Message from the Wairarapa Bush President

As President of the Wairarapa Bush I would like to welcome all players, officials and of course supporters.

Today is a special one, in as much as it heralds the revival of our annual fixture. The relationship between our unions goes back many years. Times have changed, and so must we. Wairarapa is in the Heartland and Hawkes Bay is up a tier. So I applaud the Bay for making themselves available. The experience gained by our players will I'm sure assist in the development of our team.

Today I urge all, to not only be vocal in your support for our Wairarapa Bush side, but be respectful to our visitors.

It is also timely to urge all to support our sponsors, who year in and year out give generously to our union. A quiet beer and a feed at the Farriers is a good way to relax after a busy day.

Today make rugby the winner! You have the best ground in the heartland, a great supporters club where all are welcome and a dedicated team of officials and support staff. On top of all this, today, we have the chance to host a top team from the mighty Bay. The stage is set. Enjoy!

Richard Dahlberg President WBRU

Message from the Wairarapa Bush Chairman

Tena koutou katoa.

A warm Wairarapa welcome to players, officials and supporters of the Magpies.

The Queen’s Birthday clash between our two Unions was one of the longest standing traditions in the New Zealand provincial rugby calendar. Story tellers of both provinces fondly recollect the many mighty battles.

The two Unions have taken different paths since the advent of professionalism but some things still bind us together strongly. We are essentially both rural provinces in the heart of the country. Our two economies and our two communities have much in common. We both produce young men and women players from JAB, to college, and to higher levels that epitomise the very best of provincial rugby. Hawkes Bay- we are quite literally ‘the same iwi’ and you are very much the cousins up the road from us.

Our Farriers Wairarapa Bush boys mounted a strong campaign against the Magpies last year for the . And while we didn’t walk away with the ‘Log of Wood’- members of both Boards and the management teams made a commitment to reviving this important traditional fixture.

As for the rugby- the Bay team are a professional unit but they are without their All Blacks and personnel. For Farriers Wairarapa Bush (and indeed for our whole Union!) the strong and consistent message I hear from every part of our rugby community is that while we are amateur in status- we aspire to be the very best. So today we bench mark ourselves against one of the best rugby unions in the country. What better way to prepare for the exciting season of Heartland Rugby that is now only just around the corner?

Congratulations to each and every team in the local Premier and Reserve Grade Club competitions. I am very privileged to see a lot of rugby during the year. Our level of club competition is fantastic, and I strongly believe our top club teams would hold their own in any club competition nationwide.

Kia ora

Paora Ammunson Chairman Wairarapa Bush Rugby
