the divides between fan, producer and academic. In this interview, we explore these issues, while also touching upon Brooker’s work in fan studies and the current state of the field, the somewhat limited representations of gender in comics, and how MSCSI is engaging successfully and innovatively with an online readership. Keywords: Comics, fandom, gender, social media, feminism. Introduction Media scholar Will Brooker has written widely on modern pop culture and fandom, although he is perhaps best known for his academic work on Batman, including 2003’s Batman Unmasked and the more recent Hunting The Dark Knight (2012). Recently, however he has also taken on Batgirl who, he writes, has always seemed a wasted character: ‘I wanted to like Barbara [Gordon]. I just wasn’t getting much to work with’ (http://mindlessones.com/2011/11/09/from-killer-moth-to-killing-joke-batgirl-a-life-in- pictures). In the same blog post on the Mindless Ones website Brooker undertook a visual analysis of the character’s history, detailing the tropes inherent in comics about superheroines and the apologetic, self-consciously klutzy tone in which Barbara Gordon’s voice is written: ‘There’s the constant reminder, from her own narration, that maybe Barbara simply isn’t good enough even to tackle low-level thugs.

Jerald Ainsworth Dean of the College of Arts and Dean of the Graduate School Sciences i HOW TO BE A HERO: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF SUPERMAN’S FIRST APPEARANCE IN ACTION COMICS By Sevan Michael Paris A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Rhetoric and Writing University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Chattanooga, Tennessee ii ABSTRACT Through a combination of rhetorical heightening, idiom, and structure, Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster influenced their young American audience with the first appearance of Superman in 1938’s Action Comics no. 1. Superman’s lack of distinguishing characteristics, dual identity, and embodiment of American culture allowed the character to become a vehicle for Siegel and Shuster, persuading children to be a helper of those in need and champion of the oppressed. Varying panel size and choosing what to show from what not to show allowed Siegel and Shuster to heighten specific moments within Superman’s story. Through metaphor and symbolic modeling, children recognized the impact of helping others in their lives both as a child and later as an adult. The tools that Siegel and Shuster had available to them in this particular medium—such as being able to simultaneously heighten several different moments within the narrative in one panel—make it a unique form of rhetorical heightening in fiction.
