SHUTTSILVER AGE “Too Many Super Heroes” doesn’t really do this group justice MLJ’s Silver Age revivals by CRAIG SHUTT Dear Mr. Silver Age, I’m a big fan of The Fly and Fly Girl, and I understand they were members of a super-hero team. Do you know who else was a member? Betty C. Riverdale Mr. Silver Age says: I sure do, Bets, and you’ll be happy to hear that a few of those stalwart super-heroes are returning to the pages of DC’s comic books. The first to arrive are The Shield, The Web, The Hangman, and Inferno. They’re being touted as the heroes from Archie Comics’ short-lived Red Circle line of the 1980s, but they all got their start much earlier than that, including brief appearances in the Silver Age. During those halcyon days, they all were members of (or at least tried out for) The Mighty Crusaders! And, if the new adventures prove popular, there are plenty more heroes awaiting their own revival. The Mighty Crusaders, Archie’s response to the mid-1960s success of super-hero teams, got their start in Fly Man #31 (May 65). The team consisted of The Shield, Black Hood, The Comet, Fly Man (né The Fly), and Fly Girl. The first three were revived versions of Golden Age characters, while the latter two starred in their own Silver Age series. The heroes teamed up for several issues and then began individual back-up adventures through #39. They also starred in seven issues of Mighty Crusaders starting with #1 (Nov 65) and then took over Fly Man in various combinations, when it became Mighty Comics with #40 (Nov 66).

Conventional narrative formulas prescribe that meaning will be revealed in a definitive end, but all of the texts discussed reveal other avenues through which it is discerned. In Heart of Darkness, the tension between two divergent narratives enables Conrad to speak beyond his social context and imperialist limitations to demonstrate that identity is socially constructed. In Watchmen, Moore breaks from comic convention to illustrate ways meaning may be ascertained despite the lack of plot ends.

This research was conducted using Kenneth Burke’s theory of terministic screens to evaluate how the authors and artists created the comic books. Sonja Foss’s description of cluster criticism is used to determine key terms in the series and how they were contributed to the creation of characters. I also used visual rhetoric to understand how comic book structure and conventions impacted the visual creation of superheroines. The results indicate that while these superheroines are multi- dimensional characters, they are still created within a male standard of what constitutes a hero.     Kameshia Shepherd The Superhero Genre: Exhibitions Which Explore the Identities, Costumes, and Missions of the Superheroes When the superheroes emerged in the late 1930s and early 1940s they had dual identities, sidekicks, powers and abilities, arch-villains, a costume, a moral code, and a top-secret headquarters but a lawsuit in 1940 established identity, power, and mission as the fundamental attributes of the superhero genre. According to Peter Coogan in Superhero: The Secret Origin of a Genre, Judge Learned Hand estab- lished these three elements in a copyright and infringement lawsuit between two comic book companies. In the case of Detective Comics, Inc. v. Bruns Publica- tions, Inc., DC Comics filed a suit which claimed that Bruns Publication’s super- hero Wonder Man was a duplicate of their character Superman. Judge Learned Hand agreed and stated in his ruling that Wonder Man copied Superman’s dual identities, various powers, and pro-social mission. Based on this copyright law- suit, Coogan argued that Judge Hand had unknowingly provided the definitional characteristics of a superhero.1 Coogan took Judge Hand’s interpretation a step further by combing all of the elements of Hand’s verdict to comprise his own definition. Coogan’s superhero is: A heroic character with a selfless, pro-social mission; with superpowers-extraordinary abilities, advanced technology, or highly developed physical, mental, or mystical skills; who has a superhero identity embodied in a codename and iconic costume, which typi- cally expresses his [or her] biography,

When he came of age Ross enlisted in the military, graduating first in his class at West Point. He married Karen Lee, the daughter of his commanding officer at the time. Ross rapidly rose in rank to captain and then major while serving in his first war. Ross made a great reputation as a leader in combat, but after the war, he was stationed at the nu- clear research facility at Los Alamos, New Mexico. There he met nuclear physicist Brian Banner, the father of Robert Bruce Banner. Ross had risen to the rank of colonel by the time he was sent to his next war, during which he became a general in the U.S. Air Force (Ross never rose beyond three-star gen- eral). As he gloried in combat, he was dissatisfied with the "desk jobs" he was given be- fore and after the war.
