HYMN OF THE WEEK: Lead us, Heavenly Father, Lead us …was written by James Edmeston, who was born in 1791 in Wapping, in the Docklands area of east London. He was brought up a “Nonconformist” but later joined the Church of England. He trained as an architect and surveyor, and in 1864 built Columbia Wharf, Rotherhithe, the first grain silo in a British port. He was a longstanding churchwarden of his local parish of Saint Barnabas, Homerton, east London. He wrote 2,000 hymns, one for every Sunday, but the only one to have attained lasting popularity is Lead us, Heavenly Father, Lead us. The hymn is titled “A Hymn to the Trinity” in one collection, and indeed we see the three verses referencing “Father”, “Saviour” and “Spirit”. In verse one God the Father is exhorted to lead us “o’er the world’s tempestuous sea”, perhaps reflecting the way God “guarded and guided” the Israelites to the Promised Land, across the Red Sea, “keeping them and feeding them” along their way. Edmeston’s familiarity with the docklands made him keenly aware of how rough seas could disrupt human plans, and applied that insight to our spiritual journey, being dependent upon God’s blessing and help. In verse two, “Saviour, breathe forgiveness o’er us”, recalls the appearance of the risen Jesus to his disciples in the upper room. The Risen Lord is not some superman but is someone who has been through our human experiences, who has been through life’s wilderness himself, feeling “lone[ly], dreary, faint and weary”, as we all do from time to time. The third verse concludes the hymn with a poetic prayer to the Holy Spirit. The Spirit brings many gifts, but foremost amongst them are heavenly joy, love and peace that cannot be destroyed. It is about the formative process of the union workhouse apparatus in the early nineteenth-century England, which is defined as a tripartite combination of institutional, architectural, and everyday mechanisms consisting of: legislators, official Poor Law discourse, and administrative networks; architects, workhouse buildings, and their reception in professional journals and popular media; and paupers, their everyday interactions, and ways of self-expression such as workhouse ward graffiti. A cross-scalar research is utilized throughout the essay to explore how the union workhouse apparatus came to be, how it disseminated in such a dramatic speed throughout the entire nation, how it shaped the treatment of pauperism as an experiment for the modern body-politic through the peculiar machinery of architecture, and how it functioned in local instances following the case study of Andover union workhouse. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Gökhan Kodalak is a PhD candidate in the program of History of Architecture and Urbanism at Cornell University. He received his bachelor’s degree in architectural design in 2007, and his master’s degree in architectural theory and history in 2011, both from Yıldız Technical University, Istanbul. He is a co-founding partner of ABOUTBLANK, an inter-disciplinary architecture office located in Istanbul, and has designed a number of award-winning architectural and urban design projects in national and international platforms.

In this newsletter I am attempting to share with you some of the content of Bishop Steven’s presidential address and the ‘Shed Talk’ that we were encouraged to listen to from the Bishop’s Chaplain, Fr Paul Cowan. I begin with some of Bishop Steven’s thoughts. Steven began by encouraging us to think about the words from scripture that will be the Diocesan ‘Dwelling in the Word’ this year. The text is from Philippians 1: 27- 2:13. As I listened to the text I was struck by the reading that I had done in preparing the recorded service on St Aidan, The Bishop of Lindisfarne, last week. Aidan was from the monastic community at Iona and travelled to Northumbria where he used Holy Island as a place of prayer that led to missional action. The Island, as anyone that knows it will be aware, is at some points an Island for prayer and retreat from the mainland and then when the tide goes out becomes a place to reach out to the mainland for missional activity. Verse three of the text says ‘Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.

    ALL SAINTS CHURCH BOYNE HILL MAIDENHEAD PARISH NEWS www.allsaintsboynehill.org.uk Issue 65 7 July 2021 Dear Parishioners and Friends of All Saints, Boyne Hill, I begin this week by offering a big thank you to the sixteen women who made up the GoodGym team who visited All Saints last Wednesday evening. Ken Smith and I welcomed the ladies along with our Polish friend Adam (who is doing wonderful work around the church grounds) as they jogged, ran, walked and cycled their way to the church. On arrival at 7.00pm they went straight into action and in one hour they made the Quadrangle look the best it has appeared for quite some time. All the weeds and grass around the edges of the grass were pulled away and neatly bagged up ready for the tip. Other members of what, I believe, represented a record turn-out for a local group turned their hands to painting the skirting boards within the Parish Centre where we are currently worshipping. It was a wonderful evening with the members in their bright red GoodGym tops offering community work with smiles on their faces. It was humbling to receive this outstanding community work and they are going to return on 21st July to finish the painting in the Parish Centre. It was National Thank You Day on Sunday so from all at the church we thank the GoodGym members for their example of keeping fit and by offering support to the local community. The theme of Walk “B” is “Shipyards, Granaries and Wharves”; it begins at Surrey Quays underground station, and follows the south side of Greenland Dock to the River Thames. The route then follows the river upstream, visiting the sites of several shipyards, where vessels of international historic significance were constructed, passing some of the imposing granaries, and the wharves, which eventually were to replace shipbuilding as the main industrial activity on this stretch of the river. It ends at the Surrey Entrance Lock, with the option of a short walk to Rotherhithe Station, or of taking a bus for a quicker return. Surrey Quays station to Surrey Entrance Lock can be walked in 1 2 /2 to 3 hours. Once having left Greenland Dock, this walk offers some flexibility for those who prefer a shorter outing (or discover that the weather is not going to be quite as good as was hoped!). PREFACE The task of mission has been of paramount importance to the church ever since she received her commission from her resurrected Lord (Matt. 28: 19). But the experience of the church in England during the twentieth century, which has caused many to question her ability to survive, has brought a fresh urgency to the task of mission at home. Even among those who are confident of its future there is a recognition that her survival depends on her adopting a missionary role and overcoming the false assumption that she is self-sufficient merely as a pastoral community. The Nonconformists have historically been more consistently missionary in orientation than the Established Church and a study of the rise and development of their home missionary work in the nineteenth century is richly rewarding for an understanding of our own day. This is especially true in the light of the fact that the twentieth century church has inherited many of the structures and attitudes of the last century whilst not being so willing to adopt the same adventurous creativity.
